  1. I don't know whether it's the same as the stuff you use over there, but here's a load of info about it - toxicity is discussed at the bottom of the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_spirit
  2. If it's none of the above, I'd suggest you take a careful look at the various bits attached to the fuel tank. If one of the pipes has an air leak, it could cause the problems you mentioned...
  3. Folks - please don't even consider trying white spirit - I used to use it as a cutting lubricant when I did cylinder head porting. Without realising it, I was breathing it in... After a while I started getting mystery headaches - they got worse and worse until I had to have a series of tests including a brain scan. Things got to the point where I was getting lost going home (I don't drink, so it wasn't that...). In the end, I got a different job and stopped working on heads. Over time, the pains in my head went away, and I forgot all about them - until many years later when I did some more porting. Within minutes of breathing in the white spirit, the pains came back - so as you can imagine, I've stayed well clear of white spirit ever since...
  4. I'm hoping to get my new bulkhead sprayed with Line-X in the near future. If all goes well, it'll give me excellent corrosion resistance as well as some added sound-deadening. Fingers crossed!
  5. Thanks chaps - I thought it must be there for assembly purposes, but I've put so much time, effort and cash into my Landy project that I'd rather ask a dumb question than find out too late that I should've sought advice!
  6. I'm in the process of fitting a new clutch release bearing/fork/slave cylinder, etc. to my LT77 / 200TDI. I'm stuck though - the little plastic clip that's meant to secure the release bearing doesn't fit properly. There's a hole in the fork that it's supposed to fit into, but the hole appears to be too big. Is the clip the wrong item (it came in the same bag as the fork), or am I missing something?
  7. Les - you're a star! Many thanks indeed! :)
  8. So - having got myself a nice shiny Turner short block, I need to make sure my old oil pump is capable of keeping everything lubed... I read somewhere about pump rebuild kits for the 200TDI, but I've no idea where to get such a thing (Google didn't help). Does anyone here know who supplies them? If not, how should I go about rejuvenating my pump?
  9. For those of us in the SW, there's a Land Rover 'jumble' event called the South West Rummage at Okehampton Showground on August 22nd - see: http://www.southwestrummage.co.uk/ I don't know much about it, but hopefully it'll be worth a look!
  10. Many thanks for your thoughts - I am running +2" shocks...
  11. As ever, many thanks for the helpful info!
  12. Mark - many thanks for your helpful comments. Although I'm very experienced with competition vehicles, the only time they went off-road was when something had gone badly wrong... Consequently, I'm most grateful for any advice from the seasoned experts on here! Oh, and I have several guards underneath, so couldn't see the need for the 'guide plate'!
  13. As the front end of my Defender project nears completion, I need to sort out a couple of things: There's a sort of 'guide plate' (I don't know the correct term) for the track rod which bolts to the diff housing. What is this meant to do? I've fitted a heavy-duty track rod which is much thicker than the standard item. Consequently, there's very little clearance for the guide plate. I'm therefore wondering if the plate needs to be fitted? I've fitted +2" springs & dampers as well as castor-correction radius arms, etc. This leaves me wondering what length bump stops I need... As it'll be some time before the bodywork is fitted, I don't know how to go about determining what's required. I guess one way would be if I were to use some HD ratchet tie-downs to see how far the springs will compress. Any other suggestions? As ever, any help would be much appreciated!
  14. Many thanks - as I couldn't get a firm recommendation on this company, I went for a Turner short motor...
  15. It stands me in about £600 plus countless hours of renovation work...
  16. I measured up the PTO pump today, and tried to find a shorter one. It appears to be a 22cc/rev Group 2 item with a Euro mount. While there are lots of others available with lower pumping volumes, they all seem to be the same length (around 120mm), which is a pain... Anyone want to buy a complete Superwinch 525 set-up?
  17. My 525 set-up has a PTO-mounted hydraulic pump which then runs a slave motor that in turn drives the winch. I agree that it's overkill, but I want to be sure I can self-recover if I get stuck whilst out shooting in the middle of the night!
  18. Bishbosh - you are quite right, I'm not into heavy winching - just the capacity for occasional recovery. If I can't get a shorter pump, I'll do as you suggest!
  19. Adrian - many thanks for the superb info - that is VERY helpful indeed! I had already come to the same conclusion as you suggest - i.e. a shorter pump. If you would be so kind as to measure your drop boxes it would be much appreciated. By the way - I take it by 'drop box', you mean the pump, rather than the entire PTO?
  20. Gentlemen - many thanks for your comments - I clearly need to find out more!
  21. I've been looking at buying a stripped 200 Tdi motor from Landy Ltd. Their ads sound convincing enough, but as I know nothing about them, I'd be most grateful for any comments as to what they're like to deal with, reputation, after sales service, etc.
  22. A few months ago, I did a deal for an ex-power utilities TD5 110 Superwinch 525. I then spent ages renovating everything - the PTO was scrupulously cleaned inside and out, then fitted with new bearings and stainless fasteners, etc. The bumper was sand-blasted then painted with micaceous iron oxide, followed by gloss black Hammerite, etc, etc. Anyway - I fitted the transfer box/gearbox to my 200Tdi Defender 110 last week, then decided that the space above the rear prop / under the rear passenger seats would be a much better place to site the winch. I'd never liked the idea of having all that weight hanging over the front, and having it pointing rearwards would also help me haul heavy stuff into the back. I was therefore happy to get stuck in to relocate everything. At least I was, until I discovered that the TD5 PTO is actually 30mm too long to fit between the 200Tdi transfer box and chassis crossmember... OK - as I don't want to cut my brand-new galvanised Richards chassis, the PTO is just not going to fit. This means that I have two basic options - I either make a nice pile of 525 parts and sell them to fund an electric winch, or I find another way to drive the 525. I realise that I could mount a pump on the engine, but it occured to me that it might be possible to drive the 525's input shaft with an electric motor... So - my question is this: Has anyone heard of this, or something similar ever being done?
  23. Thanks for the continued help - as you say, the photos on the LRSeries site are excellent!
