  1. With regards switching the ignition live side with a relay, would this be suitable: http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/product.php/648/high-current-relays (Durite 4 pin, 12v 100amp relay) Thanks, Paul
  2. Thanks for the replies. Mad-Pete, that's probably the way to go. miketomcat - the one I linked to has two separate bottom circuits thus allowing a permanent live block of 6 fuses and a switched ignition live block of 6 fuses ianmayco68 - Thats the one that I started looking at (was thinking 2x 6 fuse boxes; one permanent live and 1 ignition switched) but the one I linked to would allow me to contain everything in one box. Can I tap into any ignition live to activate the relay? Cheers, Paul
  3. Hello all, Whilst I am refurbishing the 90 I am looking to install a tidy solution to additional wiring circuits, with regards fusing them. Some additions will be on permanent lives; interior LED lights, stereo, amplifier whilst others will require ignition switched lives; heated seats, heated windscreen, lightbar. I'd like a solution that leaves me some leeway for future additions and came across the Blue Sea ST Blade Split Bus Fuse Block: https://www.bluesea.com/products/5032/ST_Blade_Split_Bus_Fuse_Block This would allow 2 isolated groups of 6 fused circuits to be contained in one housing ie, 1 for permanent live and 1 for ignition switched lives, giving 12 in total. I would be looking at mounting it on the central bulkhead behind the passenger seat to allow easy access (my seats don't have removable bases). What would be my best option to feed it a suitable ignition live ie where should I tap into? Thoughts, ideas, criticisms? Thanks in advance, Paul
  4. Good afternoon all, Having recently re-painted the 90 & decided to remove the A-bar (and its big Roolights - Lightforce copies) & I quite fancy an LED light bar. Now, I can't afford Lazer or suchlike & during my hours of browsing the interweb at work I came across this: http://www.grp4x4.com/products/parts-accessories/accessories/defender-54-night-hawke-led-bar-kit.html However, I can't find any information, besides what's on their website, nor any real world reviews. The price would be at the top end of what I am willing to pay. The vanity in me likes the look & the lumen output seems huge. Has anyone had any dealings with GRP4x4 - good or bad - that they would care to share? I'm sure people will have opinions on light bars & I'd be interested to hear peoples pros and cons of them, especially if anyone has one of the aformentioned ones from GRP4x4. Over to you good folk. Thanks in advance, Paul
  5. Excellent - hopefully these will be out easily when I get back from work. Thanks for your replies Paddy & Red90 Paul
  6. Planning to fit the variable speed intermittent wash wipe upgrade / modification to my 90, following the useful information in these threads: https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/927-adding-intermittent-front-washwipe-to-older-9011/ https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/20391-variable-intermittent-wipers/ At the moment the wash / wipe stalk on my ex-military 90 appears to have: push the button on the end: washers spray & give 4 wipes of the screen up 1: slow up 2: fast If I press it down it does nothing at all, except returns to the off position - what is it supposed to do? Will I need to replace the stalk as part of the intermittent wash wipe upgrade? (I know I need the Autosparks loom & the relay) When the intermittent system is installed what position on the wash wipe stalk is intermittent supposed to be at? Is there a facility to just do a single 'one off' wipe? - this is what I thought pushing my stalk should be doing Ta, Paul
  7. Good morning, As per the title thread really. I have limited electrical / mechanical knowledge & have removed the screw on lenses & bulbs. How do I remove the lamp units from the wing panels? Any guidance or pictures would be gratefully received. I am at work for another week or so thus have no access to the vehicle presently. Cheers, Paul
  8. Excellent info thank you. I found BFGs UK site lacking in detail but didn't think to check with the US site. Lesson learnt! So, it seems that 16x7 will be OK. 16x8 would be good too. Many thanks to you all for helping me with this! Cheers, Paul
  9. Hi all, Many thanks for your replies. I didn't realise that the KM3 is due out soon. The BF Goodrich UK website doesn't list the 255/85/r16 as a size for it though. It seems my GoogleFu was weak yesterday - I've had a bit more success (Thanks DaveTurnbull for getting me going again). Paddocks do seem to have them as do Black Circles. What I was hoping for was a wheel and tyre package deal (I should have made that clear in my original post). My current steel wheels are rather tatty and I fancy a change from black 8 spokes (and a random steel disco wheel) to black modulars. I emailed Paddocks direct and they have quoted me the following: Hello , Please find below the price/s you requested for 255/85r16 BFG MT KM2 mud terrain tyre fitted on 16x7 Black Modular wheel including building + balancing, uk mainland delivery + vat. set of 4 x = £828.00 inc vat set of 5 x £1035.00 inc vat Regards Noel - Customer Advisor AEW Paddock Motors Ltd. What concerns me slightly is that if I utilise the wheel and tyre calculator website ( http://www.tyresizecalculator.com/tyre-wheel-calculators/tyre-size-for-rim-size-width-calculator ) it tells me that 16x7" rims are way too narrow for the 255/85/r16 BFGs. Or am I getting it wrong? Or are Paddocks getting it wrong? What is the general consensus here? I don't mind having to source the tyres and rims separately, I just don't want to be ordering the rims in the wrong width. As for offset....? It seems a minefield. Any further advice gratefully received. Cheers, Paul
  10. Hello again, I finally tracked down a photo of the Masai one and it sits very offset to the drivers side. It just looks wrong to my eyes. The design looks great but I just couldn't live with it in that position. I managed to track down a Mantec one at a very reasonable price so the choice is made! Thanks for all the replies, Paul
  11. Good morning all, For ages now I have had a set of the aforementioned tyres fitted to the 90 and the time is coming to replace them. Does anyone know whether this size is still made in the new style BFG Mud Terrain? I'm not having too much look in finding them and have always highly regarded them. Failing that, what size is closest to them and any recommendations? Thanks in advance, Paul
  12. Thanks for all your replies - I've been away with work & had no internet. I'm still waiting to hear from Masai regarding a photo taken from the rear square on. Further research needed I think but if anyone has any photos of their carrrier I'd love to see them. Cheers all, Paul
  13. Hello, I have an ex-military 90 and for years the spare wheel (255/85r16) has been mounted inside on the bulkhead between the seats and the rear tub. I'd like to free up the space inside and re-locate the spare wheel to the rear door. As my rear door is rotting it seems a good time to replace the door and invest in a swing away spare wheel carrier. What have you got and why? Do you have any photos? I don't buy on impulse & tend to research things before buying. Currently I am favouring the Masai extra heavy duty one as can be seen here: https://www.masai4x4.com/Large-Extra-Heavy-Duty-Chassis-Mounted-Spare-Wheel-Carrier-for-Land-Rover-Defender-p50047130 Has anyone else got one & if so how have you got on with it? I like the fact that the Masai has grease nipples. The Mantec ones seemed popular but I believe they are no longer available. The Nakatanenga is far too expensive. My only concern with the Masai one is one of aesthetics (I know, I know...); it appears to offset the wheel to the offside & Masai don't include a photo of one with a wheel fitted and the door closed. Does it look odd? I have emailed them to see if they can supply a photo but I haven't heard from them yet (long Easter weekend and all) I look forward to hearing you opinions and experiences. Thanks in advance, Paul
  14. Hi all, MOT time is looking for my ex military 90. I've used Steve Hill in the last and been pleased but certainly wasn't cheap. My circumstances have changed and I can't really afford to use him again. Has anyone any experience with Land Rover Services in Brislington? I've heard mixed reports and they have no website. I'm currently away with work so can't call them for a chat (work offshore). Can anyone offer any experiences or recommend an alternative? I'm based in SE Bristol. Is there a place out at Yatton? Help! Thanks in advance, Paul
  15. Evening all, I have an ex-mod 90 that I repainted successfully a good few years back. It needs doing again after the great British weather and many greenlaning and pay and play days have taken their toll. I'd like to do it early spring next year when the weather warms up sufficiently and I'll be sanding it down, removing glass etc and doing a good job. I hope. Last time I had access to a friends large, dry, secure garage however she has since moved on and I have moved to the South West (Bristol). I now have no garage, no drive (very busy on street parking) and don't know anyone with a garage. What is the etiquette (if there even is one!) for asking farms etc if I could 'rent' a barn or large covered space for a week or 2? Would you just turn up and ask? I am clearly not from the countryside (northern mining town origionally!) Does anyone reside in or near Bristol who might have some space I could use to sand and repaint? Any ideas or suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance PS - Mods: I posted this in the Defender forum earlier but thought it'd get a better response here as it's not a specific Defender query. Please feel free to remove if I've broken any rules.

  17. Excellent - 2 positives for the same place is great! Thank you very much
  18. Evening all, I have recently moved up to Bristol from Devon. Loving it so far but I am looking for a Land Rover Specialist to carry out servicing and repairs on my beloved Ex Military 300Tdi 90. I am based in the SE of the city and am looking for somewhere local. So, any fellow Bristolians - who can you wholeheartedly recommend and trust? Also, interested in hooking up with a local club or locals for some greenlaning & exploring. Any locals on here willing to show a new guy around? Thank you in advance, Paul
  19. So, after being away for work and moving house, I have finally got around to trying to figure out what is going on with my speedo cables breaking. I removed the new speedo and, using one of the broken cables, I inserted it into the back of the speedo and turned it by hand only to find that it is jammed solid... The old speedo is fine & a cheeky squirt of WD40 improved things too. I have been adding WD40 to the new speedo to try and free it up but after 3 days no avail. So, any ideas? Ideally I'd like to use the new one but if needs be I'll reinstate the origional. Does anyone service the speedos? Wish I'd checked before knackering another new speedo cable! Hindsight and all that!
  20. Aye, I am starting to conclude that the new (old stock) speedo might well be an issue. I'll pull it out later on and have a play with it as well as having a play with the old one that I am keeping in comparison. So far as I am aware the speedo cable is a simple push fit onto the back of the speedo...
  21. Hi all, After installing the new 300Tdi I thought I would put a new replacement speedo (showing zero miles) and a new speedo cable. However I must be doing something wrong: I have snapped two brand new (Allmakes) speedo cables! In both instances I installed the cable onto the transfer box speedo drive then took a little test drive with the speedo cable poking out of the dash - on both occasions I clearly saw the speedo cable rotating. I then fitted the cable onto the speedo head and took a little test drive and the speedo didn't work. I the took a little test drive with the speedo cable poking through the dash and the inner no longer turns. Remove it from the transfer box end and both cables have snapped - in the sense that they have twisted & twisted as if they are not able to turn before snapping. What am I doing wrong!?!? I haven't overtightened the nut attaching the speedo cable to the transfer box and from watching the speedo inner turn on the test drive the speedo drive gear must be OK. It only appears to be unable to turn once the speedo is attached but why would it repeatedly snap at the transfer box end?? Hoping this is something simple that I am doing wrong.... Any ideas anyone?? Thanks in advance
  22. Afternoon all, Just a follow up on this thread - the Turner Engineering 300Tdi is in and has just completed its 500 mile running in period. I got it with a gas flowed head and along with a new set of injectors, Alisport header tank, Alisport oil catch tank and a whole host of other new ancillaries. Unfortunately the turbo has just gone - but thankfully I caught it before it went bang and ruined my new engine. Its now in the process of being remanufactured and fingers crossed there ain't much else to go wrong now. Initial impressions of the engine are superb - powerful, smooth and a joy to drive. Whilst costing a fair whack I think it has been the right choice. Turner Engineering (in particular Frida) were an absolute joy to deal with as well. Heres to many more happy Turner powered miles! Paul
  23. Ok, thanks for that Ralph - I'll not do it up stupid tight when the next speedo cable arrives! Thanks again
