  1. It's not as hard as it looks Coo. Just dont rush it. As soon as I saw the finishing line that was when I started making mistakes. Also make sure you have everything you need. Mines taken longer cos I have to keep waiting for parts to arrive that I didnt realise that I needed. Check your discs and think about changing them while its all apart. They are quite cheap.
  2. I was wondering about the shims. I've ordered a set of shims and a new clip but tbh I'm not sure there's going to be enough room for the shims. I take it there should be abit of end float on the shaft ?
  3. Not getting my hopes up yet Bowie. I need to see how bad the leak is from the ball to axle gasket. I'll take it all off as one assembly if I have to. Think I found the problem with the damaged half shaft. The circlip and shims were missing from the end of the shaft. I found the circlip rusted in pieces in the cap. Dont know what happened to the shims ?????
  4. Off topic but I've found the machine gun noise ! I've had the manifold off 3 times thinking it was a gasket problem. There's a rolled seem just below, ( 1.5" ) the manifold joint. No sign of soot or any of the usual signs and the pipe looks fine. I only found it by using strong soapy water on a cold exhaust and starting it up. COO I'd check here first. I'd put money on it if I had any . Sounds good now with her twin exit slashcut stainless exhaust . I was going to sell cos i need a lwb minibus but its going to be hard now
  5. I did think that but it was on a bottle jack so thought better of it
  6. Anybody on here know how to get one shot swivel grease INTO the swivel housing and not all over the OUTSIDE of the swivel housing Good job I bought lots
  7. Update. I'd put the hub seal onto the stub axle the wrong way around and it was stopping the hub from fully engaging on the stub axle. Realised my mistake by watching a Phil Sheridan vid on you tube
  8. Looks like its all gotta come back off . I've tightened the hub nuts up till its hard to turn the hub but theres stiill movement in the bearings. Got an oil drip from the ball to axle seal to . Dont know how. All new parts used except the hub ?
  9. Bit of a tip. I didnt have a pull scales so I used the wifes kitchen scales and measured the push instead
  10. Nice idea Boydie I am hoping not to be doing them that often tho ! Coo, just follow this or print it off http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=5601 BIG BIG thank you to white90 for this post. Tech archive will be my first stop for all queries from now on. Next job is sorting the lack of power. Got a machine gun noise coming from the offside manifold. No signs of leaks tho,( all gaskets changed ) and down on compression on 1 cylinder. Looks like head gasket.
  11. Forgot the seal Doh ! Not as much of a potch as trying to get the right amount of shims in the top pin tho . On the plus side I'm getting to know the workings of these swivel housing intimately
  12. I'll double check it all before fitting. Thanks. Anybody spot the deliberate mistake below ????
  13. Houston we have a problem . The bottom pivot bolts wont budge. I've managed to snap 5 torx bits and mangle one of the bolt heads. I removed the housing by removing the top swivel point and removing from the top first. Can I get away with this on refitting after changing the ball and bearings ???? I'm stuck otherwise.
  14. Doh ! Thanks Bowie. What about the scoring on the half shaft ? Looks as tho its been rattling around in the stub axle but inside the stub axle is ok ? Is there something else I need to replace ?
  15. Sorry for the delay guy's, been waiting for parts. Just started full strip down and I've come across a problem. I've removed the stub axle as I'm replacing it, ( It's mangled ) but there is a bearing, a seal and what looks like a brass nut on the back of the old one but not on the new one. All the haynes says is " take it to your dealer ! " Is this something I can do or do I need to take it to a garage to get done while looking sheepish ? Also alot of scoring on the half shaft but no sign from where ?
  16. Sounds like a plan Thanks Escape.
  17. Just noticed its dropping a corner when driving to. Put it onto offroad and it goes up fine and level but then when it comes back down it doesnt seem to know what level is ??
  18. Hi guy's. My p38 appears to be inebriated . When you switch off the engine the nearside rear drops lower than the rest of the car. Not in a leaking/losing air kinda way. The car is dropping to that height as if that is its default height. I know they are supposed to try and level themselves but mine has a dodgy spirit level.
  19. Thanks for all your help guys. Much appreciated. Not as bad as I first thought. Looking at around £150 off flee bay. And hey on the bright side I'll learn how to completely strip and rebuild the front assembly. Wish me luck !
  20. Yep. I've found the problem . it looks as tho the nuts had been put on with an air gun !!! The face of the nut had been ground away and the threads of the hub are absolutely mangled. They have been cross threaded at some point which is why I couldnt tell which way the thread was running. Looks as tho its off the road for a while while I source some parts. What is the threaded part of the hub called ? The swivel hub needs changing so- 1) swivel hub assembly 2) wheel bearings 3) (got discs and pads) 4) what ever that threaded part is called ? 5) new hub nuts can anyone think of anything else ?????
  21. Hi guy's. I've managed to get a box spanner but I cant budge these hub nuts. Mine looks as tho there are two nuts on top of each other? Are they reverse thread or something that I havnt noticed. Locking tabs are flattened but they just wont budge
  22. AH HA !!!!! Thats why I thought I hadn't noticed any wheel wobble or bearing problems. So If I can find a bloody socket big enough to get the bearing nut off then just check it all on reaseambly and it should all be ok ? Great, I've got 4 scouts with kit to take up a mountain and it would have been a struggle in the wifes vitara fatboy !! I guess the brake bracket needs to be re-attatched before adjusting then ???
  23. Now this one is !!! I've just taken my brake disc off to change a hub seal and the hub is sloping around on the swivel ball !!!!! I'm guessing its not supposed to do this !!! Whats up with it. I've got to take some scouts up the brecon beacons on friday and I cant have wobbly wheels !!!!!
  24. None of my posts are showing ????
  25. Always happy to listen to your advise Bowie . It is advise at the end of the day not gospel and its up to the reader to decide wether or not its good advise .
