  1. Evening all, As much as I'd like to sit here telling you I'd won the lottery, I'm not, thats next week...Nope I won something far better than that - heat! After a dismal winter of with a heater that didn't quite live up to its name this afternoon I changed the cables connecting the levers in the cab with the heater in the engine bay and readjusted everything, now its like a swedish sauna (but sadly without the lovely ladies ). It took half an hour and was dead easy. If you have a crappy heater - give this a go... The loss - well, I filled the tank with diesel and noticed this - doesn't seem too bad but with the price of fuel as it is, it seems a shame to let it drip onto the road to wipe out unsuspecting motorcyclists... Is it just a case of a replacement fillercap (no bad thing as I could do witha locking one) or is it an indication of something more serious? Its the first time I have tried to attach a photo, we'll see - but if not its running down the bofywork under the filler, not in rivers but shiny against the (tatty) paintwork... Any ideas? Thanks, Paul PS - just caught up with the build thread on the mouse from HOFS. Its epic, I have spend the last hour or so just agog as I looked at the Lagoda and the previous entries HOFS use. The team are an inspiration. Have a look if you haven't already... B)
  2. Hi Paul, its another vote for 255 BFG MT. I got a set about a year ago when my much loved Trac Edges finally gave up. Twas a seriously good move, I do a mix of greenlanes, pay n play and road miles and they have been nothing less than superb. I have a Disco transfer box and my 300 Tdi pulls this setup fine (admittedly got a larger intercooler, straight through exhaust, fuel pump tweaked & a K&N - road use only, convert back to standard filter offroad). Do it! But for the love of god - make sure the white lettering goes on the inside.....
  3. Also worth mentioning that we can rule out the thermostat as it was removed before leaving leeds (as it was running 'warm' on the way down....
  4. Afternoon all, I have a bit of an issue from the weekend - bit of an overheating issue (maybe!). Driving back from Leeds on the A1 yesterday and the (standard LR) temp gauge started creeping up. When it was verging on red I pulled over and popped the bonnet - all seemed fine. It wasn't leaking cooland, wasn't pissing white smoke from the exhaust, no lack of power. Waited for it to cool off and popped the coolant cap, at the normal level and flowing too. Called the RAC and the guy who came out used to have a Disco, seemed to know his stuff and reckoned it could well be the temp. sender...How does that sound? I was quite liberal with a can of Gunk on thursday evening and didn't cover electrical components, might this have affected it? It made for a pretty stressful drive as I had the good lady with me who was stressy, "my floors getting hotter..." tried explaining the location of the exhaust and turbo and distinct lack of any sound/heatproofing... We made it in 4 hours as kept stopping to let it cool down just in case RAC man was wrong... 300Tdi ex-military 90 (ex disco 300). Does anyone have advice, opinions, ridicule that may help...Thanks as ever in advance. Paul
  5. Yep, you've herad right - I have there evo oil in my LT77 and it is one of the best upgrades I have made - it really does make a difference. Get some ASAP! Cheers for the advice thus far...
  6. good morning one and all, just a quick query - I am another one starting maintainence and I went to Halfrauds and oil seems jawdroppingly expensive for good oil. How much does a 300Tdi take during an oil change? What type of oil do you fine folk use and where do you get it from at a reasonable cost? Any help/advice gratefully recieved... Cheers, Paul
  7. Hi all, I am in the process of tidying up an ex-military 90 and the spare wheel mounting on the bonnet is surrounded by 4 rubber bits for the spare wheel to rest on. They are either perished or missing - can one of you fine folk advise where I could get replacements from? Thanks in advance, Paul
  8. Hmmmm, good point best put sunday aside - take it slowly and think twice act once!
  9. brilliant - thanks guys! Thats saturday sorted then!
  10. Afternoon all, Got to replace the front bearings this weekend. This will be the first time I have done it and have looked at Les's greatly helpfile on the tech archieve. However I do have some simple questions: where do I get penetrating fluid from, any recommendations on brand and price? And so you actually need to get a special socket to remove the brake caliper bolts or will a conventional socket do it Also does anyone have any helpful tips on doing this that Les hasn't covered... As ever thanks in advance, Paul
  11. Thanks for that Diff. - there was some squeeking coming from the front drivers side, earlier on in the day. Nothing too loud but I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned wheel bearings. I changed the rear ones recently but didn't do the front. In retrospect - I don't think it has overheated. I had just come off the A1 doing 70-80mph for 20 mins, of course it was going to be hot! The temp gauge works (but i like the idea of an accurate uprated one - what do others use in place of the standard Landy one?) and the oil isn't comtaminated and it isn't leaking coolant...I think I just panicked a bit at the roadside. So, something else to check - wheel bearings... Once again thanks for the advice...Paul
  12. Cheers for the advice so far everyone. We can rule out power steering seen as its not fitted. Seems common sense to check the thermostat. I had a look at the steering components whilst waiting the hour and forty five minutes for the tow truck and everything seems in order...As in nothing missing or obviously bent, loose etc. Can't work on it tonight but will be tomorrow so will keep checking for anything else that appears on here and will update with what I find... Thanks again, Paul
  13. Hey guys and girls, Out for a bit of laning yesterday and on the way up into Northumberland the 90 suddenly felt a bit stiff in the steering dept. just momentarily before pulling strongly into the oncoming traffic (bet the bloke I was heading for was well scared!) I immediately pulled over and popped the bonnet and the engine was roasting - I undid the coolant tank cap carefully and it was boiling...The temp. gauge wasn't indicating anymore than halfway up the gauge. It went home on a truck and hasn't been stared since.Anyone any ideas as to where to start. Its an exmilitary 90 with a 300Tdi, big intercooler, 2" lift. Help! Thanks in advance, Paul
  14. Better late than never - a photo of the aforementioned truck!
