  2. If you have no problem moving large files from one computer to the other then you can download SP2 from your laptop and move it to your PC. You do this by going here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx and finding the link that says 'download and deploy to multiple computers' Note that its BIG, about 266 meg Im baffeld as to why Norton is playing up.
  3. The frequency (or channel) you should use is generally about experimentation. Some frequencies will be absorbed by your walls better than others, so changing the channel might make the signal stronger further away. Also any other wireless device, such as a DECT phone, or a analog wireless phone, or a microwave, or anything really, can be on the same frequency. Experimentation is the best way to find a clear channel. The channels overlap in frequency so go up in bands of three, then tweak! MAC address filtering is not encryption. It is just limiting the router to only let in certain network cards connect. This should in theory stop all others using your connection even if you have no encryption, because no two network cards in the world should have the same MAC address. But as has been mentioned with a bit of know-how can fake a MAC address... WPA and WEP are two differenent types of encryption. WPA is more secure as WEP can be cracked with enough time and patience and the right bit of software. Hope this helps. Stephen
  4. Ahh, the rear bulb is not working! Which is odd since its only a couple of hours since it passed its MOT....hence my assumption the bulbs were OK. Ta. Must remember to check the obvious... So now I need to order a single bulb over the internet - postage should be about 30p
  5. Hi, My right hand indicators on the Disco have speeded up, and are much faster than the lefties. My un technical mind figures that the relay must be a bit squiffy, but the only way to know is to replace it! So my local Halfrauds have three in stock but none on the shelf ("Must have been stolen"). So Im looking for a reliable internet car part store I can click through to an buy bits for delivery asap. You know the sort of thing, click click, and the next day Postman Pat is knocking on the door with Jess holding a small package in its mouth. I have used Famous Four before and had good service, but the postage is expensive. Other places I have googled for charge four quid for p+p, which for a ten quid part is too much. So does anyone have a suggestion for good places to go internet shopping? On this occasion I dont need a really obscure LR part for a 50year old landrover, just a generic part, so it doesnt even have to be a LR specialist... Ta in advance... Stephen
  6. Maybe I need to strap one to my Laptop as well..... http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=32550 I Note that this post is OT OT ?!?!?
  7. Dunno about Jamaca, but this was in St Lucia...
  8. <suck eggs> The first rule of internet is never click on a link in an email. The second rule of internet is never click on a link in an email. The third rule of internet is never click on a link in an email. For instance guess where this goes if you click on it: http://www.mybank.com And with the use of some commas and things you can get the actual url in the status bar at the bottom of the browser window to look more like mybank.com but still link to the BBC. So all scumbag1 has to do is make a web site that looks like the banks website and let you give him all your bank details. </suck eggs>
  9. My clock back light cost 50 quid to replace. It cost 1.50 for the bulb from halfords that works a treat and just clips in... ...however it cost me £45+ to get a new drinks holder tray as I broke some teeth off the soft open close cog by accident trying to remove it to get the blasted clock unit out!
  10. I got my '95 300tdi from Shipley Bridge a couple of years ago, all I can say is that the warranty was well used! I had a flat bed taxi twice, once for all the top plug of the coolant system fialing leaking over the (previously very clean) engine about three days after picking it up and for the vacuum pump going. It took three or four attempts to get the vacuum pump changed, mind you it resulted in me getting a number of new ABS sensors! It was in for another coolant leak spotted when I had the thing serviced by harris-mayes in Watford, all under warranty. To Jim's (the owners) credit all were completed without charge to me, and I had a loan car for what turned out to be week long periods (partly because I live a fair way away) without the thing. Its annoying that I had to find these problems! The disco has been great since all these problems were sorted, no major probs. It came very clean (but with signs of the Japanese habit for heavy smoking). The rubber seals around the windows are detriorating (Japanese sun I suppose). I figure that the things stand for a very long time while in transit (all that sea air might be good for people, but not for a lump of steel!) and suffer a little. They also show signs of use, on mine some of the dash contols needed some attention when I got home. Also try to get a replacement radio, Shipley Bridge put in a frequency shifter to get them to work in the UK, its OK but they show the wrong frequencies! Mine also looks like it used to have a CD changer in it, dunno where it went! I did try to get some repairs done elsewhere after about nine months but the warranty company didnt have a record of my car. Jim was apologetic, he must have "lost the paperwork"! And it be fair I did get confirmation of the warrany after about 11 months. It was a bit worrying though. And thinking about it I had a problem getting it registered. Ship Bge had put me down as the owner of the vehicle two weeks before I paid for the thing. This resulted in a dates mismatch and the DVLA stopped the paperwork. Easy to sort out just hassle. So I guess Jim is a bit of a dodgy geezer (see paper work problems), but made good on the warranty in the end and there was no argument over getting the thing fixed. Overall I love my Disco, and it has been reliable after the first rash of problems were sorted out. Hope this helps Stephen
  11. I have a 1995 Disco and when I asked my LR dealer for a quote for replacing them at the 10 year mark I fell off my chair. Something like £2900 including labour and VAT. "No thank-you" was my response. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=302&hl=
  12. Im a fan too... Automatics are fantastic for traffic jams and queuing, I find they remove quite a bit of the driving stress when confronted with congestion. Doesnt the viscous coupling reduce wear on the whole engine / drivetrain by eliminating knocks?
  13. The driver obviously had a camera too, 'cause he sent a photo of the same incident into Land Rover Monthly ...news travels!
  14. My 1995 Disco had a problem with the ABS, I had both sensors replaced but I still had the problem. At low speed the ABS would kick in, particually approacing junctions, and the ABS light would come on. Turned out to be the vacuum pump went, which becuase of low suction caused the ABS to kick in. If your sensors are OK then it might be worth having a look at your pump! Stephen
  15. Have a look at this http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=811
  16. I might be wrong but I thought some HUBs will automatically detect when you have a cross-over cable and switch over about so it works fine.
  17. There are three types of security on my access point, I use (128bit, more bits more secure!) WEP which requires a "key" which is random text I type in on both the access point and my laptop. Once they have the same key they can talk to each other... IMHO, reading the forum in the back garden having a beer in the sun is the mutts nutts!
  18. I originally wanted to work out the best way to work out consumption and the only way I could figure it out is to brim fill each time, only that way can you work out how much has been used.
  19. > Pretty comprehensive You should see the graphs! ;-) Its interesting to see what other people have got out of their motors. I dont think I have ever gone over 30mpg on a tank, but I guess the fact that its an Auto with a dash of A/C probably explains it. Im glad Im not the only one that has a spreadsheet!
  20. I keep really good records of my fuel consumption in my 1995 Auto 300. I drive about 45 miles per workday 50-60% on the M25 and pootle about at the weekends. I have a heavy foot as well sometimes, 70mph when I can on the motorway etc, race milkfloats at the lights... that sort of thing. On average I get 435mls out of a tank (that is an average of 74lt) over which I have averaged 26.6mpg however my normal average recently is ~28mpg as the stats are skewed by some breakdowns and onetime when a feul pipe broke, plus after redex and some 'quality' fuel being put through it (I realised the Shell garage near work was consitantly ~2p cheaper then Sainsburys near home) I think things have improved a bit. To marvel at my work see: Fuel Stats The shaded squares are calculated as I has a glitch!
  21. Ta for the replies, going to do some more research! As you know the disco doesnt have isofix, so maybe look into the lap belt solution. Ta again!
  22. Hi, The mrs is in the family way and we are looking for a car seat for our disco (A 1995 300). We need a rear facing one. We have been to Mothercare and tried the two types they have. The first type would not sit properly on the seat as the base of the seat is too short and the seatbelt is not long enough to easily fit around the head of the seat. Mothercare also do a second type that has a seat base that you fit then clip in the baby seat. This has a long leg that is supposed to hook over the edge of the seat and sit on the floor, but because of the shape of the floor it wont sit flat! All they could suggest is going to Mammas and Papas! So we tried them and the belt would fit and it sat correctly on the seat but the buckle (female end you clip into) has too long a strap so the clip is too close to the plastic base. This means that there is too much sideways force on the buckle and it will not hold in an accident. So we are a bit stuck! Obviously I should have waited until the kid was going to school and a school run was needed before we got the Disco Does anyone have any advice for me as to which seat they have used? Or do I need to look for a shorter strap for the buckle? Any help would be appreciated.
  23. No, its an exhaust that claims to create a 'vortex' which creates a vacuum to suck the exhaust gases out of the engine. http://www.unicat4.com/New%20media/LRM_Uni...cat4_Vortex.pdf They were at Billing and kindof persueded me....
  24. If the "S" port has a square hole in the middle it could be a s-video output for connecting it to a projector or such like. Some laptops have a keypad mode where you press Fn-F11 or something and the keys "789", "uio", "jkl", "m,." become a keypad. My Toshiba and my old Sony one do. Not quite as good as a norm keybord but heh! IMO best way to clean a keyboard is to take it apart and clean it in the bath (or similar large water holding vessal) , then put it in the oven (on a low setting!) to dry it out. Goes without saying that it needs to be very dry before re-use. (No responsibility for broken baths, ovens or keyboards taken)
  25. Was watching the last Top Gear on the BBC and the new Merc S-Class actually opens the windows before setting off the airbags to prevent ear damage from the rapid increase in pressure in the car. Anyway whats least toxic, sodium azide or a face full of steering wheel? Was chatting to the local garage about airbags last night as well and they reckon its one of the main causes of car writeoffs these days. Ta Stephen
