I drove one recently and thought it was a non issue. Maybe a long haul would say differently, but I'm not convinced it would be an issue. A tall and/or big person might have issues I guess, I'm not tall, so can't really vouch on behalf of someone who is, but again I'd be surprised. But I do wonder if it just media hyperbole more than anything, most auto only cars have some sort of footrest these days, including the new Defender.

Maybe all that is needed is an aftermarket option to add an additional upright section to change the angle of your foot. As per the new Defender above.

Non issue to you maybe but obviously, as has been said, it is an individual thing. Those with a sensitive / iffy back / leg / foot or who simply bear the effects of aches and pains that often accompany aging may find the feature somewhat more of an issue.

I thought it was a good review; He is honest, not just bashing stuff, but also pointing out good things.

I mean, he had to borrow a Grenadier from a friend, as Ineos wouldn't give him one to try.

Because of this, he could easily have made a very bad review, but he didn't.

The footrest, which he thought was a non-item at the beginning, was the deal breaker in the end though.

I reckon Jim will have to use his persuasion to the best with Magna Styer, as that footrest is hurting sales for RHD countries.

Having watched it all and agree, it is a decent, balanced but overly long review. His conclusions tally with mine, also I too could not live with the intrusion into the driver footwell on the RHD version - but in my own case this is down to my own particular health issues.

I can never understand how someone can hate money enough to sell a new vehicle within months of buying it.

I suppose the fact it's +VAT is a hint as to who/why it was purchased, but even so.

Perhaps they just couldn't get on with the footrest. Who knows.

I doubt we shall ever know but there is not a one size fits all answer. The buyer / partner might dislike the vehicle, suddenly run into cashflow issues, been taken ill... who knows?

Flux are ridiculously cheap on my modified 110, around £120 I think.  For my standard Freelander the AA offered the best value cover at a few hundred £.

I was with NFU for years until their premiums started getting ridiculous, over £800 for the Freelander!

It surprises me to hear of others getting decent quotes out of them,  I'm 60 with no claims or convictions in a "good" postcode, I don't think they wanted the business.

I do think it is a lot to do with the office you deal with as premiums can vary depending on which one you use or if you deal with the national HQ so to speak.

  5. My memory is hazy but I had the centre panel out far enough on a couple of my Puma's so that is easy enough but I can't recall what the access is like to the cig socket as that is down low but I did need to take various live feeds for this and that so if the socket was a ball ache I'd have got the juice from elsewhere. From memory undoing the two front screws and easing the panel forward and up until it is unclipped. The radio comes out with DIN keys - the thin ones I believe. If it's coded you may need that if you unplug the wiring. I think it all comes out easily and there's enough room for plenty of air at the back of it.

    Edited to add...

  6. I wouldn't be too snooty about current 4x4 pickups, they are popular for valid reasons. My gut feeling is that big users like utilities will continue to use them en masse from the big manufacturers [rather like the Power Network Ranger cherry picker that turned up at the farm when we had problems last week] perhaps subbed by a few Grenadiers [but to do what?] Charities are something else entirely.

My gut feeling is Grenadiers will continue to be a bit niche, certainly expensive and as a result will not be adopted by fleet users to the same degree that Defenders were, not while 4x4 pickups are available from the big makers with big parts and repair facilities.

As an aside, if my last brand new Defender had been as reliable as the 3.2 auto Ranger it was replaced with or my current D Max I would have held onto the Defender. In fact all the Defenders I bought new spent more time back and forth undergoing warranty work than either of these so called cheap pickups  [cheap at over 30k - hmmm].

I've never read Evo but I guess it must have gone downhill since Mr Metcalfe's days. I can't imagine him writing such twoddle.

Having driven one of Sir Jim's products I was very impressed. It's a much more relaxing and comfortable experience than my aged 110.

I think most modern 4x4's would be somewhat more relaxing and comfortable than an aged 110 🙂

  8. 1974 Ford 4000 satisfies my classic tractor itch. There's a DB 1490 with a loader sat at the back of the yard here, when I was given the Big C diagnosis and subsequently laid up in hospital for weeks at the end of 2020 I kept messaging the family to regularly start and run the machinery but they overlooked the DB. Months later I was able to get back in the DB which started fine but found the clutch pedal on the floor as the slave cylinder had leaked the contents of the clutch system. I ordered replacement bits but just have not got round to fitting them so the tractor sits there unloved and slowly turning green. I perhaps ought to get it sold before winter sets in and the land gets too wet.

    One year later

Yep, just re joined the forum! I left when l sold my old Defender but re joined to rabbit about the new one. As there is a section of the forum dedicated to the new "Pretender"

And if the insurance scare on new Defenders comes to fruition l will be out of it and back in an old Defender probably a 2.2TDCi.

Friend just had to sell her new Defender as the insurance renewal went up to £3,000
I won't know until October when my renewal comes through.

What was she paying to insure the vehicle prior to the price increase?

With the 6 speed box on the Puma, it’s worth checking the history to see if the intermediate shaft in the adapter between the main and transfer box has ever failed and / or been replaced.
