C18RCH
I'm currently overhauling my transfer box. I bought an overhaul kit complete with paper gaskets but I looked on ashcrofts website last night and they use sealant type gasket. Since I have some in the shelf anyway I'm now wondering which is the best to use and why? Cheers, Rich
Rangy35
I have used both where they were applicable, no problems its a personal choice I think, go with what you like/prefer.
Retroanaconda
For some locations in the transfer box particularly it does matter, because it affects bearing pre-load. For example the rear bearing cover plate for the input gear. The mating surface between that and the t-box casing had a paper gasket on early models and used RTV type sealant on later ones. But you must use what is fitted to the box you have as the pre-load for the bearing (which is set by the choice of a spacer shim on manufacture to allow for machining tolerances in the t-box casing) depends on this thickness being maintained. I discovered this when I was messing about with input gears and bolted the cover plate on "dry" to test fit and it locked the bearings solid. Re-fitted with correct paper gasket in and all was well. Follow the workshop manual and all will be well.
