Td5 alternator wiring

Hi all,

I have chosen a td5 alternator for my twin setup as it has a vacuum pump built inand is rated to 120 amps, I have it mounted to my engine but I'm trying to find out what wire goes where into the 3 pin connector on the rear.

Any help will be greatly received

It's fitted onto my 5.9 Cummins 110 mainly for the built in vacuum pump but also a bit of extra charging capacity.

I have two starting batteries and plan to fit a leisure battery or an optima yellow top for winching and for powering lights etc. When camping.

I have read that a battery monitoring system can control these types of alternator but will have to look into it a bit further.

I was thinking of using a 150A p38 alternator as well for the main one which I would presume will also be battery sensed?

I do quite bit of off roading and a few pay and play days and eventually want to fit two 8274 winches to be able rescue myself if I get into problems as the Cummins weighs just over 500Kg roughly 300kg more than the v8 it replaced so am going to need some pulling power.

I just don't want to get the control wires wrong and frazzle it and render it useless.

Only 2 of the 3-ways in the connector are used.

Pin 1 - Charge warning light - Brown/Yellow

Pin 2 - Ignition-switched live - White/Green (Discovery II) / Green/Yellow (Defender)

Pin 3 - Not used

The pin numbering in the connector is -

The above diagram is of the connector 'face' or front, the cables are inserted from the other side.

I can supply a new connector with terminals and wire seals. If you need one, drop me a PM.

Thanks for the diagram Paul, I will need one and will pm you shortly.

I will do a bit of research on the p38 type, am I right In thinking that I would have to make sure it was battery sensed like the td5 one so they wont conflict with each other or can they be mixed?
