  1. Aubrey, there are some pics of my (now sold) Lightweight on www.muddyplugger.co.uk which shows some pics. I kept the original hi milers 6.5x16, but difficult to find as you say. The bonnet Y stap is like rockinghorse s*** to find (my experience), so good look in your searches. Mark Cook wrote a fantastic book titled 'The 1/2 Ton Military Land Rover' which is stuffed full of photos off all sorts of Lightweights in service. Anth.
  2. May be some of you know of this site, but in-case anyone new here hasn't, I found this Estonian Landrover site with free download (PDF) of the defender workshop manual. [Estonian Land Rover Club] It fits in two lever arch files and certianly seems to beat the ebay lot selling it for a tenner! http://www.landrover.ee/est/varia/downloads/cars.htm NB, yes it is in English! And they also seem to have the Series manuals too.....
  3. Cheers, I'm searching for all the mods to make this thing a decent off road machine whist keeping it for commuting to work and back! I am also looking to change the colour to Bonatti grey (tomb raider landy colour), but I suppose I should concentrate on getting it mechanically sound first!!
  4. Yes, there is, but it has come off (rusted) and someone has put a bit of chain on a lower mounting to hold it up, so i will shorten the chain in the short term, but i do fancy having it tucked well out of the way!
  5. I bought my new "old" defender (1989 with 200tdi unit), and apart from all the knackered bits I didnt spot , the exhaust looks incredibly low at the rear box. I have seen defenders where the exhaust exits through the rear quater of the body work, so is this a matter of cranking up the angle grider and hacking it off and shoving it through, or is there a special 'back box'? NB: I will be asking lots of questions in the coming months regards mods, so please be patient! (hopefully my questions will also help others who feel too daft to ask......however, I am that daft! )
  6. Wow you guys! Thanks for the info, I get the trend here, there are some minor subtle differences, which is great news! Looks like I might be the proud owner of a 1989 defender with a 200TDi engine by the weekend!
  7. I'm a bit new to Defenders and I'm looking to buy one. My question, probably daft, but what is the difference between the 1989 (TD) and the 1990- (TDi). I realise the engine difference!! (not that daft) but was there any other upgrades/changes from the Td to the Tdi? I may purchase a 1989 model with a 200TDi unit in you see!
  8. B) Godman you were right! Cheers. Cleaned up the (very cacked up) terminal and hey presto... faultless starting! Its so satisfying not spending money to fix things Thanks for your help!
  9. Ho Ho, Sounds like my sort of fix!!!!
  10. Worringly I have began to experience my TD5 (1999 model) not starting first time, the symptoms sound like the solenoid (you know that click!). Atfer 5 or 6 attempts it springs to life no problems! Some days its OK but recently happening every day. My fear is soon it will not start at all! Is there anything else it could be? Can the solenoid be replaced independantly of the starter motor?? Damn these fangled cars!
  11. All us chaps 'oop narth' are very pleasant!!!
  12. Found you!!!!!......Right now its my turn to hide, count to Ten and no peeking.......
  13. Here's mine!....and its for sale! No mods at all, very original!
