Blackdouglas
After a 240 mile round trip the warning light panel seems to have gone mad. First the rear window heater went off. Then the diff lock light comes on when the ignition is switched off. and goes out when the ignition is on. (the range gear knob was never touched) Now overnight all the reds have come on (without the ignition switch), and the 96 110 will not start (I can hear the relay/solenoid clicking). All I can find is that one of the Yellow relays (the centre of 3) is hot. I have disconnected the battery, put it on charge overnight, and come here for inspiration. Note the nearest LR agent is 60 miles away! Doug
western
centre yellow relay is for the headlights, do the headlights work correctly, if no, the relay maybe in the on position & welded itself on. try swapping it with the left yellow relay [heated rear window]
Blackdouglas
Thanks Ralph No The headlights work fine, I have a suspicion that the battery is OK as well but I will try everything again in the morning when it has been on charge all night. I have a full fat Multimeter, if only I could get the LR started, I could get it under cover, dry it out, and see what then! Doug
Blackdouglas
I have recharged the battery overnight and on reconnection no lights show. On starting the glow plug light came on as normal, but also the difflock light. THe engine started and all lights went out. Head and sidelights working, Rear demist and foglight inoperative . On attempting to restart starter relay clicks, but this time no starting. Immobiliser seems to operate as normal wrt flashing lights and dashboard neon. Help! Blackdouglas
2 days on a full battery, no further obvious electrical faults, and the starter will not respond. All the normal ignition lights come on, and on start the yellow starter relay clicks, but there is no clunk from the solenoid, or evidence of current drawdown. I have replaced the starter relay, and fully checked the immobiliser which appears to go on and off in the normal manner. Before I get soaked (it's been hosing down here for the last 3 days) any ideas or diagnostic options? Doug
FridgeFreezer
When lots of things go weird, it's an earthing problem. Check all the earth straps, connection points, etc.
bleyseng
Check the black earth wire that attaches to the gearbox with a ring terminal.
Blackdouglas
Thanks a lot guys. I now have the wiring diagram and the Defender Electrical Library, and a dry day tomorrow, so I will let you know how I get on. Doug
bleyseng
Actually, forget my suggestion, i failed to notice the part in your heading which says ignition key off! Its not likely to be that earth fault.
FridgeFreezer
Could be a duff alternator regulator pack back-feeding voltage through the warning light.
Blackdouglas
I think its time to recap. Initially the difflock light was on only when the key was out. Everything else worked normally, and it went out when the LR was running. Since then,it would not restart. I disconnected and charged the battery, and after that all manner of strange things happened. at one point the oil pressure and charge lights were on without the key, then that stopped happening. Now I have the difflock light on when the ignition is switched on plus the normal reds and the glow plug (timed). Every other electrical system seems to be functioning normally. When you try to start, nothing happens except that you can hear the starter relay click, but the solenoid does not operate. Reading the electrical library notes this indicates that the immobiliser ecu is working . This is confirmed by it doing all the appropriate tricks with lights and sounds when you press the correct button. I have read that the main feed to the solenoid is from the Main fuses (checked) via the yellow starter solenoid through the spider and on to the starter. Might this be the source, and can I check it out of the pouring rain. Doug
