  1. Thanks very much David. I have placed a call to a local independent parts place in Angoulême run by a very efficient Dutch lady and am awaiting a call back as its not a part they carry and have to get a price from their supplier. I may have a go at repairing it if the price is ridiculous - I can't weld but I may be able to do something with a piece of rubber pipe and jubilee clips although I always worry that repairs like this are a bit of a time-bomb! I'll let you know the outcome. Ged
  2. Hi, Thanks very much for the reply. I have searched the suppliers with this part number but to no avail. Are you sure that this is the right number? Thanks
  3. Hi, I put this on the end of an old post but thought it may get read if I re-posted it as new topic. Can anyone ID the leaky metal tube under my Disco? I think this is where I am losing coolant from and would like to get a part number to order a replacement. Thanks
  4. Thanks for the information. From your attached diagram it is clear that mine is not the same problem - well perhaps the same problem but different location. I have attached a photo taken today showing a droplet of coolant on the underside of the metal pipe and I think that is where it is leaking from. Can anyone tell me what this part name/number is please? Ged
  5. Thanks a lot guys. I need to get the bloody lower engine shroud off to see where the pink leaky stuff is coming from. Still not resolved the whiney noise at low revs but may have to bite the bullet and take it to my local dealer. I simply cannot believe that its meant to sound that way, oil spinner or ACE system. Thanks. Ged
  6. Thanks very much for the reply and the link. I will have a further look at this but will have to get the cover off first which looks as though it is a right pain. Out of interest will any kind of anti-freeze work in the Td5 or is it something special? Thanks, Ged
  7. Yep, it me again with another query. When I bought my 2002 Disco about 6 weeks ago one of things I noticed was that the coolant level was about 25mm below the level line on the header tank. I topped it up and thought no more about it. After a recent long run I noticed a spot or two of wet under the engine when parked at home. Crawling underneath I found droplets of anti-freeze coloured water around the inspection hole beneath the engine and splattered back onto the diff and chassis. Because of the bl*ody lower engine shroud thing I cannot determine where this water is coming from and the level in the header tank has now dropped again. It may be a simple case of a split hose or something but I wondered if this a common issue with the DII and if there is a common culprit. Meanwhile, is it hard to get the bottom engine shroud off? Thanks, Ged
  8. Hi Dave, yes that pretty well describes the noise I can hear - over 1000rpm or thereabouts it gets much better and disappears thereafter but the cornering thing is quite noticeable at low speeds. It is none the less a noise that (in my case) is associated entirely with engine revs and is present either stationary or in motion.
  9. Cheers Jim. Out of interest is the centrifugal filter easy to change and is there much oil spillage?
  10. Yes, it does have the ACE system so I will need to investigate this further and thanks for that tip. I'm really a bit puzzled given that some respondents have cited that they cannot hear the oil filter while others say it is very loud and can be heard in the cabin while driving. This disparity does cause me some concern.
  11. Thanks a lot for the link etc. I have since been out and run/switched off the engine and listened for the overrun as the spinner winds down so it appears that this is indeed the noise that I have been hearing but I am still astounded that it should intrude so noticeably into the cabin. I can't believe that the LR design team would have let that slip through on what is not (lets be honest) a low budget vehicle and I am sure that many owners would find it unacceptable. As a long-standing Tdi owner I'm used to running noises akin to the German advance on Stalingrad but many must be quite amazed. Out of interest does changing the filter reduce/alter the noise or is it a case of 'it is what it is'. Thanks again, Ged
  12. Sorry to be an arse, but where is the centrifugal filter located - within the engine bay (or elsewhere)? I only got my Haynes manual yesterday and not had a chance to look through it yet. Are these filters really THAT noisy? Ged
  13. Thanks for the suggestion Chris. I honestly don't know but I can't believe that this filter should be so audibly noticeable. You know how it is with noises; some sound sort of peripheral while others sound as though they are coming from the centre of the vehicle. This sounds like the latter. I wondered about gearbox bearings or something - depressing the clutch makes no difference. Clutch appears to function properly although I have noticed that there is a strange kind of whirring noise occasionally just when the clutch bites - mainly in reverse although I'm not sure if the two facts are connected. BTW the Disco has done 148,000km (88,000 miles). Ged
  14. Hi, Bought a 2002 Disco about 6 weeks ago and been generally very please with it. It is the first Td5 that I have owned so am still getting used to it after many Tdi's Defenders and Discos. Since owing it I have been aware of what I can only describe as a deep whining noise at low revs (starts at around 1000rpm) but which disappears at higher speeds. It rises and falls with engine revs and is not associated with travel speed. I thought at first that was perhaps a worn alternator bearing or something similar but it seems to be located more centrally and around the engine/gearbox junction. It is more audible within the car than from outside and I am starting to wonder if it something more sinister as I'm sure that it is not a 'design feature' of the Td5. I feel sure that the noise is becoming louder although this may just be my paranoia. I can record the noise if it helps but not sure how to upload it to the site for your listening please! Ged
  15. As a resident of France (where MOTs last 2 years and road tax has been abolished) I read these comments with interest and a degree of sadness. I have long since argued that if the government REALLY had its heart in the environmental camp then at midnight following the budget it would: 1/ Remove all duty on LPG 2/ Remove all duty on bio-fuels 3/ Remove VAT on all renable energy sources and provide 50% tax-back incentives on all energy conservation work on property (as is done in France) ie: PVC double glazing, shutters, wind turbines/hydro-generators/solar panels etc 4/ Invest massivley in alternative energy sources The fact that it continues to do none of these things proves that it is not about the environment but raising revenue. After all, at what cost would owning/driving a Land Rover have to be to stop us wanting/owning one?
  16. I bought one out here in France, I think its called a Techinc and made in Belgium. I paid €29 for it about 2 years ago and it squirts out water about 130psi which I though was quite good for a cheapy ands its been very effective on the car and the house. Unfortunately the hose between the unit and the lance has split (which was nice) so now I'm not sure whether I can replace the hose on its own. A mate used to have one which was attached to a petrol engine-driven pump unit and that thing just about took lumps out of concrete - I can't remember the name of it though it may have been an Hitachi.
  17. Well I'm very endebted to you all. Its witch-craft to me but as long as it works I don't care how. I will look into the DNS thing and see about updating firmware on the Belkin. Ged
  18. Amazing. The link works with both Exploerer & Firefox. There is small strange partially transparent ad that pops up on the web page but that can be closed. How did that work?
  19. Thanks for all the advice and help given. I enlisted the help of an (un)willing IT boffin who still has been unable to resolve the issue despite installing firefox, removing all firewalls, anti-virus protection, deleting cookies etc etc. He is completely at a loss as to why I can access some sites and not others such as Orange.fr, Health & Safety Exec etc. Think its is a router issue rather than a PC issue but has admitted defeat for the time being! Computer 1 - 0 IT Boffins
  20. Having read through the plethora of advice kindly given here (very many thanks for that guys) and having tried some, I think that you are right in that this is not an issue I can resolve myself. I may be fluent in English/French but I'm afraid the world of IT is still Greek to me! I found the access for the router (192.168.2.1) but even that page won't load either so that was a bit of a dead end. Seems I'll be parting with some hard-earned € to get it sorted. Thanks again to all. Ged
  21. I feel that as the problem seems to persist with all of the 3 PCs in the house (Vista, Win2000 & XP) I can't help but feel that (logically) the issue must be with the router (Belkin) as this is only common link. What I don't know is how to alter or access the controls of this device.
  22. Sorry to be a bit thick but what do you mean by 'ping'?
  23. Thanks very much. I will try some of these measures and see what happens. I regret that I am not particularly IT-minded so unfortunately your last paragraph passed well over my head. Sorry!
  24. I wonder if I might pick your collective brains about an issue I have been experiencing with net access. Since changing to Vista, I have noticed that I am unable to access certain specific websites which before seemed to work OK - such Ryanair and Orange.fr. Whenever I try to access them the little progress bar at the bottom of the screen just grinds to a halt after about 5 minutes or eventually I lose the will to live! I did a web search on this problem and found some stuff which suggested that certain sites are not 'compatible' with Vista (RFC 1323) something to do with 'backwards compatibility'. There was a fix quoted which I have tried by typing in 'cmd' into the search box and typing in a number of commands after the prompt. This has not fixed the problem so I'm really not sure what to do next. The strange thing is that we have two other computers (Win2000 and XP) running through the same router neither of which want to access these sites either. Is it a problem with the router then? I have up to date AVG virus and spyware protection and all other sites etc seem to work fine. I don't know if this is something any of you have experienced or if you have any other suggestions but I would be grateful for any pointers you might have. Ta, Ged
  25. Thanks Jules. Sadly the scrapes are not my doing but inherited from the previous owner. I will try the white sprit thing and see how that goes annd see if I can get bumper gel out here. I wanted to avoid painting because it never matches properly. Ta
