  1. ui changed my barrels earlyer int he year, super eay to do and you cvant get a set of fleebay dirt cheap.

makes it easyer to do if you drill a small hole in the bracketry that holds your window mechanism so you can get a screwdriver on to the inside of the lock easier

  2. Hi all

am thinking of rebuilding my 300tdi engine

im more than competant to do it.

i was just wondering what people know about this job, is it easy?, any hidden horrible sections that could screw me over?.

and finally does anyone know what parts i would definately need to buy before starting?

    i.e gaskets and such like?

Id be hoping to get it out rebuilt and back in in 1 weekend as i rely on the vehicle

    thanks tom.

  3. I want a canopy for my 90 pickup.

I like both the ifor Williams canopy and the soft one with sticks.

What are the pros and cons of both and how does the ifor Williams ship?

Is it completely disassembled and packed safely enough to make the trip to the Bahamas?

How would the soft top hold up in the tropics?

    Thanks.

ive got an ifor williams hatrd top and its ace although rain does get in if its heavy, but you may not have that problem in the bahamas.

id imagine softtop would come folded up so much cheaper shipping than the ifor top which comes in one piece so very expensive shipping

  4. Hi all

Did a search for this on here but with no results so thought I'd start one

Am thinking of fitting a hid kit onto the defender maybe the one from www.hids4u.co.uk

I've tried to find out about the legalities of it as I don't have self levelling lights or headlight washers and from what I can tell all I need is self levelling lights

These I can't find anywhere so I asked my parents both very well experienced coppers and hey said they would have a clue about the hid law they would just think the lights were set a lil high if I came along dazzling

Just wondering what people know on this subject

  5. my 1/2 is 275 miles and 1/4 at 410 miles

if my reserve light comes on i can get 66 litres in the tank back to brimmed. Now i'm not really sure how big my tank is, or should be. I think they are 89 litres? So my reserve is 89 - 66 = 23 litres which seems a lot.

    410!!!!!!!

do you have a super fuel tank or an amazingly efficient truck.

the most i get is 300 on a good day with poncy road tyres and mines a truckcab so light too :)

O yeh thats 300 to stoped in the hardshoulder BTW

  6. 300TDI airlocks are the bain of my existance

fought with my engine since january when it froze up and blew the p gasket.

since then have changed the head gasket, replaced the heater, the water pump, radiator, and various pipes but luckily is working perfect now :D

by the sounds of it you have a small airlock somewhere, probably in the heater. i found the best way to gget rid of this airlock is to remove the heater pipe that goes vertically into the head at one end when the engine is running but not too hot,the water should come up out of the head, stick ur thumb over the hole then hold the pipe up in the air, your airlock should come out then lots of water, now quickly get the pipe back onto the head. (dont forget the pipe clip though or youll be taking it off again.

always do this as the last bit of bleed as its the highest up so most of the time the airlock gets stuck here.

  7. Recently my dads Disco 1 has completely coped it and i have decided not to bother trying to fix it this time as there is so much wrong.

So popped into my head the idea on ABS hmmm that'd b nice in the winter i thought.

So was wondering what people know on an idea like this.

i was thinking that i could unbolt all his hubs from the axles fully rebuild them then do a straight swap for mine, fit new brake pipes going to his abs module, plug in the controller and thatd b all that is too it.

or is it alot more complex?

    does anybody know?

  8. Hi

I was wondering where I could get informetion of legal to access greenlanes in North North Wales so I can work up a few routes to do.

Also I'm hoping that i can do a nice full day of green laneing in North Wales at the end of September if anybody would like to join me.

  9. Decent heating into a Land Rover Defender.

The first step was to source a decent heater matrix as the landy one if naff.

Luckily I had an mgf sat there waiting for parts to be robbed :D

So I stiripped the whole air box out and took it into work, it looks like this: (ignore the arrow for now)

    1.jpg

I then looked at the Matrix compared to my old one and decided it wouldn’t fit, so onwards with trying to make this thing fit in.

The first thing I did was to cut off the unnessesary ducting from the front and bottom like this :

    2.jpg

Next I removed the old foot-vent control arm and sealed the flap closed using silicone sealant:

    3.jpg

Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of the next stage but basicly I made a piece of new ducting to make this new matrix connect up to the old hole in the bulkhead, but I looks something like this:

Im not very good act diagrams but it kinda gives a good idea.

I made this out of thin stainless steel and welded it all together :D

    5.jpg

Before siliconeing to bulkhead it is wise to change the temperature resistors marked as R on the first picture to uprated ones (about 30 quids on ebay but they will take the abuse of off roading better)

This was then siliconed onto the heater matrix box and then into the hole in the bulkhead.

Now obviously this doesn’t take up the space the old one did so I made a lil L bracket with a 90 degree twist on the long leg so that the back end of the box will be supported, this bolts onto an original bolt hole on the box and onto the lower mount for the washer bottle, on the wheel arch (this needs bottle needs to be relocated really but I couldn’t be bothered so just zip tied it to the L bracket for the heater.

The next stage is to make it actually work with the car so the old levers get ripped out of the dash YAYYYYY.

Now I fitted a mud dash with 3 controls in it but this is upto your preferences really.

    6.jpg

The first dial is fan speed control.

This is wired up pretty easy as I took the electric switch out of the mg with heater so it was just fix the wires back together according to colour and add an earth and ingnition swithched live.

The second control is temperature I havnt actually fitted the gubbins yet but know how to do it so I went and bought an electronic heater control valve from ford for a mk5 fiesta: (these are also in pumas, kas, and some transits.

    4.jpg

Now I picked the fiesta one as it has two ins and outs and a recirc.

Basically there are two valves in it one on the feed to matrix and one on the return. But when these are closed there is a recirculation line between them so if I turn the heat off I don’t stop the coolant flow in the engine as it just comes up the in and gets diverted straight into the return, cutting out the matrix all together.

To control this I have robbed the heat control switch out my mates fiesta, he might notice when it gets cold again TEE HEE HEE and a quick look at the wiring schematics in his Haynes manual should help me wire those together.

The Third Switch is purely for opening the foot flaps, as I have set it up so it permanently blows at the screen and optional to the feet.

For this I took another dial out of the MG as it is simply a lever connected through gear to a knob.

I had to make a new control wire for this as its longer than the old one and the only place I could find that made custom control wires was in America. I did this by using a thin stainless steel TIG feed wire rod and a piece of bike brake outer cable. Simples

End results is lovely heat all year round no matter how cold it is, also it heats up a lot quicker than the original one as is newer and better design and it gets hotter because its designed for a convertible car.
