  1. Hello All, I'm about to get my chassis sand blasted and zinc coated, my preference is to take the engine/gearbox/transfer case out rather than getting it dipped too I've read in some of the threads that the gearbox is quite heavy, is it possible to lift the complete assemby off, bulkhead removed, lift the chassis off the disconnected drivetrain? Could I run into any balancing problems between the engine (V8) and gearbox? Can I use 2 lift points on the engine and one to the back of the transfer case? Also, my 110 is an 85 my, the rear xmember is welded on, no signs of bolt points anywhere, is this normal on that age of chassis. Any advice or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated before i go any further, I should mention that I don't have an engine hoist so I'm basically doing this with a tripod and chain hoist set-up. Cheers, Tracy
  2. Hello all, I've tried to figure this out for a while, which route is a better route to go, poly or oem? I'm sure they both have their pro's and con's. I'm of the belief that with LR history they may have designed their bushings both suspension and chassis for world wide (all climate) use, whereas polyurethane are more off-road specific and may not last as long. (bit of a dream maybe) Is it reasonable to mix them, OEM in some spots, etc? Since I have the truck at a point where access is pretty good (body stripped off!!) I had upgraded the suspension on my old jeep wrangler-great for off road, but sucked to and from work on the hardpack, I don't really want to go down that road again. Any views on this one way or the other would be greatly appreciated Thanks, T
  3. Ok. Ralph no more jokes about about streaky's 3 tonne girl, I wouldn't get under something that heavy, especially the rear end! You should see how they put the ear window togetther when they modified the body, not as bad as welding the engine to the frame, I think the guys in Saudi who worked on it started in Mussaffah! My big problem is the corrosion on the hardware, that will probably be the most expensive [art of my rebuild! Streaky, any ideas where I can get a truck cab rear window set up, 90 roof and a bonnet, trying to get rid of the Saudi mods! They have an Allmakes across the road from Gulfstars here! Are they alright to deal with? Ralph, thanks again for the p/n will see whatIcan come up, with! T
  4. This is the one I'm getting, I know it's a bit pricey but I'm only doing my rebuild once and it's the only thing avail. here (Actually getting it direct from the manf. 2nd link, it's considerably less) http://www.roverworld.com/roof_console_english.htm or http://www.4wdinteriors.com/roof_console.html They are made specific for the vehicle, their customer service via email is excellent! T
  5. Just jumping in with a question here, I have similar weeping on my diff as well, is there any way to check the breather (very sandy here), short of repalcing it? Does it harden and deteriorate with age? ok. it was 2 questions Thanks T
  6. Streaky, Thanks for the heads up, my gearbox is ok, i was just having a bit of a time trying to figure out all the differences and the on LR manual isn't the best reference, I do know some pople in Canada who might be interested, we're in the process of sorting out importing a whole whack of used/new spares into canada. T
  7. Thanks Ralph, I definitely won't go the Disco/RR axle route, will look into the brackets and other bits to do the conversion, the p#'s will help when i can get to the wreckers, or the great 130 spare parts bin, do you think Streaky would offer any assistance fitting his rear end if it was nicked Diesel_Jim your insight has been very helpful, and, humorous
  8. Streaky, thanks for the tip I'mhoping to make my way up three in a couple of weeks for a parts run, when I was removing the airbox, it pretty much just crumbled away, really bad Musaffah fbreglass repair, top quality work out there. You never know when they'll polish up the pole, but the beer is always cold! Built a carport over the truck so I could finish working on it in this heat. Looking forward to seeing your 130 at some point:) Somewhere along you guys lost me on the thread, now I've figured it outnow, I take it the rear diff on my vehicle isn't a salisbury axle (still learning, will figure that out in a couple of days when I have better access). Cheers Guys Tracy
  9. Jim & Jim, Thanks for the information, diesel j, great thread, looks like more work than I thought, I should've checked the tech archieve first. On that note would a rangie or disco have a salisbury rear diff? There are plenty here! The truck is in Abu Dhabi, where I'm currently working on it, I figure if the axles are coming off it might be worth swapping out! Jim A you're very right about shipping a rear diff to BC, probably cost more than I paid for the truck and kit! Cheers, Tracy
  10. As things progress with the teardown, i have another question for the guru's... There is no shortage of disco's and rangies over here, is it possible to take a rear axle with disc brakes from them and put it on my 110. Is the axle strong enough, will it fit, is there certain pn's to be aware of? Any thoughts from you out there would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tracy
  11. Thanks for the links, very helpful. Much appreciated
  12. I'm back onto my re-build and I have a question for you guru's, The previous owner had the 4 spd replaced with a 5 spd, now my question is how do I tell the difference other than shifting patterns I've pulled the pn's off and I can't seem to find the complete assembly or serial # anywhere...Is there a specific place it should be? I know this sounds pretty bad but it is my first Land Rover and I'm attempting a complete rebuild from the ground up and this seems like a "small" detail worth knowing Thanks Tracy
  13. Thanks for the info regarding the oe bushes, will order some in.
  14. Since you are on this topic, I need to replace mine as well, any recommendations as to the type and quality of bushings to use? LR original, polybush, etc. Your feedback/wisdom will be greatly appreciated, it will be somewhat easier to do now with the body off, I'm considering doing a complete bushing change all around. Cheers, Tracy
  15. Congrats, and nice truck, good on you for looking into the safety around the car seat fitting. We must look after our little one's. As my South African friends say here "Lakka" I have a dbl cab with an old bench seat in it that is carp. Trying to find a newer style so my son will be safer and mor comfortable in the back, also need to fit shoulder straps, especially when we're offroading!
  16. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 3.9EF as well, What is a "Dizzy"? Tracy
  17. I think I'll take a pass on them , I'm sure we can be entertained by the person who does take them!
  18. Matt, Ralph, Thanks for the clarity, was more of a curiosity question as I'm very new to the LR world. T
  19. I'm having a problem with the vehicle losing power once shifted into 5th, will maintain approx. 100km/h. The previous owner of my truck had the 4spd removed and 5spd installed. He initially thought he had a gear mismatch between the transfer case and the rear diff. And didn't do anything about it. After checking out all the part numbers of the gearbox and rear diff (which are correct). A friend mentioned it that it could be my carb float set-up, possibly running too rich. I've tried the trial and error method and it has improved somewhat. The engine has less 3K since rebuild. The engine runs really smooth, so short of a tear down and clean-up then starting over I'm open to suggestions! Or am I on the wrong planet Thanks, Tracy
  20. Just out of curosity, is anyone using manual locking front hubs? Are they even available? Is it possible to reduce the wear and tear of every day driving on the the front diff? Or is it just air-lockers? Any thoughts on this?
  21. Yikes, you've shaved the National mascot of Canada I love it, I think you're onto something here, maybe the mascot for the 2010 winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC should be a shaved beaver With all the tree-hugging "beavers" in BC, it could be a new fashion trend, we may need some beauty consultants to verify the shaving, Jim, Mark you 2 in?
  22. I had heard/read that the 3.5 was actually an Oldsmobile design Please say it isn't so! They probably died when they saw the dual carb install! Tracy
  23. Thanks guys, Will keep plugging along with what I have, and continue with the photos as I go along! Ciao, T
