  1. Many thanks for your swift reply, I have seen the thread chasers before but prefer running a die nut down the threads, there is so much paint on the wheels and studs that the only sensible and safe route is a die, if used correctly it won't damage the threads just remove the carp covering/coating the threads. Goz
  2. Hi Guys, The previous owner of my disco painted the steel wheels in thick black paint, I'm wanting to fit alloys but first I'd like to to clean the studs by running a die down the threads but I'm not sure what thread it is, it's a Discovery 200TDI 1991, they look like a fairly fine pitched thread, I do hope someone can enlighten me. Many thanks in advance Goz
  3. HI Guys, Apoligies to the mods if this is in the wrong section, please feel free to redirect, spotted this on ebay, thought it might be of interest to someone. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130397177125&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fi.html%3F_nkw%3D130397177125%26_in_kw%3D1%26_ex_kw%3D%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_okw%3D130397177125%26_oexkw%3D%26_udlo%3D%26_udhi%3D%26_ftrt%3D901%26_ftrv%3D1%26_sabdlo%3D%26_sabdhi%3D%26_samilow%3D%26_samihi%3D%26_sadis%3D200%26_fpos%3DPostcode%26LH_SALE_CURRENCY%3D0%26_sop%3D12%26_dmd%3D1%26_ipg%3D50%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1 Goz

  5. Hi Guys, This may seem like a silly question but , How can you tell the 2 gearboxes apart, what are the differences to look for visually , and which engines do they match up with???, hope someone can assist, Regards Goz
  6. Many thanks to you both, most helpful, cleared up a bit of confusion on my part, have ordered a full set of pistons so hopefully should be rebuilding her soon. Goz
  7. HI Guys, Discovery 1991 200TDI Wondered if any one can advice me on this issue, I've removed the Pistons and cleaned the tops and they are STD Pistons with no ERR 1387 and (TX) stamped on the crowns, have these pistons been superseded by ERR 1390?, or am I whistling Dixie from a certain wrong Orifice, if any one could help with the correct no I'd be most grateful, thanks in advance. Goz
  8. Edited on 06/06/2009 Thanks for looking Guys, I've just found this post by Andy reference the same thing so have the info I was searching for. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=11960
  9. Hi guys, looking for some advice from those more knowledgeable than myself, I've a 1991 Discovery 200TDI which I've taken the head off (Head gasket gone between oil and water way), one of the pistons looks as if it's seen better days so thought I would investigate the possibility of replacing the pistons/rings and shells in situ (at this stage haven't got the sump off so haven't eyeballed the guts of the job), any advice would be most gratefully received, or help pics from some one who has done a similar job. Goz
  10. Stageonesimmo "Compressor for the ABS pump?" It's more likely to be the Flux Capacitor where it intersects with the anti matter facilitation valve, next to the ergonomic flatulence bypass flange Goz
  11. I'm really gutted for you John, I know from experience that the insurance company's can't compensate you for all the hard work and time you've put into your pride and joy, hope they give you a fair deal my friend. Goz
  12. Many thanks to all those that have helped me by replying to this thread, I have found all your advice most helpful and has certainly given me quite a few very good idea's, once again many thanks , now does anyone have a couple of old injectors from a 200 TDI which I could have, Goz
  13. That's one of the reasons why I've not started her up yet, I thought this might happen, I know that it is siezed in the head at the moment, but with the heat from start up thought it might loosen, but how many times do things like this work in youur favour, I don't want to ruin a good engine for the sake of a £20/30 headset. Do you think that it could be drilled out?? or maybe a long easiout, possibly grasping at straws here but really not wanting to take the head off yet as it would be a while before I can re assemble it all again.
  14. the average about 35-40 kgs each wheel and tyre
  15. could some one please advise me, is the starter motors on the 200 & 300 TDI's the same or not, can I take a starter from a 300 and fit it to my 200, I know someone who has a 300 starter and mine is u/s, so hoping they are interchangeable. Many thanks. Goz
  16. let the battery stand overnight and then check it, voltage should be 12.5 v or more ..if low battery suspect. With engine at 2-3000 rpm with everyting turned off check voltage at battery it should read 14.4-14.7v if below 14.4v faulty voltage regulator in the alternator. check all voltages going to starter solenoid if all is ok then easiest way to check the starter is to remove it and place it in a vice then attempt to turn the bendix on the starter it should rotate freely if not it might need lubrication and freeing off.
  17. Hi Guys. Hoping I might get some advice from some of the more experienced Guru's on here. I'll start by giving you Disco info: 1991 200TDI Manual, doesn't get driven as I'm going to renovate her. Couple of weeks ago went to start her up (which I do bi weekly) just to keep the engine in shape, the battery was flat, which is not unusual for the old girl, recharged the battery and connected, she was still turning over slowly so attached my battery booster pack to the battery (connected correctly), turned the key and while looking under the bonnet saw no 2 glow plug start to glow red then pop out of the threaded body of the glow plug (which is screwed into the head), I turned off the ignition disconnected the power pack and luckily had tools to hand & cut the main feed to the Relay (glow plug), by this time the wiring from terminal post to relay and relay to glow plugs had fried, I have made a new harness, purchased a new relay and a set of glow plugs. (What caused the problem at this stage I'm not sure, but think that the relay failed and had a major short on my hands) Whilst removing the old glow plug yesterday, the threaded body came out no problem but, the sleeved end that covers the heating element is still stuck down inside the head. Now to my question, has anyone had this before and removed the broken piece with out head removal, or will the head need to be removed to get it out, I don't want to damage the head or the pistons so what would be the result if I tried to start her what are the chances of it slipping into the cylinder????. Any and all advice would be most welcome. Goz
  18. Have you checked the starter motor?, it could well be either a siezed/very stiff starter bendix or a u/s solenoid, try connecting just the negative lead of jump leads (if you have) from battery negative to engine block to eliminate any earthing faults, hope this helps a wee bit. Goz
  19. try unbolting the master cylinder then pressing the brake peddle and see if the pedal is free, if the pedal moves ok, refit the master cylinder then in turn crack the brake pipes on the Master cylinder and see if there's any movement at the pedal, if no movement, then fault is Master cylinder/Servo, if there is movement then it is after the Master, Have you checked the pressure relief valve? Hope this is of some use to you. Goz
  20. sounds to me as if you may have either a faulty switch or faulty dim/dip relay, flash and main beam use the same wiring and fuses on the circuit, if you have flash then that's an easy check on bulbs and wiring, that leaves you 2 things to check, the relay or the switch, if you check the feeds from the switch to the relay you will be able to determine which is faulty. hope this helps in some way. Goz
  21. hi V8bobber, I find this link works for the downloads, it has disco 1 on Rave disc3 and Rave disc 2 has RRv8 so may be useful I have windows 2000 pro and have had no problem with any of the downloads (apart from microcat but that needs XP and Nero) http://green-oval.com/joomla/index.php?opt...3&Itemid=29 hope this helps, if not I've got the workshop manual at home which covers the 3.8 and could photo copy the section needed if you want, just pm your address details. Goz
  22. Thanks for the welcome Les and others, still trying to find my way about and how to upload pics but Ill get there and post some pics of her Landyship as soon as I can. Goz
  23. Hi Guys, As I've joined the asylum, thought I'd drop in to say High and to introduce myself, well it's only polite. I own a 1991 Discovery 200TDI, it's in quite a poor state but it's my intention to renovate her and take her back to her former glory, I live in Aberdeenshire and work part time in a local family run garage when they are really busy, I'm a Land Rover enthusiast and enjoy the technical side of Landy's, a friend mentioned this forum so thought I would check it out and sign up as a member. Well that's all for now guys & gals, hope you won't mind me dropping in from time to time and asking for advice or help, I've even been known to come up with the odd bright idea. Goz
