slihp
Is there an easy way to tell if your starter is going. when i crank mine from cold its started to dose nothing (the starter dosent even energize) on the first turn then starts on the second. Team Idris
I run a bulb all the while to the top of the starter. Then you know it is getting good voltage (dim bulb/bright bulb) and if the ignition switch is working to send power.

slihp
new starter? or can be fixed?
Escape
No need for a new starter, reconditioned ones aren't expensive, around €100 over here. Or you could try and recondition it yourself, could be as simple as giving it a good clean to get all the muck of.

slihp
my god, had a look tonight at what im face with on sat to get the starter motor out. by all accounts it can be done from ontop but it looks impossible. removing the air intake will give better access. It's not that hard from underneath. One bolt is a bit awkward to get to, but all very straightforward. And a Defender is high enough not to need a ramp for access, just find something soft to lie on. slihp
mines has a 2" lift so may be easier too. Ill keep both opions open then. Cheers
slihp
Well get it off, the hard bolt wasn't that bad bit of a pain that's all. the other two easier ones were the problem, torqued right on real difficulty cracking them in limited space. Agreed from underneath is the best. I cant see how you can get to that bolt from above
