  1. a friend has offered me a lightweight, decent chassis but not great nick. i havent said yes though-yet.

just thought i would ask what people have done with them and ask

are they easy to convert to coils-ive seen a few, but have never thought about it!

engine uprgades?or just clean up the 2.25 petrol- i did see the article in december LRO where they guy had a lightweight

    cheers

also, i dont think its 24volt

    What headlights has it got?

Headlights in the grill are S2A and getting rare (infact I haven't seen one for ages), headlights in the wings are S3.

My personal favourite is the 2A as it is a cleaner front end, but then I have a S1 so I'm biased.

Lightweights have removable body sections and unique axles and halfshafts.

Bulkhead rot may be a problem as they are unique as well but with so many S3 produced may be not?

The only complaint that I have heard about them is that in winter you get very cold feet as the wings do not cover the foot wells.

My twopennethfor what its worth, get it, leave it std and have fun. :)

  2. Well put C D. there's nothing really to add to that!

    Except - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7937196.stm

    From BBC

Land Rover, which is owned by India's Tata Motors, said the car would be the smallest, lightest and most efficient it has produced.

So it will be smaller and lighter than an 80" then??

The LVC looks cute but what was it good for as it is so small?

    Japanese market?

    Sorry too cynical.

I guess that LR not raiding the Ford parts bin further was probably a Ford decision as they did not want to pass on too much tooling to whom ever they were going to sell LR to as they probably never intended to keep it?

    Marc.

  3. there are also 2 flavors of 1:1 box, one which is stronger than the other, and i have one of both, unfortunately i don't know which is the strong one and which one is the weak one.
Thanks for the info, I would be interested in your 1:1 transfer box if you want to sell one.

So that would be Russian Roulette for both of you then :P

    Marc.

  4. What are all the different types of competition that one might find on the AWDC etc sites?

    For example:-

    - Biggin Quarry, DE6 1QU, Derbeyshire (Promotional Event, SVT, Tyro Trial)

    What are promotional events?

    Tyro Trial?

    Modified Trial?

    SVT?

    RTV?

    AVT?

    Safari?

    Comp Safari (same?)?

    Randonee ?

Challenge (winch i assume, are there others?)

    ETC?

    Thanks in advance.

    Blimey,

things have changed since I was a member!

I can't answer all of them, I went to the AWDC website to look, I then went to the AWDC Trials Forum which pointed me at the Documents page for the Regulations.

Guess what the regs dont explain either!!

As far as I can see the ones I know are:

Randonee - not sure but guess its based on the French Alps tye of driving event?

Promotional Events - every club is allowed a limited number of Driveround days where the general public is allowed even if their vehicle is not the right manufacturer (e.g. ALRC for Land Rover) to tempt new members.

Tyro Trial - 14 year old drivers.

Modified Trial - Specials built for Trialing only and therfore more dificult.

SVT - as far as I could see this is for Standard Vehicles Trial. The layout of each section used to be 10 gates where Modified and RTV could use the same sections. Now it seems that there are 15 gates and SVT are only allowed to use a limited number of the gates for safety.

RTV - Road Taxed Vehicle Trial (bizarely you used to have to bring all your valuable documents to prove it, not just a Tax Disk?).

AVT - couldn't find out about this though it looked like it includes vehicles with locker etc??

Safari, Comp Safari - Speed event with multiple laps of a circuit (used to be bumpy and off road now seems to be suitable for Rally Cars?).

This might help untill someone with full knowledge comes along?

    Marc.

  5. "quote

if both landys are swbs and the axles are std then yes they will fit but there is a chance that the s111 axles could be 24 splines but hopefully they will be 10 spline like your s11 axles ?

    graham "

    Why?

Surely 24 spline is an improvement on 10 spline?

I thought that he will swap the complete axle so there would be no parts issues.

    Marc.

  6. TBH, I can't see what all the fuss is about. Mine runs out soon, which means I got mine not that long after they were introduced, and I remember the application form and all of the accompanying literature stating that it would need renewing in 10 years. Likewise, all of the news articles written about the photo licences at the time mentioned the 10 year period.

The fuss is why the f$%^ should I need to pay for something that used to be free! Plus its a royal nuisance for no reason, I could at least accept it if the charge was for changing the information but its not.

    Marc.

  7. Again, it's like for like. So you can replace say a drum braked 90 rear axle with a disc braked Disco or RRC axle as the axles are to all intents the same, the brake system carries no points. you can change coil springs or dampers as much as you like so long as all the mounting points remain the same. Up or down size a v8 petrol or 4 pot petrol or diesel, fine. swap a v8 for a tdi, lose engine points.

Swap a Disco body for a RRC and you'll lose the body points, stick a Land Rover body on and its SVA, as you will have to modify the chassis significantly to fit it.

The vehicle identity stays with the CHASSIS, original or brand new replacement, UNTIL you lose enough points OR modify it, then it's Q plate.

To put it in simple terms, if it's a straight forward nut and bolt job you should be fine.

Anything that involves cutting or welding the chassis puts you in SVA and Q territory.....technically!

In reality I doubt you'd have problem with welding the odd bracket or even shifting an engine mount.

You couldn't get away with changing all the body mounts, changing the wheelbase or cutting big lumps off.

    This is the dumb bit.

You can replace each corner of the chassis as a repair and it is OK no SVA.

However modify a RRC chassis so it has the same configuration as a LR and even though that is exactly what Land Rover did to make the early 90, 100 and 110 models that an SVA.

Sorry this is not for safety this is purely about concerns of ringing.

It's OK to make a copy of a classic out of new parts and pass that off as the real thing but not to make a Hybred where you are admitting it is not original and hurts no one.

    Phew rant over.

    Marc.

  8. Just to make it even clearer.

On the back is the entittlement section where it clearly states from and to.

My front expirery date is in 2010,

the rear dates are 2028 which is the 70 year date.

    So..

my entittlements will be valid but the card that they are written on will not be???

Add this to the attempt to remove entittlements (trailer) when you renew (well once anyway) and you have a government who is desperate to make us all break the law or gain more revenue (or both).

    Marc.

  9. Found whilst cleaning up :(

I'm planning to cut out the triangle section and replace with new steel

And the other side for comparison

suggestions for cleaning up the steel before painting as a power wire brush is inaccessable.

Sandblasting would be perfect but I don't have one or ready access to get to one.

My Hybred chassis rusted on the rear side of the cross member which is marginally easier to reach.

I used a saw blade to cut out the triangles (there are two per side on the RRC chassis stupidly left open at the top) then used a grind stone on a flexy drill shaft to clean to bare metal.

To be honest it took ages but I got it all out eventually. looking at your pictures it is possible that you will need to remove the metal on the chassis as well though you might get away with it if you are lucky as it may not just be the triangle that is rotten? Mine was rotten on the chassis leg as well as the missing triangles so I hade to plate the chassis first then add new fillet triangles (if this makes sense). I suggest that you clean the dirt away and check the metal on the chassis then paint the whole lot after your repairs. It would be wise to check both sides front and back of the cross member as rust is starting to take hold.

    Good luck.

  10. My first event was Comping with a mate.

My mate bought a comp motor and we took it to Arena Essex.

Before the event the motor ran perfectly and we were ready.

First thing we walked the course and became a bit worried.

As we patiently awaited our start time (we had decided to start near the back of our group),

    we put on our helmets,

    tightened our seat belts

    and waited,

as the vehicle we chose to start behind went to the start line my mate hit the starter button,

    nothing happened,

    not even a click. :o

I looked at my mate, he looked at me and we both screamed at each other in panic.

    Off came the helmets,

    Off came the seatbelts.

Out came the tools and off came the dash to find the wire that had fallen off.

We got to the start line just in time.

100 yards down the course my mate says he has to stop as he is going to throw up!

I just laughed as I thought he was kidding.

Half way round the course we came to a steep hill with a u turn on it. We got stuck at 90 degrees to the vertical and had to turn down hill to get free (this is against everything I had learnt about off road driving).

After this event we never bothered to walk the course again as it only caused concern.

Things got better from then on.

  11. not sure just chatting to people about the idea

is it poss to convert to coil without changing the chassis?

Not according to Designa Chassis, they add an extra 2 inches to the hight of the chassis in the centre area as the stress model they used suggests that a series chassis cannot take the different stress pattern that comes from the use of coils?

Also you have to alow for the vertical seperation of the rear axle radius arms and the "A" frame mounting. If the mountings are not far enough apart the handling will suffer.

Coiling it will of course put you in SVA land (or the replacement of the SVA). :(

    Marc.

  12. Starting the pump slowly and then partly withdrawing the nozzle as you increase the flow rate can work - or it did when I had my S2a.

    Chris

I also don't aim the nozzle straight down, I aim slightly upwards this allows the fuel to fall away from the nozzle thus removing some of the back preasure.

    Marc.

  13. I have had this more than once.

    Same as Goz says.

The Flash contact and the Main Beam contacts are both connected to the same point to power the relay.

If one lead breaks or the contact is faulty then you have the situation where the flash will still work but not the Main Beam.

Some times this is a weak contact in the cluster some times it is a broken wire.

You can either take it apart to look or replace it.

    Marc.

  14. Thanks for the reply Marc

Have already tried adjusting mixtures using the screws. What i am looking for is suggestions on what needles work the best with a land rover, because at the moment it is a saloon car set up with BAK needles that is standard for SD1 rover cars. My exhaust is fairly open but has a desent silencer at the back so back pressure is still there. Do you know what your needles are in your carbs Marc?

    Sorry I don't.

The Series 1 has a SD1 with a single large K&N and a straight through box and runs fine. The standard air filter was too restrictive and made it run very rich and no good at low down revs.

The freeflow filter made up for the freeflow exhaust and the mixture stayed correct afterwards.

The hybred has a RRC engine and two K&Ns and a sport exhaust with headers and I had to adjust the jet height until it worked OK and had the correct CO reading.

    Marc.

  15. I was very cautious at my local multistory and got out of my Hybred to look. A woman stopped an said that all would be OK as her 90 County is fine in there.

I thanked her but pointed out that the Hybred has a 2" lift and 7.50 tyres not 205s.

    Marc.

  16. May not your problem,

When I replaced my V8 in the Series1 I used new bolts around the bellhousing.

When I tried to turn it over it was solid, the bolts were too long and were hitting the flywheel.

It is possible the one bolt is too long? I know you said that you could not see any rubbing marks.

    Marc.
