lacrits68
hello! I wonder if you could help me with som input in my problem? My disco 1 3,9 1998my have an "popping" sound when idle....its like having some nuts in carbore box....a soft, non metallic sound...sound seems to come from back of the engine, on drivers side. "popping" sound come when engine gets warm! Cold engine runs just fine! when driving and giving engine lots of right foot it becomes kind of "chirping" noise! This nois appears only when loading engine. idle is "hunting" 800/+-100rpm a bit! No coolant loss or any other problems either! What might be wrong? cheers Jan ____
teabag
Maybe a blown manifold to Y pipe gasket if the sound is loudest under load, they are difficult to check as they can blow at the rear ie. facing the block.

ian_s
sounds like the exhaust gaskets to me too. take the manifold off and replace all of the gaskets, its not a difficult or expensive job to do
Bowie69
Use quality composite gaskets, none of the tin rubbish!
