  1. the dovetail was'nt fitted to my defender or the door i bought so this is new territory for me. it makes sense to have a dovetail so it looks like i will have to buy a whole new set and fit it to both the door and door jam. and yes i have the spare on the door which might explain why the old door split!! i'll give bearmach a call, any ideas where i can buy a dovetail set other than bearmach? cheers
  2. this my door no dovetail and i can't see any bolt holes for it! any idea where i can get a dove tail, can't see any on the usual online stores or ebay. cheers
  3. what dove tail? i would be grateful for a clue, sounds like this could be the problem. all the weight is on the hinges. i have'nt fitted anything else. is the dovetail a shaped block the door rests on at the bottom? and do you know whether it would fit a 300tdi. thanks for your help
  4. Hi i have a1995 90 which had a knackered rear door. i replaced the door with a series door which fits very well. however i could only get the door to lock using the original slam type lock [front door style if that makes sense?] it locks well and seems fine until you drive down bumpy roads when the shifting of the body and door make the lock rattle like mad. i have adjusted the lock and even drilled the bolt holes oblong to pull the door in and squash the door seal - still rattles any ideas? i have'nt tried but do you know whether the original lock would fit a series door, the exterior key hole positions look different in the doors! thanks bm52
  5. hello fellow lurker i lurked as well for a while, i am new to LR's as well, had mine since Feb '08 and i have also found this forum full of very useful information and helpful advice from the members. enjoy your defender cheers
  6. just replaced both my props, both completley knackered the above advice is sound i would only add 2 points. 1. use new nuts, the old ones will be 'tired' 2. make sure you thoroughly grease everything. i greased before i put the news ones on and then a week later after the grease has been allowed to spread around all the joints. i would also take advantage while the props are off to check or change the gearbox oils - much easier. cheers
  7. see my post above i took off the manky old things and just bolted the modulars on. did'nt have to alter the steering stops and it has a pretty tight turning circle! was i lucky????
  8. when i got mine it had 3 different keys. it's very easy to change the barrels. about 10 mins per door ... then my rear door broke [weight of wheel], bought a new door off ebay but it is a series door and now i have 3 keys again small price to pay for the enjoyment i get from it though
  9. heres mine with 235 85 16 BFG ATs [that's if the uploaded piccy has worked?]
  10. binding brake on one side? swivel top bearing? panhard balljoint worn? mine was caused by the swivel bearing and later on by a 'loose' panhard balljoint. now it runs straight and true and brake in a straight line. however, it is a 300tdi Defender regards bm52

  13. hi can anyone advise on the best way to add a sound proof mat under the bonnet. i was wondering if you can buy waterproof 'felt' on a roll and cut off what you need. thanks bm52
  14. Hi i'm thinking about going to Boxgrove on the 9th? Has anyone been there and will a standard 90 with ATs manage the course. i have heard that at Slindon you need MTs? advice welcome please, thanks bm52
  15. i had exactly the same on my 300tdi and i have bfg at's i replaced my swivels and panhard balljoint [the one on the n/side] and now it brakes dead straight. i think it was the ball joint - was quite worn. hope this helps BM52
  16. i use a pressure washer attached to rain filled water butts and dump the mud straight onto the front lawn
  17. needed to fill up and used Wynns - i'll let you know how it worked and whether i noticed any difference cheers bm52
  18. mind if i ask a related question. how often should you add injector cleaner to the fuel? i have never had a satisfactory answer. I have a 1995 300tdi so i assume adding injector cleaner every few tanks will help? but i am no expert. thanks bm52
  19. one week without driving the 90 felt a lot longer than a week................ fitted new props today with help from my son. easier than i thought. all vibrations and horrid noises have gone. thet old prop sliding joints were siezed solid on both of them with! happend afyer my last offroad trip, no idea why. all is smooth and easy now, a complete joy to drive. thanks for all the advice.
  20. thanks for the advice and offer. once it's back on the road i think i will try out Boxgrove. cheers
  21. now i feel silly........ the 'big brother' check caught me out........thought i cancelled the 1st reply and now you have 2 or is this the 3rd.
  22. thanks for all the welcomes yep....the 90 is standard apart from the bfg at's and the side steps. right or wrong i assumed that land rover built the best standard off roader. has'nt let me down so far, been close tho! the picture was taken at woodlands. i hear that boxgrove and slindon and a worthwhile challenge? but that is my very limited experience talking. can you recommend anywhere in west kent / sussex? cheers bm52
  23. hi thanks for the welcome. i made up my mind some time ago that any Defender would go almost anywhere [within reason] as a standard vehicle. afterall, i assume that's what they were designed to do! apart from the side steps and bfg at's it is standard. have'nt got stuck yet [famous last words] but been close to it tho! cheers bm53
  24. hi, this is my first question to this forum..... my 90 is running on original props [pretty certain!] 2 of the UJs feel like they are on the way out and it is missing one of the nipples on the rear sliding joint. it has just started to give a vibration at approx 40ish and when the drive is taken up it has started to make a horrible noise........ assuming the props are really old and i want to keep the 90 for a long time in thought i would get 2 new ones. the question is do you recommend: 1. Britpart from Paddocks or similar 2. Bearmach? 3. GKN originals at the moment i am leaning towards Bearmach, from memory they are about £105 and £125. you recommendations would be most appreciated. cheers. bm52
