  1. Mines in dry dock for a while , Preparation for the Three Peaks . So maybee tempting fate to use it a week before ??

So pull your finger out lardy

Aye, So's mine (well of a sort other than the J33p event which the Mr's is doing with me) So were gona give it a go in pikey's disco if he pull's his finger out.

  2. Manual of some kind, no contest. I run ARB's and they are great. If you put auto lockers in the first time you get in a sticky situation with a side slope, camber or a tight section through tree's on greasy ground you'll regret it. I spose it depends what your doing with them. If its just the odd occasion you need to cross a field or something the auto locking units might be O.K. but anything more serious go for something you can control. Ive seen many people making a bit of a tricky section a disaster because their auto lockers send em off in the wrong direction. With a manual unit its just a flick of a switch and your truck behaves like its on open diffs!

  3. Hope it all went well. Just spoke to Jase on the phone. sounds like him and Lard had a successful day with another first. Not sure of the rest of the results but im sure someone will be along soon to fill you all in. Well done guys.

Really gutted we missed it, We'll be back to join you soon guys, James' are some of my favourte challenge's. Things have been a bit busy lately but hopefully with the TFC out the way we'll be seeing you for most events. Just need a new Nav' as mine gona be grounded for a while!!!!!

  4. I had one courtesy of BT which was very good until it died :( but I can't remember the make. Now I have a shiney snap-on one which is better and comes with a little blow torch fitting and other tips that I don't know how to use ;) works really well too and solders big fat wires outside in the wind and cold.

    Mo

Im pretty sure that snap on do their own version plus they sell the portasol!

  5. We have these at work, variously known as PortaSol and Weller something or other, brilliant little things - the hot air attachment is ideal for heat-shrink, the knife attachment works well and with no tip on it it makes a damn hot blowlamp!

    12-20600.jpg

RS, Maplins, CPC et al sell them.

Yep, What he said!!!!!! I use a portasol most days, Brilliant bit of kit!

  6. Well were back, and what an amazing event. Brilliant long, technical but very drivable sections. A big thankyou to all the organizers and marshalls.

Lost quite a bit of time through small brekdowns, worst of all being loosing the front winch for 2 hours on sat meaning we couldn't do anything then it packing in again on sunday morning but nothing any more serious than that. Think im right in saying all four of us enjoyed it and cant wait till next year. Maybe we can get another team from the Bristol area to make the trip north as it is more than worth it, What you recon Jase!!!!!!!

If anyone has any Pic's then lets see em as we didn't really get chance to take any.

Best start preparing for the 3 peaks now, If its half as good as the Tay was I cant wait!!!!

  7. Niceone!

I got as far as associating you with the Wurzels (not too difficult I have to admit  ) but was struggling to get a catchy name when mixing it with "Sheep" "Velcro" and "Wellies":lol:

    PMSL! :D:lol:

Nice to know we have a name now. CAn we have team T shirts? and maybe a nice little pink strappy top for Lardy??

  8. Can any of you chaps post a break down of what is needed for hydro assist stearing as i'd like to try it on my d-lander as i'm going to be running 37" tyres and think it would be of benefit :)

Yep, will sort some pic's and post somit as soon as I have more than 5 mins!

  9. Ive delt wit them a fair bit now and to be honnest had no trouble's. The first set of bead locks I had were sent direct from the laser cutter, I was in a hurry for them and Tim did this to try and speed the process up but they sent the wrong size (even tho the right size was on the paperwork which was enclosed with it) which couldn't be help'd, just one of those mistakes that everyone makes from time to time and in no way was Tims fault. Other than that everything has been fine and Tim has always been helpfull and real tidy. Ive had a lot lot worse service from bigger and supposedly better company's!

  10. Tony, Where do you get ET's from for £138+vat? I just bought 5 new one's that cost me a bit more than that but sold them on as they were so small compared to the Fadima's ive been using.

I wanted to get 3 new fedimas to go with my unused spare then use one of the old one's as a spare but just cant find them. Transglobal have been saying they are on their way since Feburary when I wanted them for the muddy truckers now I was hoping to get some before the Tay forest challenge next month and it dont look like thay are coming! King basically said they cant get them any more, 4x4's R us said they wont do them any more coz they are impossible to get. Been having a right nightmare, I think I must have rang everywhere in the U.K. trying to find them and everyone says the same, none availabe, no idea when they will be or even if they will ever get any more! Its a shame coz they are a good tyre, They do wear a bit faster than symex and probably dont grip quite so well on rock but they drive fine on road, Offer a decent amount of clearance advantage over the simex, The sidealls stand up to a lot more punishment, and they grip every bit as well in the soft stuff.

There's nothing else really I like the look of in the 35 inch range except Boggers which I think I will go for but they measure undersize like the simex.

  11. Steering all done, Ram mounted in the same position as Pauls. Been out for a quick try in it and its brilliant, Being able to steer the landrover is quite amazing. Only one problem is that the rocking through the Drag link (as Paul has already mentioned) is causing the lock nuts on the track rod ends to come loose! need to find some way of stopping this happen!!!!! Paul, have you experienced any problem like this?? If so, Any idea's how to sort it??

  12. Paul, Where did you route the hose's for the ram? Having trouble finding a route that clears everything and doesnt cause problems with suspension movement! Dont spose you have any photo's of the hose routing?

    Cheers.

    Steve.

  13. Steve, the ram assist has been faultless. The drag ling does thrash around when changing direction and has caused a few comments

but but is not a problem. On the truck I am not building I plan to locate the ram end ball joint on the centre line of the drag link.

Spot, I could wear a nappy on my head and grow a straggly beard but I chose not to. holyness.gif

BEEN TRYING TO FIND A WAY OF MOUNTING IT ON THE CENTRE LINE OF THE LINK BUT ON MINE IT HAS TO STAND ABOUT 1-1 1/2 INCHS ABOVE TO AVOID THE PANHARD ROD MOUNTING ON THE AXLE WHEN THE AXLE IS AT THE TOP OF ITS TRAVEL. (Sorry, accidently hit caps lock) Just taken the springs out so I can move the suspension and try and find a way round it!

  14. Paul, Seing as you have been running the hydro assist system for a while now have you had any problems? Any clearance issues? (other than the oil filter at Taunton) Does it clear the Panhard rod O.K. as the suspension drop's? did you find any problems caused by the drag link rocking when changing direction? Just in the process of fitting mine now, ZF 74 pump in place, Steering box should be on tomorrow afternoon but the problem I have is I have made a few different sets of ram brackets and really cant decide where to mount it. kinda like the way you have yours, its well protected and just about the best solution I can see. Any feedback would be great.

    Cheers.

    Steve.

  15. A brilliant weekend (even with the rain), Enjoyed every minute. It was nice to have a slower more relaxed pace and such a friendly atmosphere, everyone just seemed to be concentrating on having a good day. It was also nice to have a few different things to keep us entertained in the evening and although they meant we had to put off starting the beer drinking for a few hours in the evening it was well worth it. Everyone had a smile on their face even when trying to make sense of the tulip diagrams!!!

Thanks to everyone that helped in the huge task of putting the event on. Will be back for next year. Lets hope its just as enjoyable.

Only bad point was being subjected to James exposing himself to Craig, It was not nice and I think I may suffer from nightmares for quite some time!

  16. My mate has Diahatsu 2.8 with its own pump running LR90 PAS box. It really struggles. He has now bought a ZF hiigh capacity pump and a hydo-assist kit to see if he can get any steering back (36" tyres!)

Not 100% right there! Its actually a LR pump thats had a bracket made to fit it to the Diahatsu block. The main problem with it is the pulley on the crank was for a 10.5mm wide belt and the pulley on the pump was for a 13mm wide belt so a 10.5 belt was running on the bottom of the pump pulley rather than the sides of the V and will slip when trying to drive the pump. If its no better with the new matched pair of pulleys (assuming he's now got the right belt for it as when we put it on we only had a 9.5 wide, Doh!!!!) then I'll say the pump or box is at fault. But even with the best L/R power steering they struggle with large tyre's and extra offset, Roll on Hydro assist!

But to answer the original question, Try and check the flow rate and max PSI of the replacement pump and if its somewhere close to the original fit it, If its a mile out try and sort something else. The flow rate has to be atleast as much as original but too much wont be a problem, Max P.S.I wants to be close, too little and you'll have heavy steering but too much and you'll be risking blowing seals in your steering box. Pulley size to keep the pump speed right at tickover (and avoid lazy steering at low speed) might be a consideration but they aint usually too far out.
