That 12G garage has actually really pushed me now!
I read how small his space is and in reality how little money he has invested in it, and it is a great place to work on a project.
Looking around that garage kind of made me realize how much junk I have but also how disorganized my garage is.
Looking through the thread linked has shown how easy it is to build it but it also demonstrates the need for high levels of self disciplin to keep it tidy and also to make places for things, storage is key looking at his place, if nothing has a place then you have nowhere to work.
Gonna have an almighty clear out this weekend I think, anything not used within the last 2yrs gets binned, think we all hoard too much junk for the "one day that will be useful" fund, and it costs us more in the long run in time hunting for other stuff or just not having the clear space to work easily.
Now off to fill the skip up.

I bow down to my insignifigance and buy genuine where possible unless I fancy something in particular.
Will check email now, maybe they did but I am sporadic at best checking my mail.
-
I did send an email to make them aware of this thread and asked them to come on board and be inqusitive of peoples experiences.
Could be that the thought of being bombarded with slagging off posts is not appealing?
-
Well now you mention it Les.You've been in my garage peeking have you !!
But if you drag your heels any longer Will Warne will have retired and beat you to the finish line
could make an exception for your truck though, it will one day be very amazing and that rip snorting 200Tdi will make light work of turning them 44" tyres

No way, cars should be like women virgins as far as modifications go!
I say this after seeing god knows how many F ups in doing some simple rust repairs on my Disco.
Stroll on if you think I would buy someone else's wreck on wheels.
-
Think the Froggats ones bolt on, do a search for froggats easy on panels.
Have a look in the members vehicles section for my project rusty and that will give you a good idea of what to expect when you start cutting!
K reg would make your truck 1993ish, have you still got the fusible linksunder the bonnet?
-
Is it possible to rebuild my leather seats onto the old cloth seat frames?
I ask as found two of the four motors are not working so would be better being manually operated I think?
Any ideas?
-
Sounds plausible but why not just make them bollt on and leavethe galv alone?
Got any pictures to share?

I wonder if anyone has enough money and would be prepared to do a full on independently assessed test to destruction of two new teflons from various suppliers bought at random around the UK and the genuine parts teflon purchased from any old main dealer?
Only then will there be real proof of fatal flaws.

Fitted a posh Terrafirma one, only because it matched my new shocks

German safety test every 2yrs after the first at 4yrs.
The TUV is quite strict and they do things like checking engine numbers too.
France and Belgium for sure use the COC system where a car has to obtain a manufacturers certificate of conformity in order to be tested and then registered, and yes they do like to check numbers off on cars too.
This system was devised to stop folk doing anything that could be dangerous to themselves or other road users.
Bit carp but there you go.

What do you need a low ratio for? The curb is barely 4" you know
What about competitors cars???
How many actually have a 2 speed transfer case these days???
Soft road, want anything more than that it has to be custom, end of an era and all that but gotta die some time as it will come to a point where there will be no SVA/IVA to enable custom/modded motors on the roads, already happened here in around 1980? Holland has now stopped engine swaps on anything newer than 1998, so yeah, slippery slope.

Not so much better myself either but that really made me laugh
:hysterical:

A lot of the guys over here are scared of getting their precious Defenders dirty let alone driving them hard enough to break something
:hysterical:
The select few I would call off roaders have had much the same as you only taring off the brake lines and gauging troughs in the road ways, now have 8 sets of balls to take over, hope we get a bulk discount

That be a Disco engine, maybe a retro fit if the 300 cooked itself?
-
I was looking at those about a week ago along with the boost, volts and oil guages, thought they were quite good value too. as comes with K type thermocouple.
Where you putting the thermocouple???

You answered a question there for le Sam, I was going to ask what wheels, but I know you build from elsewhere and you run a fairly standard setup really, not sure how well those swivels would last if you were running large offset with wide tyres!!!
Like a lot of things we all have to take responsibility for the ever decresing quality of our part supplies, but griping here and else where about it does not help, now sending back faulty and substandard parts is a ball ache but they need to know and physically see what the failures were and how they came to be, dash cams and video's taken during a trip where a failure occurs is hard evidence of what you were doing when it broke, and backs up the whole fit for purpose thing.
I too saw the video of the lads with the wheel bearing saga, again, too many grey areas of fitting for my liking to put it solely on the bearings.
How many people here can actually remember the name and what the guy looks like behind the counter of thier local main dealers??? I do, why? Because I buy stuff from them and not from Paddocks over the internet. Yes a genuine part can fail too, but it is far less likely to, but weighing up the costs of the parts is silly to think a few pounds saving over the amount of time it takes to do the jobs, my genuine seals for the timing case on my 200Tdi are €50, yes I can buy a full bottom end gasket set and have enough for fish and chips if I wanted but I don't want to be doing it again anytime soon, cheap parts = problems in the making.
I recently did a piece on using a speedi-sleeve to repair a leaking steering box, no, not as a cheap skate means of repair but as an attempt to solve a simple issue with the seal land being corroded and pitted, there are no other issues with the box apart from the seal land so worth my time to find a solution, and as there are steering boxes available reconditioned but with no warranty I am not wasting €350 on that nor jumping to €550 for a new one, again, calculated risks, my risk being my €35 repair doesn't work and next step is to try the hard chroming of the seal land, but only due to the seal land, others will try to do my repair technique on a knackered worn out box and see it fail, why, because they don't know enoungh to know the rest of their box is stuffed and think the cheap speedi-sleeve was carp because it didn't seal their box.

When I broke the 1998 V8 D1 it had genuine teflon coated swivels, now these swivels had done over 100,000 miles and only just starting to wear through the teflon coating, I have heard of some trucks doing less than 5,000 miles and it has worn throughon the aftermarket ones!!!
Hence my reasoning to want to re-chrome an original set.
I think if you have the patience required then the rubber swivel gaiters are worthwhile fitting or if you could buy aftermarket leather ones or make your own??? Then that is worth considering too.
Mr. Noisy, you are not alone in your experience with self destructing swivels of aftermarket variety, but it makes me wonder about cost effectiveness of D2 front axle swaps and moving away from the old swivel balls? Especially if reasonable condition ones get hard to come by? It works on DANA axles?

Bill how could you!!!!!
Go and wash your mouth out with soap this instant
:angry2:
Glad you are not into inventing new "tools" to put in your workshop Jeff or we really would be worried

Buy Genuine springs and Koni Heavy Track shocks, my opinin for what it is worth.
This is one of them subjects that is so hit and miss with aftermarket springs, you can fit BP cheapo specials and have no problems or you can fit terrafirma, OME, Bearmach etc, and have nothing but grief, you pays your money and all that.
From personal experience I have had no problems with any of the aftermarket stuff but know guys who have had endless prblems with trucks not sitting level or premature sagging with a heavily loaded truck on all brands of aftermarket springs.
Shocks again are a subject where searching google will bring such mixed results of "fantastic" to "worst carp I ever wasted money on".
Might pay to do some searches for any particular brand and type and then ask a more specific question based on that, often a general spring and shock question is not appealing, as in, a lot of people have gone round the houses so many times discussing, that the subject is no longer interesting.
I thought I had replied before with "genuine" but seems not
Is there a particular brand you are interested in???
-
From other people around me who own D2s they have all gone back to genuine ones as nothing lasts as well as them, seen 5 guys now go back to genuine after trying various aftermarket stuff, all of them have said that they should have gone genuine in the first place for the time and wasted money.
-
it does
Can anyone guess what that means
-
Is it me or in the top right picture in that link it looks like a steering box shaft????
-
The guys in the main dealers all run for the hills wben they see me walking through the doors, the young guy who usually gets stuck with me has learned more about a 200Tdi Discovery than he ever thought possible, but why? Simply because I cannot afford to be replacing parts frequently as even the carpest of carp is expensive here! NoI do not waste money, I buy what will fit and last, original parts did this long so half as much again is going to be more than twice the average of other suppliers pattern parts.
You pays your money and all that but I don't think you have any place to complain when they do not fit/last.
OEM "G" spec, altogether a whole interesting topic, I think it was Simon r who did the comparrisson on prop UJs and noted the best quality was LR and even the "G" spec things were not the same and made/branded by the same company GKN.

Is the answer to a few where reliability is a concern to have a set machined out of a billet and then chromed/coated to prevent corrosion?
Costs might be a bit steep but then again, fit and forget.
