    6cyl SWB?

I have a 2.6 flywheel and that has the bush fitted as per the 2.25s. Problem is the 2.6 has a 6 bolt centre whereas the 3.0 has an 8 like the 2.25s. My motor is still in use so I can’t take it apart yet otherwise I would be able to trial fit my 2.25 flywheel to the 3.0 engine. Failing that it’s a case of sourcing the right 3.0 flywheel which isn’t that easy.

Actually, does that mean the gearbox input shaft just fits into the flywheel and not the end of the crank?

    6cyl SWB?

Hi Soren I’ve just checked the flywheel you gave me and yes, the spigot bush is in the flywheel. I’m also told that the manual 3.0 Rover P5 flywheel has the 8 bolt pattern so I just need to check where the spigot is on that. At the end of the crank there’s a 19/20 mm diameter hole about 25mm deep which presumably is for the gearbox input shaft? Can anyone tell me the length and diameter of the input shaft that fits into the crank on a S3 box please as I don’t have one to measure?

    6cyl SWB?

I think I’m losing the will to live with this one. Not only is the SU HD8 carb unique to this engine (aka impossible to find) I’m now told by the guys on the Rover P5 forum that the crank on my engine is only suitable for an auto box and won’t take a flywheel and spigot bush to use with a manual box. I’m going to take the torque converter off the engine tomorrow and see if the flywheel I got off Soren will fit or not. If it doesn’t then I might have to rethink my plans.
  5. I expect a radiator specialist should be able to resolder it for you. Can’t see it being a massive task but the rad will probably need to come out to do the job properly.
  6. Sounds like the Series just needs some basic maintenance judging by some of the issues you’ve described but as above, its just about which one you prefer.

I just found out the carb should be a SU H8 for the Rover 3.0 so will look out for one of those.

    6cyl SWB?

I’m going to need a carb for my engine as it’s missing but I’ve noticed that there were two types available for the 6 cylinder engines. Mine is a Rover P5 3.0 and would have originally come with the Stromberg CD175 but there’s also an SU AUD 247 carb available for the Landrover 6 cylinder versions. I’ve always understood that the SU carbs were more reliable and tuneable than the Strombergs but this may not be the case so can anyone offer any suggestions as to which one to opt for and why?

    6cyl SWB?

Normally the 6 cylinder LWB gearbox mounts are further back on the chassis but as my SWB gearbox position will remain unchanged, I will need to move the engine mounts forward to compensate for the longer engine. If the design of the mount is the same as the 4 cylinder ones then it’s just a case of providing the chassis supplier with the right distance to move them forward if the height remains unchanged. I’ll opt for a removable gearbox crossmember at the same time.

    6cyl SWB?

Cheers, there’s no great hurry, I’m just going through some planning for the chassis. It’s likely I’ll use a new galvanised chassis but will need to ask the supplier to build it with the right engine mounts in the correct place before it gets dipped and expect they will probably ask me to tell them where I want the mounts. Initial thoughts were to bolt the engine and gearbox together and then measure between the centres of the respective engine/gearbox mounts to get a distance. Then using the gearbox chassis mount position as the datum point, measure the same distance forward to determine where each engine mount will need to sit hence the question about height. Hopefully if I do it that way I will account for any manufacturing variances on my vehicle. Unless anyone can suggest an alternative method?

    6cyl SWB?

More questions if anyone can help... Are the 6 cylinder chassis engine mount brackets the same as the 4 cylinder ones or are they different? And are the 6 cylinder chassis mounts the same height on the chassis as the 4 cylinder ones? If for instance I cut off the 4 cylinder mounts and moved them forward by whatever distance I need to, can I just reweld them in line with the original mounts?

Tak Soren, will be over the week after next 👍

Thanks Steve, that’s much appreciated. Joe

    6cyl SWB?

No need Arjan, I’m in DK several times a month so calling in to see Soren won’t be a problem as he’s quite close to where I work. Carrying a flywheel in my suitcase though....💪

    6cyl SWB?

The search is on for a bell housing to do the conversion. Have I understood it right that the Series 2a & Series 3 6 pot bell housings are the same as the 2.0 Series 1s? Might make the search a bit easier if they are... If anyone knows of any bell housings, flywheels or other 6 cylinder parts for sale a PM would be appreciated. One other question. The donor engine for mine came off an auto P5. I know I will need to remove the torque converter etc but does anyone know if the flywheel housing is still the same as the Landrover one? There’s a picture of it earlier in the thread.
  16. To be honest I’ve only seen the photos but I think I now have enough information to decide that the vehicle is a S3 with a 2a front end and not a ‘66 2a. Disappointed but I won’t be going any further with it and hope that no other unsuspecting person buys it. Thanks all for your help.
  17. I’m okay with it having the Salisbury and in the short term, even the S3 bulkhead, so long as everything else checks out ok. I’ve asked for the first three digits of the chassis number that will let me compare against a list that Glencoyne have on their website. Edit: I’ve just had a thought. Wouldn’t a 1966 LWB have underseat fuel tanks or a filler next to the door? Looking at photos of other similar vehicles I can’t see a rear wing filler cap.
  18. Cheers, it wasn’t so much originality as opposed to legality if you get my drift.
  19. Chassis number is front LHS dumbiron isn’t it? Or RHS, I can’t remember now....
  20. Cheers. So am I right in thinking that the only way to determine if a 2a is genuine is to check the transmission brake mounting on the chassis? A 2a with S3 bulkhead and Salisbury axle but a 2a front panel and wings is ringing alarm bells for me.
  21. Trying to find out what year the Salisbury axle was first introduced on the 109 6 cylinder models. Would a 1966 109 have a Salisbury axle fitted as standard? Are there any differences between the LWB chassis that have the Rover or Salisbury axles? For example would a 2a chassis have the rear spring outriggers mounted outboard of the chassis rails?
  22. Hi Richard. I know it won’t look original by any stretch but you can buy silicone hoses for this sort of thing along with the bends etc that you need. Normally reserved for the Scooby boy racers but they are purpose built for the job and if you could do it in black hose it might not look too bad. Just a thought but appreciate you might like to keep the look at least in the last century.
  23. Some great information and photos there, thanks for sharing. I do like a techy thread 👍

    6cyl SWB?

I’m in the middle of building a workshop to house the rebuild of the 88 along with the engine conversion. Once I’m up and running I’ll start a proper build thread as I think I’m going to need a chuck up with this one. Ideal world would have been fitting this engine into a ‘66 LWB but I don’t have one so the 88 will have to do.

    6cyl SWB?

I believe that’s what this one is, the 130bhp version. Not sure what the wooden handle is on top of the rocker cover? Maybe for the jack?
