Milner575
Just wondering if anyone can help with this. I have a very strange and intermittent rattling sound coming from underneath somewhere that is driving me insane. At first I thought brake pads because it wasn't too bad. However today it was very loud and seemed to worsen as I accelerated and did it all the way home. Had a friend look underneath and say the ujs look or feel ok but there is a lot of oil on and around the transfer box with a lot of play in it too. Anyone have any ideas if this could cause the said noise? It does seem to disappear when I put the clutch in when driving and allow it to roll so to me that rules out brake pads or wheel bearings etc. Just can't figure out why it doesn't do it constantly For example on the way home from my mates house it did it about half way back and then just stopped again as if there is nothing wrong. Little bit desperate at the minute too as its my only mode of transport for a while
Tanuki
What vehicle??? A friend's Puma 110 had a rattle which turned out to be the bracket on a metal heat-shield on the exhaust middle box had rusted through and the shield had dropped... Milner575
Although I'm confused as to why it goes when I dip the clutch. Aren't all of the shafts still spinning if the wheels are still turning? I don't know it's pickling my brain
marktdi
It could be the exhaust my 200tdi did this a couple of weeks ago , i eventualy tracked it dawn to a cracked weld on back box . 10 mins with welder cured problem
Fatboy
I had this, turned out to be corrosion on the inner surface of the handbrake drum causing a high spot that seemed to flick the shoes and cause them to rattle the springs and each other.. Mine also went away when I dipped the clutch. Once I'd given the drum a good clean back to smooth steel, the noise stopped.
Milner575
I noticed that if I pull the handbrake slightly it stops however I've had chance to jack it up properly and the rear uj is ****ed. Nightmare cuz I have nowhere to get it from today
vulcan bomber
I get the impression you have bust a spring in the clutch friction plate or the clutch release bearings on its last legs if it goes away when you depress the clutch pedal.
