  1. It might be interesting to know if you can move the flaps by hand if the controls on the RHS of the dash are removed/disconnected, i.e. is the the controls jammed, cable or the vents themselves?

As others have stated, to get proper access, it's a top down removal.

Removing top down might also allow some view from the top, e.g. is something lodged in there?

  2. Hi Folks,

Noticed some corrosion around the second row seat latches and seat belt mounts.

Took the brackets off from underneath the wheel arch and cleaned off the crud/wire brushed back.

The panel is mainly solid but not particularly liking the fact two of the rivets of each of the latches have corroded away underneath.

Thinking how best to fix. Might proceed along the lines of removing the section marked out and get new pieces of aluminium welded in. This could then be primed and sprayed for neat finished.

Would be interested to know how other folk have approached this.

If I go down the path of fitting a new section of aluminium, anybody recommend someone on the SW (Bristol) that would be able to do the welding. I'm happy to cut out and prepare as needed.

For the refit, I have got some new brackets from YRM with the isolating rubber strip when refitting.

    Thanks in advance,

    Simon...

  3. "Universal transport coverage is totally impractical and prohibitively expensive for people that live in a rural setting," - Sure. That makes sense and agree impractical for all. That's the problem with generalisation.

One of my old English teacher's favourite quotes - "He who generalises, generally lies" 🙂

Guess I was mainly thinking about folk living directly in the middle of urban areas. I'm Bristol based also and do wonder how many folk living a few miles from the city center end up driving in and parking up for the day?

  4. Seems to me that most solutions to change peoples behaviour with respect to driving seems to involve more "stick" rather than "carrot".

I'd even be prepared to pay more general tax (council/PAYE/etc...) to fund clean, quality FREE local transport. At that point, there is little excuse to not use them more generally. (Unless admittedly you're picking up a wardrobe from IKEA). Perhaps this is just a different kind of stick?

Would also like to see more kids walking or dedicated buses for school. The irony of the desire to have clean air around schools when you witness that amount of school drop off traffic.

I also wonder whether a longer term move to more working at home will have any impact? Appreciate this does not fit well for all jobs.

  5. Our 110 300 Tdi has just turned 25 years of age. Hopefully will be driving it for another 25years 🙂

With respect to prices, it's not clear to me whether folk actually get the prices being asked for?

  6. Hi There,

As above, I fitted a battery with the largest CCA value. This is physically larger than the battery that was originally fitted. As such, used a different strap to clamp in place.

    Type 019 Varta Silver Dynamic Car Battery 12V 100Ah (Short Code: H3) (Varta DIN: 600 131 080 or 600 402 083)

    https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/varta/h3/

Had it for 5 years and working well for me. Starts first time.

That said, when I know I'll not be using for a few weeks I tend to have it on charge in the garage.

  7. Suggest before getting too busy cleaning, it's worth packing some type of cloth into the inlet ports to ensure you do not get anything into the cylinders.

When cleaning mine I had a hoover nozzle  in one hand and one of those plastic razor blade scrapers in the other. Gently does it, no rushing, etc...

  8. Agree. Looks like steering fluid. When did this leak occur - on start up or when engine not running. Noticed that the wheels are on the angle where more stress is on the pump and pipes.

Difficult to judge but looks like a significant proportion has dumped out.

Take a good look at connections and the state of the steering pipes - reservoir to block, block to pump, pump to reservoir. Two of these run behind the front cross member of the chassis.

If nothing obvious, top up and then run engine, move steering wheel side to side (full lock) and observe. It should be obvious where it is leaking. That said, this would be a messy affair.

    Good luck,

    Simon...
