  1. What are you using the battery for? 30amp cable is far to small really, go for a cable that can take double what you actually need.

It's also important to note that if you dont earth back to the main battery you need to take into account how good the earth is from the aux battery to chassis and then again from chassis to engine

  2. Hey,

A split charge draws more than you might expect from the alternator, would alternator do you have? Once you draw enough current off the alternator it's voltage will drop. If you are using a standard 65amp, then 13.4V sounds about right but once they are charged the voltage should go back up assuming your other electrics are off.

Also how big are your earths and how good are they? how is the aux battery earthed? this makes a huge difference.

On mine I have around 5 additional earths to meet what I need as I run a slightly complex set-up

  3. Hey, I reassembled the block/head yesterday.

I measured the piston protrusion and I found that a 2 hole gasket would have been fine, but to play it safe I put a 3 hole gasket on there. seemed no reason why a no-hole gasket was used, or to put one back on again.

I didn't check valve stand down, it didn't occur to me, shame as there seems to be no reference to it on this site other than what you just mentioned. I have turn it over by hand to do all the tappets and all seems fine in that respect.

  4. I agree completely, they are a terrible company, truely dreadful...unfortunately they are very very cheap!

I too just got a release bearing from them...also britpart, i only wanted the collar so thinking of using my old bearing and discarding the new one! definately shouldn't need to do that just because britpart have no idea how to make stuff!

  5. Yeah I'm not to sure as not seen the inside of one, I just assumed that removing material would make the compressed volume smaller and raise the compression, but perhaps it is neglible as the intake volume is also changed by the same neglible amount?

  6. Hey,

I have a discovery 200tdi engine that begun overheating but was otherwise running ok, so ran without the thermostat for a bit. (pump, thermostat and rad fine)

I am trying to get my head around the head gaskets. The gasket on the engine now is a no hole gasket, apparently the thickest one but neither the haynes or paddocks seem to know anything about them. I do not know who fitted this gasket either.

I have read the haynes about selection and it says to use piston protrusion to gauge whether you use a 1,2 or 3 hole gasket...so I intend to do it on that using feelers or dti, but what about if the head has been skimmed in the past, do I need to take that into account, to maintain compression?

  7. Adjusting the diaphram by only 90 degrees should be absolutely fine.

make sure you are methodical and mark the position before and after so you can set it back to how it was. When you do it, take it for a drive and make sure there are no clouds of black smoke, a slight haze is fine. Too much smoke can indeed damage things such as exhaust valves, rings, turbos as the egt climbs but that is the extreme case. Also MPG will not be effected noticeably as long as the smoke is kept down.

No problems among anyone I know :)

  8. Hey,

I am currently rebuilding my 200tdi disco in my defender (never sure which section to put in) and have every intention of raising the power once I am done.

I plan to fit a larger intercooler, can anyone recommend a nice large OEM intercooler that will fit nicely in the gap? I do not have the bonnet release equipment so there is ample room

Also are there any gains to made with different injectors and/or turbo as I could be tempted to change these, what are the options?

    Regards

    Adam
