  1. I need to change the calipers on our 1996 Discovery. I had thought of buying cheap Britpart calipers, replacing the pistons with stainless steel ones, and the seals with good quality ones. This would give me a set ready to change and limit the period the vehicle was out of use. In view of Vulcan Bomber's comment does this mean I can use 110 calipers instead, and they will fit straight on the existing Discovery mountings and solid discs?

Did you buy the britpart calipers ?, i will be doing a vented disc conversion to my 98 discovery and see that the britpart calipers are just over 30 quid each although i generally steer clear of britpart items but will need to factor in freight .

  2. I agree with most that say make it reliable, use it then decide what direction you want to head. My 300tdi is a daily driver which doesnt mean it cant be a capable offroad vehicle as well, had mine for 7 years and has gradually gone from stock to how it is now, next mod is a VNT turbo upgrade which has brought me here to search.

  3. Cheers for that cos thats what its getting.Hoping to fit the suspension on friday.I read somewhere on here that you should space the

anti roll bar to chassis mountings by the same amount as the lift,is this true as i've not seen that mentioned before.

Never touched the swaybars and articulation is still pretty good.

  4. yes there loads stronger and i dont have the money for ashcrofts but i do have friends that can help :)

is there any web sites or instructions to point me in the right direction

    many thanks B)

Also try outerlimits and aulro both aussie sites, generally with hilux cv's you fit toyo centres in the rover housings as well so you upgrade the whole setup.

  5. Need to replace my PAS pump and getting quotes to post to OZ, noticed some sell the ZF oem unit and some sell a Britpart unit. Is the britpart replacement up to the task or am i better off spending the extra and getting a ZF pump ?

  6. There should be no detectable movement other than rotational in the pump. The retaining pin inside it is wearing away. You might be able to replace the pin, but it's not a seperate part from Land Rover, and there's no rebuild kit available either. This is a picture of the pin and it's location on the shaft. The shaft is fitted from the inside, and then the pin is fitted to keep it in place in relation to the front bearing. On the outside - behind the pulley, there's a plate to assist in keeping the shaft bearing in place. The plate may have come loose, but generally - the plate is distorted by the forces trying to shove the bearing out. You can remove the plate and straighten it, and it'll be fine for a while, but it'll do it again. The plate isn't up to the job in my opinion.

    Les.

Has anyone successfully rebuilt a 300tdi ps pump ? my just started shredding the a rib off the serp belt and replacement cost is 3 x times what you guys pay in the UK for them.

  7. Good to hear, so the carbs are still less the pistons? do you think that either the stepper or the ecu or even the ego sensor were possibly faulty ? I am looking at the pro's and cons and so far your's is the only carby rangie i have seen with a cl system fitted. I had basically the setup with the twin strommies etc but i was having problems getting it to run right ( similar probs to what you were having) so i pulled it off and fitted a holley carb and a simpler impco system just so i could use it.

  8. Would MS have a learning function ? Reading on RPI's site that the later efi systems will learn the lpg mapping and then have to re learn the petrol map again once switched. If there are the right inputs, ego, tps, tach, map wouldnt MS using maybe MS tweak Learn to map for lpg ? I already have an impco lpg setup and also have the sprintgas 4brl mixer but soon going to fit a leyland 4.4 in so may have to change the setup i use, ideally i need to be able to fit a snorkle for the dusty summer conditions we have plus to bring some cooler air into the engine - the 4.4 is approx. 20mm higher and wider and rover manifolds only work with spacers which tend to have leakage problems.

  9. Here is another non specific mechanic joke :D

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and was

on the verge of being burned out. Hoping to try another career where

skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to change careers and

    become a mechanic.

He found out from the local technical college what was involved,

signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all

    he could.

When the time for the practical exam approached, the gynecologist

prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with

tremendousskill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find

that he had obtained a score of 150%.

Fearing an error, he called the instructor, saying "I don't want to

appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wondered if

there had been an error which needed adjusting."

The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart

perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the

engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of

    the mark."

The instructor went on to say," I gave you an extra 50% because you

did all of it through the muffler."

  10. Surely it can't just be as simple as that?

    1) Unbolt body

    2) Jack it up at the front

    3) Put spacers in

    4) Jack it up at the back

    5) Put spacers in

    6) Wiggle the steering wheel and tighten up the steering column.

Surely if it was that simple, everyone would be doing it to be able to get a set of 235/85 or 265/70 tyres on?

    Confused now

Not quite, with a 2" body lift you need to - lenghten all brake lines, extend body/ chassis mounts, re mount rad so it either sits back in line with the fan or chop the shroud tp fit, extend transfer lever and open up the hole in the tunnel for the extra movement required, auto shifter is mounted to floor so no mods needed, extend seatbelt chassis mounts, steering as above slacken wiggle do back up, check any wiring/fuel lines that may get stretched. There will be more i cant think of at the moment. You need longer bolts obviously and a good time to fit new body rubbers in.

The 2" spring lift+ 2 "b/lift is a common combo for rangies down here

  11. This should make fridge's ears prick up, i have recently swapped an lpg setup from 1 rangie to another and will soon be swapping the 3.5 with a leyland 4.4 V8. Now i have been toying with efi'ing the 4.4 using a tbi unit of a local aussie ford, so i am thinking out loud here, have also been reading with interest about closed loop lpg systems and how it would be possible to have a seperate map in a MS ecu to control the lpg as well as one for petrol ? Does this sound feasible or a bit way out ? I believe once the parmeters are set there shouldnt be any reason why it couldnt work.

    Regards,

    Nick.
