  1. Hi all

Been having a catastrophic time lately with the front end of my engine luckily all sorted now except the belt tensioner

Basically the stud and nut that holds the serpentine belt tensioner to the housing behind it has pulled the threads out of the said housing and am scared its going to fall off any minute

Have searched everywhere but can't find the thread size written anywhere as I need to buy a heli-coil kit and get a thread back in urgently

I think it's about 10mm but want to be sure before I take of as I don't think it will go back on once it's off untill rethreaded

Thanks in advance I hope someone can help

    Tom

  2. hmm good adive guys

it is a factory fit 300tdi

oil was topped up immediately but i would say the noise is slowly getting worse, although that could well be my overactive defender hypercondriac mind kicking in lol

ive got some landrover mechanic friends, so am going to get them to have a look tomorrow for me

does anybody know a rough cost from a crankshaft regrind?

also if it came to getting a regrind can i get the crank out with the engine in place?

    thanks again

    tom

  3. hi all

unfortunately my oil got a bit low, seems the warning light doesnt work and i now think i have a bit of big end bearing failure :(

gonna check it out tonight after work to try and diagnose where the noises are coming from.

my question of the day is: how easy is it to change the big end bearings?

and more to the point can i do the job from the bottom of the engine? i.e remove the oil sump and go at it with the small quantity of oil left in my engine dripping into my eyes?

id like to go at it this way as only did a full top end rebuild in november and dont fancy doing it all again.

will attach a sound clip of tyhe noise later this evening

    thanks tom

  4. i would suggest a badly matched sender to guage, they must both be designed for each other.

if not this then try replacing the cable as it may have too much resistance or too little if there should be an extra resistor in the circuit.

i changed my guages to td5 ones and had to find the correct sender to match the guages as there were two types apparently, then still had to replace the cable as it was producing too much resistance.

  5. I got em on mine and would agree with all the above

just out of interest what extra bits did you need to fit them ie, locks, striker plates hinges and the like.

people have talked about antiburst locks although i dont know the difference between these and normal locks :s

    thanks again

    tom

  6. Hi all

    Happy new year

I'm currently looking at putting a side exit exhaust on to my 300tdi truck but am not sure weather diesels need exhaust back pressure or not to run efficiently like petrols do.

It currently has no cat or backbox only the middle box which i was debating taking out to do the mods

    Thanks

    Tom

  7. Hi all am looking for some new tyres now as mine are knakred

Am looking about the 35 12.5 x 15 kind of size but am not really sure what to get

I do quite a few muddy roots and use my truck as a work horse in these conditions but also do a little but if rock crawling and some road use.

I like the sound and look of the kumho kl71s but these seem impossible to get hold of, i also looked at the maxxis creepy crawlers but also hard to get and apparently wear very quick, does any one have a favourite tyre to recommend,

I currently have insa turbos on but they are unbalanceable so would like some non remoulds although they have lasted almost 60,000 miles over 2.5 years :)

    Thanks tom

  8. wow loads of great advice :)

ive got a big list of things to check tonight now when i get away from work :)

incidently i have two friends that are mechanics at a landrover garage and no one there knew the proper way either, so its good to know this community is better prepared and more useful than and official garage lol

    thanks everyone

  9. Hi All

    i Have a 1997 300tdi 90

On my mot the other day i had an advisory for front wheel bearing so had a look and the play was fenominal so started stripping and found the hub nuts to be not even finger tight :o

so bought new bearing and seals fitted all and tightened up. A day or so later am getting high vibes and what seemed like a lack of power, it turned out i had tightened them a bit to much :( so replaced again but now the same kind of problem and its really annoying me am almost at spanner throwing time

The vibrations are mega like ive got a square wheel and come around 50MPH

am going to do it for the third time hopefully succesfully bt was wondering if anyone know what torque the bearings should be set at or is the problem possibly somewhere else maybe the uj in swivel housing? i just dont know :(

    Any help/advice would be amazing

    thanks in advance

    tom

  10. Hi All, ive finally given up and am going to but a new head for the truck.

ive been searching online for a good price and have found a no. of differing heads so now im not sure what would be best to get.

as far as i can tell a standard 300tdi head is code no. ERR5027COM which will cost about £340 for a complete jobby, but then i also found a 'new style' modified head which apparantly has better cooling code no LDF500180COM and this one only costs 10-15 quid more.

Im just looking for some advice as to what would be the better one to go for, is this modified cooling actually better? and would i be better getting a genuine parts head gasket or doesnt this matter?

    thanks in advance Tom

  11. Thanks for all the quick replys

But still no light and still confused :(

Basically I've tested the switch with multimeter and that works all fuses are fine the yellow relay in fuse box clicks so I assume that works and the pink relay behind binnacle clicks but I don't know what this ones for!

Also sidelights work but light up the main light bowls a little :s then on dipped setting only sidelights work

Where would I find the end of the cable to the lights so I can test if it's that?

    Thanks tom

  12. Ahh help please I was out in Wales the other night turned the truck off then when I started her again I had no headlights anymore

The sidelights work and I can flash full beam but nothing happens with dipped beam on or locking onto full beam

I've checked the fuses and bulbs both appear fine

I was just wondering if there is any other common failure points :(

    It's a 90 300tdi standard lights and switches
