Cleaning yer rusty bits

Ok, not to hijack this thread but... :P

Do people have a recommended way to store bits like halfshafts / gears etc without them going rusty (like wrapping in oil-soaked cloth or something, rather than a full oil bath - so I can stack it on shelves out of the way).

For some reason if I grind steel it will stay shiny for months in my garage, but an extracted halfshaft will start rusting in a few weeks...???

Cheers, Al.

you could get hold of some waxy brown paper, that's often used for parts.

or lube the stuff up and bung it in a placcy bag of appropriate size

The gases given off in electrolysis are vaguely dangerous... read hydrogen and oxygen...

The good news is that its in small volumes, so unless you put a tight lid on the box, its not going to make a difference...

Soda crystals is washing soda, not caustic soda...

The only real problem is if you try using stainless steel for the anode - chromates are highly toxic !

Cheers

Pete
