  1. The surface ripples of the bucket are the Belgium national rally in the deep south and then tour the hot spots of Belgium, then into Holland to explore the flatter areas and then Germany, could be looking to move on after that and maybe look for a job in Poland so I can explore even further afield :)

Might have a browse of the tube tonight for the underground tours, I was 8 when Chernobyl blew up and I remember how it sparked enormous concerns thereafter for the safety of nuclear power generation, and shortly after that came the fall of the USSR, but in reality there are more dangerous things in this life than a nuclear reactor.

I want to get a wall map of the world and actually plot my destinations to see how many wonderful things I could see on my journey, I know the Wieliczka salt mine located in the south of Poland would be a stopping point for sure :) Could also take tea with my good friend Macziek when in the area ;)

  2. Hi,

Might be worth adding what type of LR you have to your signature to give a better idea.

    Griff

My bet is a D4 but could be wrong

Corroded earths will cause a voltage drop but the same effect can be induced by a burnt or corroded power feed, fuse or relay contacts.

If you happen to have a D1 200Tdi with those horrid fuzzy links then they were an enormous headache for many an owner :(

  3. Whats the obsession with tsjernobyl?

Funny I thought I was alone in wanting to go and see the aftermath of a nuclear meltdown

Who would have thought it such a potential holiday resort

Why do you spell it differently Daan?

Oh and I missed out the whole of Georgia too, that is one country I am pretty sure will see me robbed before breakfast unless I go armed :o It ain't such a big country but it ain't half got some interesting terrain in it from travelers tales. ;)

  4. The clearing out and sorting through is coming in a big way tomorrow as I draw an ever closer end to my project

Well sort of, all the major fab and welding repair stuff is done so that just leaves me some odds and sods like wiring and miscellaneous repairs to undertake, my work bench in the main shop has maybe a 12" square next the vice and the temporary table has next to nothing on the 10 foot square surface, so lots of stuff to put away but as much stuff to throw away too. A big space will be made when the winch is fitted in the bumper and the gearbox is re-homed on a pallet the rest is just an accumulation of bits and bobs where I have not always the time to actually dedicate to sorting it out.

I am envious of your workshop Dan, and especially the tooling you have at your disposal, makes life a lot easier when you have all the right gear to hand. Couldn't agree more on the need for good lighting and sockets too!!!

  5. After reading the reply by our very own Bill Van Snorkel, I not only burst out laughing and have continued to laugh about his post since reading it, but I have actually put some very serious thought into this.

Post #83 on page 5 of this topic http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=22800

Many of us are here because we have a commonality, Land Rover, but we each maintain and build up and modify our individual vehicles for some very different terrains and driving styles and conditions, some simply as their daily driver and tow boat, some for hard core competition, some for green laning and travelling in general whether it be a trip to Bala or surfing the dunes of Morocco or just for hauling a caravan around the countryside. I was building my Disco to go to the 2013 Land Rover National rally in the South of Belgium, kind of missed that date as it sailed by and my truck still in bits.

But my bucket is a shallow one and in no particular order before I die I want to go to.....

    Casablanca, Morocco.

    Moscow, Russia.

Chernobyl, Ukraine.(the site of the nuclear power station that destroyed itself)

I did say my bucket was shallow

Where do you want to go?

  6. think it would only be to keep the electronics of the auto box happy.

I thought about this topic quite a bit today but I am actually battling with my nostalgia on the subject.

My first Range Rover was 3.5 V8 when I was in my late teens and I will forever have an enormous fondness of that car and the fun I had in it, and pound for pound you can bet the Rover V8 is a great engine of it's time, but that is just it, times have changed and we now want more from our trucks in terms of get up and go but economy too, reliability is to me a separate issue as the higher the mods the less reliable they tend to be long term.

Buy a cheapy and rebuild it and spend €5/600 and you got an engine that will go well on and off road, won't wreck axles and CVs in a blip of the throttle but will happily climb around all day without issues, good cheap and readily fixed in the middle of a field.

Oh the joys of deep thought hey...

For me I want an engine I work on in the engine bay and still have skin on my knuckles, power enough but nothing too big and it has to be light, hence thinking 4 pot petrol, put it on gas and it will still be miles above a diesel in costs per kilometer.

  7. So bin the LT230... and bin the weak axles while you are at it :)

Agree the RV8 has a fair bit going for it being nuts and bolts to fit to a LR, for similar financial outlay you could end up with an engine that will do 300K before thinking about a rebuild, bullet proof gearbox, transfer case, 2WD option, and far stronger axles.

I suppose it depends if you have the time, inclination and capability to do a Jap conversion.

If you end up going that far you may as well run the whole thing :o

  8. About to begin the renewing of the relay system for the headlights on my 200Tdi.

I have been toying with two each side but wonder if in reality one for dipped and one for main to do both sides is enough? Relays are 30A rated but wonder if that is enough???

Still looking to do a fit and forget system as I don't want to keep going back but also want to keep it all neat and tidy too and just 2 relays on a nice bracket mounted on the inner wing near the battery tray would look better than two each side I think?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

  9. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Defender-90-110-/321289000431

this annoys me big time being sold without ID.

anyone work out what the number plates are on it? J695 KRL? - comes up as a green 92 tdi. would be interest to see if this appears on another landy.

I would be happy to go buy it and apply for a log book on the chassis ID and or bulkhead plate, if it is ground off then equally happy to call the cops :)

If someone here wants to go and have a butchers and shop a ringer then please do ;)

  10. Withe the window collapse that seems very reminiscent of the toothed plate popping off the spot welds in the mechanism, simple, drill out and weld with high amps with either mig or stick.

If you need I have a cruise control ECU in my spare room???

But you need to find it and be sure it has power supply and a good earth, I am guessing with open elements for a couple years the earthing contacts will be a tad corroded!!!

  11. I had been away from land rover for a couple of years but my first Disco back in the club wsx a 3.9 V8.

Why? Because it kicks the stuffing out of the diesels all day long, and as long as the pockets are deep enough they go loads better and I always found the V8 more driveable than the slow diesels on offer, rightly so they can all fly after tuning but the v8 was a rocket straight out the box.

    Would I have another?

Good god no, petrol 4cylinder engines today of 2ltr capacity can do loads better than an 8 just missing the sound track, but sorry to say I will never again be in a position to afford to run one.

  12. May this one be better than the last, happy new year!

Thanks to all that offered help and guidance, and I must say "yes you were right" to a couple of peeps who said I wouldn't get my truck finished  But I got a full twelve months and counting from today :P:P:P

    All the best

    Nigel.

  13. Which cruise control buttons? The ones on the steering wheel or the master button on the dash panel by your leftt knee?

If it is the steering wheel buttons then you need to A) be very careful and B) remove the steering wheel as it could be a related problem with the wiring from column to the wheel as it does seem odd that the SRS light is on as well, failing that you have to follow the vacuum pipes from the throttle linkage diaphragms to the small electric vacuum pump that normally lives in the bottom of the drivers side battery tray, the CC is inactive at anything less than 30mph(not sure of definitive but mine wouldn't come on at anything less than 30) so it is difficult to diagnose as you actually need to be in motion to see it working, but the pipes normally perish at the couplings and it is worth replacing it all as it is cheap enough, also remove the small vac pump and bench test it and clean out the exhaust too as if it is unused for a long time it gets dirty and bunged up.

Check engine light can be any sensor related problem but should have been diagnosed by the garage that tested it, so not sure there.

As far as relays go you can also try swapping them out with known good ones to see what difference is made, as it is not unknown for them to corrode internally if left redundant for a few years.

Where abouts are you? Maybe there is another forum mamber close by who might be able to help in person as electricals can be difficult to diagnose over the net ;)
