  1. Hi Les,

    How did it go?

Have you retried the Diff and halfshafts yet? Apparently the key is to see if the halfshafts bind?

I spoke to Tomcat Motorsport about the way to do what you have done.

They had two comments, the 1st was to use a jig (well done there) the second was that with good welding you won't need a sleeve as well. It won't matter now that you have finished.

So the big question, does it all fit now? I hope so as you have made a really great job of the work.

    Marc.

  2. Hi Les,

I am a bit confused, if you have not altered the swivel flange in any way then the only reason must be the sping mountings/bump stops that are in the wrong place?

If this is the case then surely the diff angle is wrong or did you fit the sping mountings/bump stops to get the diff angle correect and not notice the change in the pin angle?

The answer to the questions above will dictate what your correct course of action is to fix the problem.

As to which part to re-drill if needed, this depends upon how long you expect the axle to last? If it will only last one set of swivels then drill the swivels, otherwise re-drill the axle so that you can fit new swivels in the future.

Hope that you resolve this easily and successfully.

Having investigated the axle ends a bit, I was told that LR use some really complicated sounding bit of kit to friction weld the ends onto the axle tube.

Its a shame that they did not go the way that other (US) manufactures did which is to slide the axle end over the tube then weld.

This way it is easy to change an end to alter the angle or narraow the axle.

    Marc.

  3. I might be persuaded to come out and play a bit!!

If you have not done Violets lane yet, I can take you down there if you like? I'm always up for a bit of wading.

See me & SWMBO's video of it

Might be nice to find out more about these lanes near Berkhampstead too.

    Martin

Wow :D that looks amazing, I love lanes where the trees make a tunnel but this lane looks like a must drive even if it is easy.

    Marc.

  4. I have finally tested my new tool.

It's basically a mini wireless camera connected to a laptop in order to capture the video.

The camera runs on a 9V battery, so no cables.

As first check I've investigated my axles as I wondered about some play in the steering at higher speeds. The outcome was that the axle is shifting in relation to the chassis. Panhard rod bushes are new and the remaining movement seems to be normal. Therefore it seems to be a landrover thing and I'm not concerned anymore.

    See Video here:

Next will be check for play in prop-shafts.

    Great Video.

Out of interest is it my eyes or is there lateral movement of your axle during the stearing changes between 2:26 and 2:30?

It might just be a change of light or it could be play in the bolt? if you rock the video back and forth it appears to move?

    Marc.

  5. Hmmmmm

    http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyrspeed.html

Read their words - box of frogs  ???

It was one of the reasons I went Simex JTs (Q=100MPH) vs Simex ETs (was 62MPH now 75 MPH)

with a LR Factory V8 at 86 mph Top speed, :)..... but the linky above does seem an 'interesting little find' :) ?

    Nige

    Intersting but still confusing.

My old BMW V8 M5 had Z rated tyres which the site suggests as:

Speed Category "ZR" For vehicles with a speed capability over 240 Km/h (e.g. 205/40 ZR 17) or 150mph.

Now the M5 was electronicaly limited to 155mph ish (not very accurate) and no top speed quoted although a standard spec one was aledegedly seen at 185-190mph in Germany.

So the limited speed must presumably be OK for the law otherwise an actual top speed would need to be quoted?

The problem is that does a "ZR" tyre have to have a maximum speed, or just over 150mph?

    Marc.

  6. I've run my S1 around topless and screenless every summer for the last 15 years. Be prepared for the odd soaking. Like others have, said bumble bees hurt and raindrops feel like dried peas at 50mph. The S1 comes as standard with a rotating rear view mirror and fittings to secure the screen flat, later models may need a strap to stop it flying up.

If you drive at night I'd advise putting the screen up. The headlights seem to to attract every flying bug in the county and, while large moths can be unpleasant, stag beetles nearly knock you out of your seat!

    topless.jpg

I haven't use my S1 without a top for a while but I love the way they change from looking all short and stubby to long and low :) ooh err.

I try to leave my tops as easily removable as possible in the summer, the Truck cab is only bolted in by 4 bolts ans a couple of locating pins.

  7. Hi all when the sun comes out this summer I want to take the hardtop (90 csw) off my landy and drive around with the doors tops off and possibly windscrren flat. I have a internal roll cage but where does this stand me if I were to be pulled over do I need to inform the DVLA everytime I take the roof off.

Since its not a big job I will have it on and off lots over the summer but dont want to be charged with having an unsafe vehicle. any advice?

Why would you need to inform the DVLA?

More importantly where are your seat belt top mounts? If they are on the cage then no probs but if they are on the hard top then you will have no seat belts which is illegal.

    Marc.

  8. Pat.

If you read my post on this subject..A precedent {SP} has already been set in a court of law in the UK. A Rover SD1 driver was succcessfully prosecuted for using a lower speed rating tyre than the manufactures recomended. The drivers argument was that as there was a blanket speed limit if 70mph he only required tyres to that speed. The courts didn't agree and found him guilty.

    mike

This is the IMPORTANT truth in this topic. Once the precedent has been set in court this is the deciding factor in further cases of prosecusion. The C&U Regs offer the LAW, but a precedent set in court decides whether the Police will prosecute for further cases.

If the Police know that they will lose if your Brief nows of a precedent then they will not bother.

  9. Just thought I'd keep you all updtaed on this...

The wheels and tyres turned up over the weekend, so it would have been rude not to fit 'em...

    OMG... Soooo big!!

Thanks again for your advice chaps... in the end that very nice chappy at JCS sorted us out :) I'd highly recommend him if you want Mudzillas or Creepy Crawlers.

    Dan B)

Does the road slant or have you only got one side on :D

    Sweet look though.

    Marc.

  10. Another vote for left foot braking.

But not LR. Moggy 1000 on wet grass and Nissan Serina on anything (carp traction with no weight in back) also works.

Gentle application, just enough to slow the spinning wheel and off you go. Probably.

But your left foot is used to stamping on the clutch and it's very hard to apply gentle force without practice.

Good thread I have been contemplating this for some time. Both of my motors are dead at the mo so I could not confirm to myself.

This thread mirrors my thoughts so thanks.

    Marc.

  11. Why Defender owners only? Is this a new elietest forum :D

I used to walk on the roof of my Hybred to prune my front tree until I cracked the windscreen :(

I have also used the Series 1 Truck Cab to climb up to a bedroom window to break into my house late at night after forgetting my keys

    Marc.

  12. I've got one of these and it does a reasonable job, although we've had to beef it up after some sustained use and some stubborn old beads. I've also bolted an old LR hub to the top as the mount and clamp is a bit poor and runs the risk of damaging alloys. Now I can bolt LR wheels on securely and if I need to change anything else it unbolts from the top.

    H

    Ah,

What a good idea, I will have a hub set free soon so I will look at this. For now I have ground a step into the clamp to match the LR centre hole.

    Marc.

  13. HI,

After all your assistance I could not find a price for the Aussie Tyre Changer equipment so I decided to buy one of these

    post-1119-1241374516_thumb.png

for £48 with delivery insurance and VAT off Ebay Link

I ordered it Saturday Night and it arrived Tuesday. They even taped bin bags around the top and bottom in case the courier stood it in a puddle.

Tried it out and the first tyre I virtually changed using the tyre lever only as Seeley aren't good on instructions. The second tyre I changed the proper way and it was a doddle, even though I had not bolted it to the floor yet! It really needs to be bolted to work and be safe.

No more Tyre rip off shops for me.

    Marc.

  14. Also imagine the looks on peoples faces at a run what you brung/ track day if underneath the very nasty exterior there is a sorted engine and suspension/brake package so the thing is indecently fast.

Would appeal to my sense of humour.

    Pete

I would agree except that it was canned as it had leaking vitals (Brakes etc.) so it cannot have been well engineered to suceed?

    Marc.
