  1. How about we all get rooftop signs made, saying something like ROW survey, or ROW rescue, something like that. a couple of orange spinning lights (they don't have to be wired up). Could even go on the offensive and use a clipboard, interview people along the road about their usage habits - even accept complaints about other users. Look official.

(just seen a nice old white lwb safari for sale at Calver - that could look nicely official)

Many years ago I took part in an AWDC National Green Lane day. All the vehicles got a sticker that says.

"Official Survey in Progress" on it.

It's still on the front of my Series 1.

Never had a bad word said agianst me! :P

    Marc.

  2. Not being picky but how does a kit that's £4.95 from the posted link work out as £10 posted first class?

Also the second posted link (KC5300) is a total lemon, unless you have a wideband O2 kit fitted it can't tell you the mixture any more accurately than the version with the coloured LED's (very rich/rich/lean/very lean is about the best you can deduce from any normal O2 sensor).

Maybe you should continue to look!!

The minimum postage from that link is £5

Guess what you cannot buy it from them anyway as ther min order is £10.

  3. Am looking for some advise on what needles to put in my SU carbs with a K&N air filter on each carb.

It is a 3.5 V8 out of a SD1 using the series 2A gearbox. The only mod is it has a range rover flywheel and 3.9 camshaft which i was told would give a better idle. It has BAK needles at the moment which i think is standard. Would rather have low down to mid range torque than flat out speed.

Any advise on what people have found to work well would be good.

Are you are looking to change the mixture only? If so then just adjust it using the screws?

I have K&Ns on both of my V8s plus sports exhausts but std cam.

At first the bottom end was useless but this was down to mixture not a cam change so you might have a different problem??

What have you done to the exhaust as it won't help if you put free flow filters and cam on a std exhaust.

  4. My prefered soulution was to cut the spring seats off the axle, twist the axle to correct the prop angle and weld them back on. The other option is to buy wedges to go between the axle and spring, but some people have experienced problems with them slipping. Shold also say that either soulution will increse the castor angel but I have not noticed any difference in the steering.

    Bill

Why should it increase the caster angle, the 1 ton shackles decreased the angle first, all you are doing is correcting it.

  5. Its just gone down here from 105.9 to 102.9p/litre, that was an hour ago when I filled the 110 up, still bloody expensive locally, its much cheaper 20miles away. :(

    Will :)

Thats what really pees me off.

I work 50 miles away from home and in the Shell there it is 4-5p a litre cheaper than the Shell at home.

When I asked why, the manager just shrugged to say what does he care.

  6. Mark is using a Quarter Mile clutch set up in the buggy. At first we used Demon Tweeks for spares but have since found it much much cheaper to go via the States. Even when you off set the cost of P&P it worked out better.

What about the current exchange rate? Does it still work?

    Marc.

  7. After my SeriesI had a moment at night I decided to rewire it.

I used 7 core for the rear but automotive wire for the rest. I added multi pin plugs for the removable bits.

1 peice front end and each dashboard section so they are removable.

I could not find waterproof ones at the time so used normal ones. Even after repeated dunkings I have not had a problem.

    Best bonus.

You will use much less wire than LR due to only including what you need not every option possible and you will know where to look if there is a problem.

    Marc.

  8. Because we have a set of ten splines in the garage and want to rebuild them off the vehicle, and have the cases powder coated. Saves disabling the vehicle whilst we do it

If you are upgrading to extra strength after market internals then fine, if you keep stock the you are better off buying a complete axle.

Have you considered the differences between axle cases?

If you upgrade a 10 spline axle to 24 spline you will still be stuck with the older style case.

I am not sure what this will affect but certainly LR decided to move from 6 bolt ends to 7 bolt on the later front axle. This was presumably to increase the strength?

    Marc.

  9. Either they had another carb that they needed bits for, or (more likely from my experiences) removed it as the choke did bugger all to help with cold running.

These single choke Webers aren't known for being a preferable type to use. It's often recommended to fit either the Solex or Zenith back on.

Strange I heard they were the thing everyone fitted??????

    PS

I have an unused and mostly boxed one (mouse nibbles) if required?

  10. Wow, its great to see that car is still doing the rounds. Inspired me too, along with the other nicely tricked Series 1s that were in the AWDC at the same time. Anyone remember "Thumper" (Barry Redman?) or "Flopper"(Colin Cowley)?

Pete must have had one of the first sets of BFG Muds in the country, I reckon, they were only available in 15" at the time, hence the eight spokes.

I have to blame my dad too. He was trialing (Ser 1 in CCV and SerII/Ltwts in RTV or expert trials and non-damaging trials as they were known respectively) when I was small and some of my earliest memories are from AWDC events at Slab, Weavers Down, Hungry Hill, Broxhead Common and the like, and Anglian ROC events at Double Arches Quarry and Sundon Pit.

Latterly my dad did some speed events in a RR classic and then a 110 Hi-cap - I got the speed bug early and it was straight into speed events for me!

BTW - Those photos of the Series 1 were taken at another long lost and missed AWDC venue, Peter's Pit near Gravesend.

    Hi,

I am glad that I am not the only one then.

Pete's Series1 (named Missing Sid due to a permanent misfire on one cylinder) was built as a result of watching Barry in Thumper, I bought Missing Sid from Barry after Pete had sold it to him. Amazingly Barry lent me Thumper when we went to France as he had just bought a 90. When in rush hour traffic in Beyou a French gentleman joined the road without stopping as it his right of way. Barry told me that he Mildly miffed himself laughing as I swerved (in his motor) and all the traffic tried to avoid me.

My fist trial was as a passenger at Double Arches, my favourites were Weavers and Arena Essex as that was the first place me and a mate raced.

    Marc.

    PS.

Thumper is also still around as Barry's daughter now owns it.

  11. When I was 16 I got hold of a load of old custom car magazines and there was a series of articles by the mags photographer about building a V8 S1 and that was it I didn't want a custom car anymore. Took me 5 years to get my first Land Rover (20 years ago) and haven't been without one since. The photographers name was Pete Robain, does anybody else blame him?

    This one by any chance?

    post-1119-1235395780_thumb.jpgpost-1119-1235395816_thumb.jpg

Pete Robain is leaning against the S1.

Pete's freind whom I bought it off very kindly gave me the magazines as he still had them, apparently it was used for an AWDC Christmass Card but he does not have a copy.

My Avatar is what it looks like now.

When I bought it years ago I had two sets of friends into LR. I bought it off one friiend the night before going to work in Germany.

When I got back I drove to another friends house where the other group were having a BBQ, as I drove down the road they heard the motor and came out. One friend immediately ran back in and came out with the pictures from his wall. That was the first I knew about its history.

  12. Hi Jay,

I don't have KAM lockers but have been to see them for other products and have found Kevin and Steve extremely helpful.

Some people have had problems with early halfshafts apparently but as NAS90 has said it may be down to the extreme (?) usage?

I would strongly suggest that you phone them.

    Marc.

  13. Hi,

The rocker covers suggest an early engine but that does not really mean anything as they could have changed.

When my LR had an early P5 engine the easiest way to tell was that as it was a 10.5:1 CR engine it pinked really easily on hills or when going up hill.

Welcome to proper LR driving

When it runs properly it will have more smiles per mile than anything you've driven.

  14. Blimey how many do you need as the Q-Max looked cheap to me (round ones anyway).

I have had limeted experience so I am sure a grown up will come along soon.

The adjustable cutter will need to be perfectly aligned otherwise all hell will let loose. And you really don't want to get anything cought in it as it goes round!

Haveing spent more time with a flypress and punches than drills, the best result would in my opinion be from the Q-Max if they are up to the job.

I made my dash with punches and there is no extra work or mess afterwards.

  15. I have one from JL industrial, its made by Chester and has worked fine making my cage.

There current list price is £63.50 so a lot cheaper than those you listed, probable not the strongest construction but its stood up to a fair amount of abuse.

There web site is www.mscjlindustrial.co.uk and it is on page 1561 of there cataloge, always had good fast service from them so far as well, they are geared up to sell to machine shops and so far have always delivered with in a couple of days.

Worth having a look through there special offers and sales fliers (available as pdf's on there site) as they often have the notcher reduced.

  16. I've made little plywood boxes (sad? yup!) with a hole in the top that I traced off a gasket. The exposed bits then sit in the box, and the box sits on the shelf with the pinion pointing up. Saves the thing rolling around gathering dust and muck.

For long term storage I heard of people cutting up axle cases and welding the side openings up with plate.

When the spare diff is bolted in it is hermetically sealed and safe from damage.

  17. espescially when Merc times allows us 0.2 of an hour to change a set of wiper blades.

This is what I think really kills it, the book of job times has some outragous times for performing replacements.

Allthough small garages still use the book to estimate jobs, it is up to them if they charge for the book time or the actual time involved.

  18. Well, having examined things a bit closer it seems that the flywheel I had was skimmed to half its original width, so I used a spare one I had lying about. Had to mark and drill this. I will most likely end up grinding the end of the crank and using the spigot supplied. The engine is not destined for anything else and, after a bit of measuring, it seems like a bush inside the V8 crank wouldn't be very big. Incidently, my gearbox shaft fits inside the V8 crank with a bit of room to spare.

Flywheel might have been a car (SD1) manual flywheel.

the Rare SD1 Manual is a direct fit with the correct clutch parts to fit the conversion, whereas the RRC one needs re-drilling.

RRC flywheel give great off road work but is a pain when on road due to the huge mass when changing gear.

    Marc.
