  1. Got the zf74 pump today. Not realy sure how its gona fit to the 200 TDi (disco engine). Because the discovery engine has a double pulley on the P.A.S pump which a belt is then piggy backed off to run the alternator, If I try and mount it in the original pump possition then im gona have to machine a long adaptor to get the double pulley in the right place. This in its self is not a problem but the issue I have with it is overloading the bearings in the pump with the extra leverage gained by extra offset on the pulley. The other option I was thinking about was to remove the pressure valve from the original pump and leave it in place with a length of pipe connecting the input and output just to circulate enough oil to keep it lubed. that way it just acts as an idler. Then I can mount the P.A.S pump next to the second alternator which is on the Air con comp' mounting. Only problem with this I see is the pump will then be at the same height as the resevoir and might not have enough oil supply. Plus I really dont like over complicating the truck as it just tends to be more to go wrong!

Has anybody here mounted a ZF74 on a Disco 200Tdi or have any other ideas???

    Cheers.

    Steve.

  2. Just about to re con and drill and tap extra ports on a steering box for my Hydro assist steering on the 90. I have two box's, one is a 6 bolt of an 1988 L/R 90 and the other 4 bolt off a 1995 discovery. Which one should I use? Is there any difference strength and reliability wise? or does it not make a lot of difference?

    Thanks.

    Steve.

  3. Anyone know of a more powerful replacement power steering pump than the one on my V8 serpentine ???

Bolt on would be good

    Cheque book waiting

Not sure what your V8 one is but the best I could find (and have just bought) was the ZF74 that everyone talks about. Its 120Bar max pressure and 12.5 ltrs/min max flow rate. Alfred Murray stock them and post them next day delivery with your choice of pulley!

People told me to search breakers for BMW/Merc ZF pump but when I spoke to the company that supply us with and repair P.A.S. pumps their Tech dept' said be carefull, 90% of ZF pumps use the same 2 casings and nothing that they put on cars even the german stuff has a flow rate of higher than 8ltrs/min (which could well be enough) but they arn't ZF74's they just look the same. They arnt even sure what the ZF74 is used for but dont think its a car!

  4. Looking to get hydro assist steering fitted to my 90. Don't have the time for lots of trial and error with looking for second hand rams etc to suit the application so I'm looking for something that is known to work, Wont take the vehicle off the road for long periods of time for fitting and will be reasonably compact and out of harms way.

Also an uprated P.A.S. pump may be a good idea but again I'm pretty keen on a straight replacement for the std unit (200TDi disco motor at the untill I find a suitable replacement with more power)

Anyone done anything like this or know of some info?

    Thanks.

    Steve

  5. Why not put an eyelet on the end of your acc' battery cable and bolt it onto a mini exhaust mounting like the one in the link below, Then simply take as many feeds off it as you want. The studs are 5/16 unf, Make a braket to put the stud on the opposite side through or simply bolt it through the body work somewhere. The rubber will insulate it. Commonly used in the trade for this sort of thing, Very common on H.G.V's and I think you will find one somewhere in the starter lead around the bulk head area on a range rover classic if I remember correctly. Simple, cheap and easy to get hold of!

    Mini exhaust mount

  6. For the TD5 just fit 10AS alarm unit and ECU on a TD5 loom. Decativate the alarm and immobiliser and you will just have an engine management system with normal key start. Both are reliable units. The 10AS unit can be replaced with a black box, but I don't see the point really. PM Ian, username PORNY, as he has done this a number of times and can also supply bespoke engine maps too.

There are two different type of throttle pedals that you have to match to ECU too.

A TD5 is going to work out a lot cheaper than a TGV, and will give a lot more performance than the TDi's.

    Cheers

    Steve

The extra units may be good but this is a challenge truck that I want to keep as basic as possible. These extra units may be reliable but how will they cope filled with water on a mountain somewhere. This is one of the reasons im thinking of TGV. The td5 will be a cheaper option but I wont be happy without carrying a fair few spare sensors and actuators so any extra "box's" id rather avoid.

At the moment im thinking of fitting the td5, stuffing the ECU in the roof of the truck cab (as long as I can make it as simple as possible) and carry spare throttle pedal, MAF meter, Fuel pump etc etc. I'm not afraid of vehicle electrics, Infact far from it as I run a garage that spends a large part of its time doing nothing other than engine management and chassis electric faults on systems a lot lot more complicated than a td5 but I also see many many stranded vehicles because of a tiny electrical fault which you really don't want in a deep gully, mile's from anywhere on an event.

Gearbox reliability is another concern but as I said earlier I really don't want to move the engine forward any coz I don't really have a whole lot of room and two I don't want to take any more weight off the rear axle. I'm not sure how much stronger the R380 is in the real world, Haven't seen too much trouble with either L/R bow if looked after.

  7. No need to move the 200Tdi forward to fit a R380, I've got this setup in my 110CSW the engine sits on the original 2.5TD mounts & the R380 connects using the original LT77 bell housing [the very short 11cm overall length one] & sits on the original LT77 chassis mounts. A 2.8TGV would most likely fit but present exhaust & turbo connection problems [similar to fitting a Discovery 200Tdi into a 90/110] & the Td5 would mean moving chassis mounts as it's a longer engine overall.

I'd fit a rebuilt 200Tdi [Turner Engineering] suitably tweaked & either leave the existing gearbox or fit the R380.

Didn't realise the LT77 bell housing would fit the R380. If you change to the short LT77 bell housing what do you do about the Mainshaft being too long? Is there a shorter version available to fit the R380?

Altering the engine mounts on the chassis would be no problem and I have a few inch's to play with which would be enough to accomodate the longer td5.

  8. I'd stick with the 200Tdi or swap in the 2.8TGv, the Td5 will not run without it's ECU, the unit injectors need the ecu to send them a electrical signal to operate at the correct time. I've never seen a standalone ecu for the Td5 engine.

LT77 will bolt up to the 200Tdi & TGV [as this engine is a updated 300Tdi] a LT77 could be made to fit a TD5 but the R380 is a much better gearbox [original fit on Td5 vehicles].

Thanks. I'm well aware that it needs an ecu, I'm just after a system that will run the injection without the anti theft etc. A bit like the systems they use when building race cars and that sort of stuff. I appreciate that the R380 is a better gear box but im not keen on moving the engine forward, I don't want to upset the weight bias as its a tray back and is a little front heavy as it stands plus the radiator and inter cooler have been moved back to allow the front winch and bumper to be tucked in giving a better approach angle so this too would have to be moved forward which I don't want to do.

  9. Thinking of an engine change from my 200 TDi to a td5 or a TGV. First question is will either the TGV or td5 bolt onto an Lt77? Secondly is there any form of stand alone engine management systems available for the td5 so I can run with the minimum of electronics and get rid of the need for the chipped keys/immobilizer etc etc?

  10. Ask Steve

Well the thing is we look after 2 landcruisers for customers and probably about 40 landrovers of different kinds from falmers to chelsea tractors.

I have only ever fitted C.V.s to 1 landrover which is my own very much abused tray back running 35 inch fedimas, lockers etc etc. Never ever fitted one to any of the customers landrovers, One discovery I can think of has had a noisey O/S/F for probably the last 3-4 years(I filled it with C.V. grease and it has never got any worse).

On the other hand the toyota landcruisers, Neither of which ever go off road and the lockers would never have been engaged, One does a bit of towing, nothing serious, have both had to have both C.V's replaced. The one has just had the one side done a second time at about 170,000 miles. And the cost of the C.V. will make you very very sad.

Im not a fan of anything in a landrover axle, Infact I think it's a load of s**t but the toyota C.V. aint much better, Infact they they seem to stand up to the school run and tesco shopping trip even worse that the landrover unit.

So who knows what the answer is! Ive got ashcroft, Pricey but as far as I remember the pair dont cost a huge amount more than one toyota C.V. and carry a 5 year warranty.

  11. Either a very good setup or a very poor one. I know someone who had a std 110 just with +2 shocks and "orange" +2 springs. The springs were so poor that they dislocated and jammed everything up everytime he went over anything more adventurous than a kerb! Eveytime he got on something a bit rough the weighted wheel would refuse to go up and the wheel on the opposite side would just drop of the end of a spring that never seemed to grow in length.

  12. Yep we are loading up wednesday night and leaving Yate at 0500hrs . Providing we get through Brum ok we should be at the Stockyard by 0930hrs.

In cab entertainment will be the Classic film Deliverence (squeel like a pig Lardy) :D

Lardy sure got a pretty mouth!!!!!!!!!!LOL!

Think were leaving Abergaveny at 8o'clock. Hopefully that way most the rush hour traffic around the midlands will be gone when we get there. Probably be at Dun's mid afternoon sometime with any luck. Where you guys staying, We still aint sorted anything! Probably end up in a tent, on the verge, outside a pub again!!!

  13. Right the plan is for those travelling up on thursday , There are a few of us meeting for breakfast at The Stockyard, Off Jct1 M18 Nr Doncaster between 9 and 10 .

Then a convoy up to Scotland.

What time you leaving Brizle Jase? We were thinking of trying to meet up but I reckon its a good 3 1/2 hours to Doncaster for us! You'll be there by lunch time at that rate!
