Hi all,
I've just come about a 3.9 that has been stood for around two years.
Before it was taken out it was in good order and had all fluids drained.
Would you risk putting some oil in the sump and some ease it down the bores and turning it over by hand or would you strip it and have a look?
Cheers,
Mick.

Ah Ha, I have heard of this practice, but never seen it practised.
As I Understand It, they fit a Viscous Coupling to the centre differential, presumably sourced from late Range Rover Classics. This means they have permanent four wheel drive, but the centre differential isn't mechanically locked as it would be with a standard diff lock. Now when they apply the handbrake the rear propshaft is 'stopped', but by applying a lot of throttle the VC slips and thus the front wheels are powered. This technique enables the car to turn in a very tight radius. If you have seen front wheel drive cars on a driving test (manuouvering round cones, on a tarmac surface) you will have seen this technique displayed.
I don't know the life expectancy of the VC when thus abused.
HTH, David.
Thanks David.

Thanks very much Ralph.

The viscous handbrake is a new device, never mentioned in any workshop manual.
Who told you about it, or where did you read about it?
Guy I bought my CCV motor from mentioned that a lot of the lads were fitting them instead of the usual transmission brake, he said they were available on some R380 box's but at the time I didn't think to ask more than that.
-
Gent's,
Can somebody please tell me what the viscous handbrake is on a R380 box?
Is it just the normal park function or something else?
Thanks,
Mick.

As per tiltle please chaps,
Can anybody give me a link to where I can download a copy of the Blue Book please?
Searched the MSA site and google but can't find the book itself.
Mick.

Potentially will be a bit stronger, especially the diff, but the diff is on the other side of the car, so not necessarily a straightforward swap!
Also I believe that Disco 2 internals do not fit so you may struggle to upgrade them.
Ah...
Not having a P38 I didn't realise that.
cheers.

Hi all,
Quick question are the axles from a P38 4.6 any stronger than the ones from a RRC?
Thanks,
Mick.

True but once you've driven one you won't care!
Sell the wife / partner, kids, budgie or your spare body parts if you have to.
You could even walk 4 days a week (perish the thought)

a tdci painted rough camo?? original reg suposedly e reg?? which comes back as an unknown on dvla? reg on vehicle comes back as a 1988 2.5????? wake up. does it look legit to you???
Ehm,
Gaz you may have a point but why didn't you post the facts in your first post?
Most of us are sad but we don't sit here looking at trucks and checking them with the DVLA.

^^^^^ As Ralph has said.
If you KNOW it's bent contact the police and Ebay.
-
Anderzander,
Looks like 1" box frame, a base and some vinyl, I've never bought anything from Britpart but surely they can't get that wrong.
I can't do the upholstery but if you want I could weld up the frames, will be bloody heavy but I can guarantee they will not bend!

Not that bad a price really for 2 steering mogs with the rams, disc brakes looks like one of sfs kits though probably means the o/s/f shaft is a sfs one too.
DD is that a bad thing?
Was going to have a punt but know nothing about sfs.

Gordon,
I'm guessing you have a clip on ammeter capable of measuring DC, have you done the obvious and measured the battery drain with everything turned off?
Mick.

Do you own a brick?
I nearly posted that but didn't have the b@lls!
-
They are easy to remove, take the prop off then undo the big nut inside the flange.
-
Daft question but are you in the AA or similar?
AA guy got me out of a similar situation in the past.
-
Nope,
Searched my HD for .QCT files, nothing.
Having said that I hate Windows 7, wish I'd kept my old machine.
-
Happy to help.
If you need info on the best way to position the brackets give me a shout.
Phil
Yes please Sir (unless it's in your build thread which I will read tomorrow.)
Edit: Today
No wonder the wife hates Land Rovers (swap her for an oil filter, filters brand new and I'll pay postage)

Cheers Gent's,
Gives me an excuse to get the mig out (again)

Hi all,
Looking at buying a second truck, I'm missing my V8 (TD5 is good but not that good).
I've got my eye on a cheap 90 fitted with a N.A. 2.5, my question is do I need to mod the chassis to drop a V8 in or all they all the same?
Sorry if it's a stupid question but I've only modified RRC's before.
Thanks,
Mick.

2000 110 TD5, 38 year old driver' no convictions but 6 points with 4 years NCB...
Just short of £1000 fully comp (and yes I did ring around)
Apparently BB3 is a high risk area but come on, it's a bloody Land Rover not a Porche!
Edit: hadn't read the above link, bang goes young lads buying LR's because they are cheap to ensure,
