Hi all, I'm in the market to purchase a lockable cubby box for our 1988 Defender 90 to fit between the two front seats. I wanted to check with the group to see if anyone had purchased a lockable cubby box and was really happy with it. Thank you! Craig

got it, thank you for that @FridgeFreezer, sounds like a good mod to make

thank you @steve b, I'll clean out the drums as well

so true @simonpelly. I was really happy to see that the breather was clogged, and hoping that was indeed the issue. I'll take a look at the front axel breather tonight.
-
per @steve b's comment, I checked the breather and it was clogged. So I opened up the breather again and took it for a test drive and so far so good, leaks seems to have gone away. So looks like it was axel fluid after all. I also checked the oil level in the differential and it is still good. Thank you all again for the guidance on this.

Hi all, we came back home after being away for a week. I saw a little trail of what I'm assuming is brake fluid coming from the drivers side rear wheel. It feels a little more oily than brake fluid typically does, but it looks like it is coming from the brake line. I wanted to ask the group what I might need to replace to stop this leak from occurring. Thank you as always for the thoughts and advice.

no problem @Sigi_H, and thank you all, I'm truly grateful for all of the incredibly helpful responses here. I know I would not be able to manage keeping this Defender running without this resource. 🙏

I'm not perfect, wish I was...

I took the cap off of the master cylinder and saw that it was nearly empty. I bled the system with new brake fluid, and it is working much better now. Doesn't look like there is a leak at the slave, but possible a small leak at the master. I think for now I'll just ensure that it remains topped off until it gets worse...

thank you all. And to your points, I do now see a little bit of fluid on the clutch arm.

Hello all, I searched through the forum but couldn't quite find an answer to this particular problem. We have a 1988 LHD LR Defender. It's been driving great but recently have had a small issue come up with the clutch. The clutch engages a little too quickly in the travel from being pressed down all the way. So for example you put the clutch in, put the truck into 1st gear, once you start releasing the clutch say even a few millimeters, it will engage the drive. Hence there is very little freeplay. There is a fair amount of freeplay from fully out to when it starts to engage the clutch is more than halfway down. Is there a diagram or video that might show me how to adjust the clutch? Hopefully I'm explaining this ok.

Hello all, we have a 1988 LHD Defender 90. We would like to convert the hard top into a soft top. We would also like to switch to half doors for the sides and rear of the truck. Could you please recommend all that we would need with respect to a full soft top with windows (or a bikini top if needed), half doors, roll cage and other parts we may need to make the switch from hard top to soft top? I did do a search on the forum for soft-top conversions and did find some posts but not any that address switching to half-doors along with a soft top. Thank you in advance for any guidance or help!

Got it, thanks again @Mossberg as I sent my first reply before I saw your last one. Good idea to give the engine and tranny a good cleaning to help identify where the leak is coming from.
-
thank you @Mossberg 🙏! I've never even heard of wading plugs before. I'm guessing those unplugged holes are not the source of the oil leak too?

Hello, I was under our Defender today (I seem to be there a lot lately). I noticed some threaded holes that were devoid of what looks like should be bolts in there. One is at the bottom front of the engine just behind the pulley, and the second is near the front of the transmission and the third and forth and near the back of the transmission. I also have a pretty decent oil leak that seems to be coming from the oil pan and somewhere around the transmission. If someone has any thoughts if these holes should actually contain bolts, and by chance any thought on how best to mitigate the oil leaking would be really appreciated. Kind of hoping it might be as simple as a new oil pan gasket.

thank you for all of the thoughts on this. I will look to see if I can find a cowl and then reinstall the fan

The brass expansion tank suggests it was originally a 2.5 N/A or turbo or an early 200 Tdi. Hence the short bellhousing and engine back against the BH. Is reverse up and left?
Steve
@steve b yes, reverse is left and then up

thank you @fmmv!
@Peaklander I agree, the engine does seem to sit way back in the bay. The gearshifter does appear to be in the original position and I took a photo of the underside of the truck in case that helps as well

The fan is now removed. Luckily I had a slim 32mm wrench still lying around that I had used to tighten a bicycle head set about 35 years ago... (posting a pic of the wrench in case in helps out someone else). Thank you all again for your help!

any advice on how to actually get the fan off would be very much appreciated, as all I'm seeing is what looks like a coiled spring and a retainer on the front

thank you @fmmv, I did not know it was reverse thread 🙏

@Peaklander I really like it. Was is it a whole aftermarket kit (the switches/gauges/etc) or did you just piece it together?
