jameslwt
Hi I've recently acquired a '79 Lightweight FFR and the coolant temperature gauge goes straight up to the maximum when the ignition is on. The previous owner fitted a new sensor/sender, as have I, with no change. I've read up a bit on this, and earthing the wire to the sender flicks the gauge straight into the red. As I understand it this means both the gauge and the wiring are fine, and its likely to be the sender. However this is sender No 3 (luckily not expensive) so I don't believe they are all faulty. Has anyone got any other ideas? I bet its something really simple (he hopes lol). Thanks James
Pollywog
12v sensor wired with 24v?
Bowie69
Quite possibly, look for an extra resistor fixed between terminals, also, you can inadvertently bypass it by connecting the wire to the wrong point! True 24V gauges are pretty rare to get hold of...
jameslwt
According to the suppliers, its the same sensor for both 12v and 24v
jameslwt
Thanks for the replies - I'll have a look at the back of the gauge later
Bowie69
The suppers fib then.... Definitely a different part number.
jameslwt
Hi Bowie Do you have the different part numbers or know where I can get them from? All I can find is that the part is one and the same, whether 12v or 24v. Many thanks James
Bowie69
This one clearly has 24V marked on the dial: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Water-Temperature-Gauge-24v-PRC1791-Original-Land-Rover-Packing-/230929775394?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35c47cbb22 I don't have the part nos, and ebay, where I got a NOS one from, seems to have lost that part of purchase history. You can see the 270 Ohm resistor on the back of this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-GENUINE-LAND-ROVER-24V-WATER-TEMPERATURE-GAUGE-MILITARY-SERIES-III-PRC1791-/151625998597?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item234d9d2105 And on the back of this oil temp gauge: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-GENUINE-LAND-ROVER-24V-OIL-TEMPERATURE-GAUGE-SERIES-III-LIGHTWEIGHT-PRC1793-/151632755879?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item234e043ca7
jameslwt
Many thanks and yes, the gauges are different. I thought you meant the sender which seems to be the same whether 12v or 24v although that's a question also looking at google. Thanks for the help James
