Now I would usually stick GL4 in everything but I have 10 litres of EP90 GL5 in the garage and it's a shame to not use it so can I use it in the axles and hubs? This may be total rubbish but I thought the harmful additives were only in very early flavours of GL5 and most modern stuff is safe in everything? It's far bigger and more substantial that the one on my previous SWB S3 and has reinforcing welded to the axle tube? OK Jon. I'll go with GL5 in both axles for now and if I have any left then same in hubs. I'll see if the local Camberley's stocks GL4 or do Mr Bunns old place in Southampton? What is annoying is GL5 is up to 50% cheaper than GL4 so if it is fine these days......... Any idea if Brookies would stock GL4? Rich_P Posted February 2, 2009 Share Posted February 2, 2009 Gearbox may not take well to the GL5, that's what suffers as GL5 has some properties that eat away at (I think) the bronze components. You'll get a better idea if when you drain the oil after using GL5 that it might have damaged the internals from a glitter like look to the oil. But you couldn't knock the new guys for enthusiasm, it's just other areas that were lacking? So now where to get some at a reasonable price - Camberley AF Scatts Brooklyn Tried so far. Paul Hi Paul, Go to the Comma oils web site: http://www.commaoil.com/ and you will see they do various gear oils including an EP80/90 GL4 which is just the job for your gearbox. If you click on'Where to buy', they have a post code search to find your nearest stockist. rick Posted February 5, 2009 Share Posted February 5, 2009 FWIW I'd never use a GL4 gear oil in any diff, even a Rover spiral bevel type and never, ever use a GL4 oil in a hypoid diff like a Sals if you want your CWP to survive. The API GL4 spec uses roughly 1/3 to 1/2 less of the EP/AW additives of a GL5, and most all, or at least the decent brands, have the sulphur buffered so it isn't corrosive. Generally any GL5 that's blended for transaxle use is suitable for a normal manual gearbox too, (often dual rated GL4/5) with the correct type and amount of friction modifiers for decent synchro use. If unsure grab a TDS and look for the copper corrosion test numbers. GL4's are typically 1a, and most good GL5's are 1b, meaning they are safe for any yellow metals present. If you ever get to have a look at a copper corrosion chart, (can't find mine ATM) there is bugger all difference between 1a (no discolouration at all) and 1b (very, very slight, has to be put beside 1a to see the difference) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
