  1. There should be a certain amount of end float, stipulated in the manual. End of shaft has a tapped hole so you can insert a bolt to move the shaft so you can measure end-float
  2. Pete, How did you mount the instrument binacle to the top of the Disco's dash ?
  3. Thanks for the feedback. If it doesn't work, I will let you know once my fingers have healed sufficiently to type again
  4. I have always made a paper dial which I stuck onto the crank pulley to measure the 90 degrees which the crank pulley nut has to be turned after the initial 80 Nm. This is all done with a 3/4" drive strong handle. I recently bought a proper dial that indicates the degrees. This, however, has a 1/2" drive. Would this stand up to the 90 degree turning force ? Maybe someone has already tried that ? I would appreciate feedback Thank in advance JZ
  5. Thanks for the advice cipx2 and Les I have tried rtv sealant, no success. Will torque evenly to 25Nm when hot, and see if there is a difference
  6. I bought a length of "O"-ring rubber and a tube of super glue, and made a seal On my vacuum pump, one of the sealcovers was also leaking (one of those sunken holes) Covered that with silicon, and no more leaks after that No hassles after more than a year
  7. I have a tappet cover leak at the rear of the engine, driver side. Have replaced the tappet cover gasket, but no change. Breather is open & clean Did I miss a special trick in fitting the gasket ? Thanks in advance JZ
  8. A friend's 4 liter V8 D2 has a distict gas smell in the cooling water. We did a copression test, and found 7 cylinders sitting on 800 kPa (@1500m above sea level), and 1 cylinder sitting at 650 He had the head gaskets replaced, but the smell is still there. Apart from a crack in a head, anything else to look for ? Thanks in advance JZ
  9. Model is 1998 3-door, but fortunately not an ECU model, which means that we can discard the probe. The manifold gasket developed a leak, and fried the probe. Thanks for all the advice, really appreciated
  10. What is the function of the probe/monitor on top of the 300 TDi between the tappet cover and the inlet manifold ? Square terminal with 2 wires. Sits in the middle of the engine Advice appreciated

    D2 Cooling

Well, this is what I find unusual; this car has only one electric fan, situated on the left hand side (when looking through the grille slats). Maybe a PO has removed one of the fans ?
  12. I noticed on a 2004 Disco 2 V8 that there is a electrical fan mounted in front of the radiator. This fan starts when the engine is hot, independently from the aircon. What is the purpose of this fan ? The viscous looks big enough to handle all the cooling needs of the V8 I could not see an aircon heat exchanger or fan in front of the radiator. Where is this fitted ? Thanks in advance JZ
  13. The pump needs to be at the correct position on the cam, before the manual lever will operate. Turn the engine by hand a few degrees at a time, 'till you can feel resistance on the manual lever Can you feel resistance on the old pump when you operate the lever ? One thing that I have learnt, rather spend a few extra quid on an original LR pump, than aftermarket pumps, which appear to have a very short working life. The aftermarket ones tend to break the link from the manual lever to the diaphragm. Broken lift pumps have various effects. My last experience was that the engine would miss and stutter when cold, untill the main pump managed to suck fuel from the tank. Thereafter it would be OK
  14. No, have not tried that. But I doubt if it will help, all the Disco owners I know have the same problem !
  15. Also a bit short on memory this side, but me thinks the input bearing on the later R380s is wider
  16. To get a real appreciation for the LR temp gauge "action", install a VDO with its appropriate sensor, and see the difference. I often towed a trailer in summer and the standard gauge always showed the temperature to be fine. (I'm in South Africa, summer temps in certain parts of our country get close to 40 Celsius) After installing the VDO, I tapped off on long inclines, cause the temp gauge moved rapidly to 110 ! Scary !
  17. I have the same question. Once saw a Disco made into a single cab pick-up, and the loading space was very small. But, seeing that we live in modern, technological times, maybe a pick-up that has enough space for a notebook will be sufficient Good luck !
  18. Mmm...... good point. Will check distance between left & right hand side front to rear. I am on holliday currently, and do not have the Disco with me, but will check in 2 weeks time. Thanks
  19. Well, you needn't go to the Sahara, or tow an elephant. Just add 6 adults, hook a 4x4 trailer, and go to Namibia in winter. That gauge (VDO) hardly ever gets below 100 C. Jim is right. In Africa a TDi is undercooled My son called me today whilst on his way back from holliday. After a long climb up a mountain pass, (in the Karoo; a dry, hot area) the high temp alarm in his Disco TDi started screaming. He stopped, and waited for the engine to cool down. Phoned me later to give me an update on the amount of cars standing by the roadside with engine hoods lifted. Various makes In Africa, a TDi's cooling capabilities get well tested !
  20. Aha, thanks. I did go the Ausie tutorial with the pictures. Very helpfull Are you implying that Land Rovers are irregular cars ?
  21. Eish Jim, don't tell me you didn't recognise that I was a boertjie ! Will go to Brian's site, thanks
  22. Thanks everyone for replying Jim, I'm sure that I should get permission from the owner (me) If it is fixed with an unreachable cirlip, how do you replace that after fitting the bearing ? Seeing that you and I sit on the same side of the globe, maybe your referance to Robert is a neighbourly thing ?
  23. Anybody replaced the bearings in a TDi aircon compressor ? Some advice needed, as the bearing/s is/are shot. Makes a squeeking noise when off, and a bad rumbling noise when in service. Appreciated Regards JZ
  24. No I didn't. Would that not upset the wheel allignment/toe-in ?
