300 TDi CAT.

Hello all,

Being bored yesterday I took a hacksaw to the CAT that I removed from my 300TDi at the weekend. I was suprised as to how clear the mesh looks as IFAIK it's the original for the vehicle and has done about 130,000 miles. The mesh has a quite tight weave and there seem to be several layers in the can so I can see that it will cause some restriction to exhaust gas flow even if it was completely clean.

not the best quality pictures but the camera was struggling to decide what to focus on.

not all that interesting I guess.

Pete.

Everytime I have cut one up I have found charcoal - it looks like someone has emptied the remains of a barbeque into the cat - I never noticed the mesh before

I have heard stories of upto £100 being paid out by scrap-yards for old cats

Some early vehicles say prior to 1990 that had Cats fitted (US cars mainly) used a bead based fill which is probably what you have seen.

Cheers,

Paul
