Disco-Ron
1985 '90, running arc v8, with lt77, and 230 transfer box, so, the front prop is totally knackered, the problem is, what do I buy, the truck started out as a na 2.5d, so I suspect that's what I should need, however some suppliers list one front prop for almost all defender s, trouble is, I have a 300 front prop, and that is a different length, I'm a bit confused really as to what I need, any advice would be appreciated. neonovice
Try the propshaft clinic. Made to order - any length you want. Just measure the gap.
Disco-Ron
Thought about that, but I'm sure the truck should suite a. Standard prop of some sort, there doesn't appear to be a fully comprehensive list anywhere of lengths, closed and ideally open.... I have a gap of approximately 680mm, which seems a bit long for most listed front ones.....
Boydie
If your prop shaft meassurement (flange to flange) is 680mm then you should be looking for a shaft of compressed length of around 650mm - this will give you enough free float on compression and expansion to prevent fouling. Disco-Ron
Thanks, I think I've just about convinced myself that I need a prop for an early diesel, pre 300..... they are apparently 654mm..... Ta
western
if main & transfer gearboxes are still in the original location & on the same mounts, the standard [original spec] shaft will still fit.
Disco-Ron
Thanks western, that's what I assumed, however some suppliers list the same item for all diesels, and as I have this and a 300 one, I know they're not.... hence my confusion..... western
IIRC 300 is different because the clutch bell housing is longer which moves the engine up & forward & transfer box a bit further rearwards,
Disco-Ron
Odd that, the 300 prop is shorter!
western
page 476 in retro's 90 parts book here http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/parts_books/90/6_axles_suspension_engine_controls_p475-580.pdf say the V8 front prop is the same part as a tdi front prop FRC8386 but as it was a TD originally that prop is FRC8390
