  1. Well, popped down to Harwich to see everyone off last night, I even borrowed my brothers digi camera to take some pic's, met up with petergg & mrs P......so we waited and chatted................

......then went and had a coffee whilst watching some canadian guys riding round on a penny farthing bike :blink: ..............

    22.15............mmmmmmmm wonder where they are................

......some time later......no one left in the entry lanes.......

.....hark is that a 4.6? they rolled in with 10mins to spare & we had to persuade the gate monkeys to let us have a quick hello to everyone as they were keen to get them in as the boat was loading  . Was good to meet even if brief. The 109 looked great ....the vapour archs fit the 900's perfectly :P .....Petal looked well like Petal really B)

Hope you all have a wild trip.

......Bet you're all thinking lets see some pic's then............errrrrr

......it seems I forgot to take the SD card....... ...they would have been great shots tho ,the convoy looked good Dan & mrs D's 2 door RRC looked a bit small between the 109 in front & Petal on a trailer.

    Cheers

  2. Hi , if you're running the pump off the engine it'll need to be chain drive.......although if your eng is a 4203? looks like it might be you may be able to run a pump off the timing chest....will be running all the time tho.

I haven't got any pic's of underneath-will try and get some up soon, theres not much to see ,all I did was use the end of the orig driveshaft with a uj onto pump shaft. the pump is mounted onto the n/s inner chassis rail with a nice 6mm thick bracket, with side webs.

The rest - pto/pump & valveblock is just bolt together. The PRV is set using inline pressure gauge & then locked.

    cheers

  3. my winch on my 109 is hydro converted fairey mech winch . LT 230 PTO pump 8.5 gal/min 1/2" port valve block 7gall tank (1" feed + filter to pump) 6.5 gpm reversible motor ( with leak off). the motor is off a series lr hydro winch. PRV set to 200bar. I had all the bits apart from valve block which cost me £200. Pulls well but the cable is too thick so it loses torque on the outer layers. Plasma sometime i reckon. B)

oh yeah and about £350 worth of new hp piping to plumb it up on 46 wt oil.

  4. Been talking winchs to lots of different people lately and some has told me of a H14 mech (i think) that wore out the worm & worm wheel -because it was filled in the gearcase with EP90- to the point where it self locked when powered in...might be worth a look inside ? you could also take the motor off the winch & run it up to see if it runs ok (rotationally , not under load obviously)?

.....I never realised phosphor-bronze could be attacked by ep 90......will be freeing off the drain on mine & looking for the right oil-mines a fairey mech winch powered hydraulically so if anyone knows the correct oil?

All pipes, master and slave have been replaced with genuine parts.

Hi check the m/c push rod for free play sounds like its not clearing the piston when released causing it to pump up to where you are now

  6. Hi All,

300TDI defender engine in a disco - later model before EDC - AFAIK

After successfully replacing tensioner, idler and crank with the timking belt kit i proceeded to fit the new belt .. Following numerous guides and manuals to set up the timing i got it on and felt it was aligned properly ..

First off it fired but was Lumpy as hell and smoking like a chimney .. so i assumed the fuel injection timing was out a tooth. Took the belt off and redid the whole proceedure to get the same results !

I am now soooo frustrated after trying to get the timing right over 9 times I need some help from the experienced among us !

    To summarise :-

I loosened the 3 pump sprocket bolts

    Align cam

    locked pump

    locked flywheel

all this seems to line up ok .. if anything the pump pin is tight once the belt is on but i thought this was just the pumps tendency to want to turn ... Also i locked for the pump locking pin (the one with the keeper plate which is behind the timing belt housing) and I dont seem to have one, could this be a problem ? maybe the injection timing needs resetting but i need the locking pin and keeper plate for this no ?

Also to add to the confusion when i did have started (timing was wrong though) it didnt want to shut off and i had to stall it to do so .. does this suggest a dodgy stop solenoid and can this contribute to the lumpy-ness or reluctance to start up ?

A lot of questions there i know .. someone please dive in a help !

    Hi TPK241,

    1. Is the crank key at 12o'clock when the crank is locked this iis where it should be

    2. cam wheel is a dot on outer face lines up with arrow on timing chest

    3. pump lock pin is 5/16 drill bitIIRC loosen 3 bolts

4.fit belt from crank to cam to pump to end up with all the slack over tensioner/idler

    5. tension/tighten up incl 3 pump bolts. remove pin(s) turn over twice on crank recheck

That should be it . You may well find something in the tech archive by Les or white90 too

  7. Very much the typical stuff on tv these days. . ............I reckon .tv will change the stranglehold the old familiars have on broadcasting. :) bring it on broadband tv........anyone bought offroad.tv yet?

  8. blimey Mark I heard you have had a suspension overhaul......but thats a rather extreme way to test it :blink:

Hope you and the landy are unshaken, any more pic's of the rest of the day? :o

    cheers

  9. Jason, so with the prop on is there clearance on the slider?

the angle of the diff is controlled by the suspension links. To check A frame balljoint use a pry bar between axle case mounting point and one of the m8 13mm head bolts to see if it will lift up & down( handbrake on vehicle on ground wheel chocked etc) any play means its worn out. check all the other susp bushes/ mounting points to see if anything looks wrong/worn using the pry bar. Seems to be back axle/suspension rather than t/box tho.

  10. Hi Jason , in your picture the rubber drive member looks very distorted for one recently replaced and also looks as though its under endthrust. is the rear prop slider joint free to move? not siezed or at the end of its travel?

If you take the rear prop off to check the slider i'd suggest a run up the road with ctr difflock in to see what change there is.This is ok to do as BM says just bear in mind you'll be in 2wd and there will be clunks from trans cos of slack in the boxs.

    cheers steveb

  11. Happy trails JPK

I hope you are going to keep us posted with stories from your trip as well as as any requests for help. B)

Are you travelling on your own or as part of a group? & what is your trip plan?......will you drive back to the UK?

enjoy the international Land Rover community. :)

I'm back off to work :(

  12. Hi is it 300TDi defender eng in a disco ?

smoke/steam from rocker cover immediately on start up suggests blown head gasket.. is it really a "knocking" or more of a banging? How's the water level (300tdi check header tank and at thermostat housing) .They usually idle still if head gasket is gone though.

........however metallic knocking & won't idle suggests cam belt may have slipped a tooth, when was cam belt last done?

the grinding noise you mentioned on the way back from sodders also suggests cam belt . with the rocker cover off did all the push rods look straight & all the valve stem caps in place?

some food for thought maybe :)

    cheers
