Scandi
This is my first post on this forum. I am residing in Nairobi and have a 1993 model 110 Defender with a 200Tdi that has served me well 300,000 km so far. High oil consumption prompted me to overhaul the engine a few months ago. I re-bored the block and replaced pistons with new KS ones. The crankshaft was in very good condition so new std. size main and con-rod bearings were fitted during reassembly. I had the crankshaft, complete with flywheel and front damper and pulleys checked on a balancing machine. All checked out fine and not needing any rebalancing. The injection pump was overhauled and recalibrated at a reputable diesel workshop. New injectors were also put in. On startup I noted quite big vibrations. A lot more than before the rebuild. I replaced the engine mounts to a softer type as the rubber in the ones I had used was hard as ice hockey pucks. The vibrations reduced, but are still noticeably more than before rebuild. I have talked to an engine balancer in Sweden and he suggest I check-weigh the conrod/piston assembly as this may cause unbalance if not equal. Does anyone have some other suggestions of things to check before I tear it apart again? Lars
Snagger
Check your timing is correct. It's not just a matter of lining up the timing tools in the pump and flywheel, either, though that is a good place to start - if the pump has been rebuilt, the front sprocket may have been put on at a slightly incorrect angle making static timing setting impossible. I had that on a new 300Tdi pump.
Mo Murphy
Lars, how does it drive ? Does feel more Powerful than before the rebuild ? Mo
Scandi
Hi Snagger, I will check the static timing of the pump as you suggest and revert once done, since I know it was completely stripped to bits during the calibration process. Because of wear the high pressure end with distributor and plunger was replaced (at great expense).
Scandi
Hi Mo, Thanks for your input. The car drives well besides the vibrations, and I think it may even have more power than before. It smokes a bit more on full power but I haven't tried to tune the pump just yet. I suspect it may be out since the pump has standard calibration and I reside and use the car at 5500 feet above sea level.
Mo Murphy
Lars, the reason I ask is that after I rebuilt mine it vibrated like it was going to self destruct on tick over but performance was really really good for a tdi. Adjusting the pump timing back anti clockwise a little reduced the vibration considerably but at the cost of some performance (it still goes very well though ) It might be worth a try for you. Scandi
Ok Mo, I will check the timing once again and even do it with the dial indicator to verify the position of the plunger inside the pump. Regards Lars
