  1. I have to say over here it is common practice to use a tow ball for recovery, in fact on several occasions I've used one over a "recovery point" because I wasn't comfortable with the fabrication. The only time I've seen a ball fail there was a large selection of cross member still attached. I think in aus the gross weight of off road vehicles is considerably higher than Europe thus the failures.

  2. I used the hitch you mention for many years on the back of 45. It's a good compromise. The ball is replaceable however mine never wore or bent. I towed everything with mine from Sankeys to boat trailers with rather more than the towing limit (low speed manoeuvring). I never had any issues using it for recovery mind I do have mechanical sympathy. It's worth noting you can only tow Sankey's with a rotating ring and commercial rings don't fit. The only reason I don't still have one is both truck have a Dixon bate adjustable slider so I have two ball hitches on sliders and one NATO that can be put on either truck.

Finally they're good for touch parking  and I would happily have another.

I think I made 5 in total in the end (I've still got the mould).

  4. Curve ball not rugged as such but I've got a fairphone 3. I've dropped mine several times and I work in a boat yard with it in my pocket. The reason I bought it was a couldn't find a rugged phone I liked/could afford and every part is easily replaceable so if I break it I can fix it.

  5. Not that I'm aware of. The three bolt that was on our 110 looked to be original so 30 years and 150k miles. I changed it because the drop arm kept coming loose. The 6 bolt is supposed to be heavy duty and is a straight swap for the four bolt but again that's metric (off the shelf for a 200tdi) hoses so doesn't fit three bolt hoses.

  6. The last set I bought were bearmach I think, they were the rubber ones not the harder plastic type. They've lasted a whole two months. I thought at the time these fit well and are nice and flexible....clearly that didn't help either. I will get some gen ones a see how they compare.

  7. HD flanges are beyond my budget bearing in mind I have two trucks that would need doing. To add to the confusion it's a drum Salisbury, a disc converted Salisbury, a 10 spline front and a 24 spline front which makes ordering hard work.

I think I'll just get a pack of gen caps and just replace them as they split.
