  1. Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to have a proper route around tomorrow in the light, tonight was the first time I've tried to move it since I posted the other thread so I haven't a hads chance to examine in the daytime but at least I now have some places to start. Thanks Jamir
  2. Well my gearbox must of heard about my recent thread and has now went on protest, it now feels as though the clutch is going as trying to get into reverse just gives a massive grinding noise and takes a fair push to get in, first and second are nigh on impossible to get in without much shouting and pushing, feels as though the stick is just butting up against something solid and won't move, 3rd and 4th will only go in if the revs are timed absolutely perfectly. The grinding only happens when trying to get reverse though? Also I'm suspecting the clutch more as the pedals bite is now really low and in the first bit of movement when letting the pedal come back back up, Cheers Jamie
  3. That's what has us confused, I can feel the synchro starting to go on 3rd but all the other gears go in fine but .4th is an absolute nightmare with any sort of load out on it. The vehicles only done 84,000 but I'll take the inspection cover off and see what I can see. Cheers Jamie
  4. Hi everyone I have horrendous backlash in 4th gear when putting strain on the box such as accelerating or going uphill. The car is an '89 90 with the 19j engine and standard transmission. Any ideas of the cause and how to fix it? Cheers
  5. I may join you on the Saturday as I'm at a college in Penrith, will confirm nearer the time
  6. Neither do I haha, I'm hoping to get out for the first time sometime soon
  7. Hi Is anyone planning a laneing trip this weekend around the Durham/Northumberland area? Cheers Jamie
  8. Hi guys Is there a greenlanes club in the Durham area? I'm new to all this so just trying to find information Cheers Jamie
  9. Hi guys I was struggling to put my '89 2.5 td in diff lock the other day and eventually gave up trying, is there a special technique or just need a lot of force? Cheers
  10. Cheers, I took the UJ off and it was completely seized in one direction if you know what I mean, going to try freeing it but for the price will probably just replace. Thanks for the info on the bushes. Do you know if they can be converted to bearings and if so is it worth doing? Cheers
  11. Hi My 1989 defender 90 has Notchy steering and won't self centre, I think this could be a seizing UJ but have also been told to check the top swivel joints. What are you opinions? Also will it be on railko bushes or bearings? Cheers
  12. I'm not worrying about anything in my engine, just having heard stories of engines blowing up at 70,000 - 80,000 miles thought I would see what the general consensus was on these engines. Cheers
  13. Hi guys Just out of interest how long can I expect a well maintained 19j to last for? Currently on 83,000 ish. Thanks
  14. I'm pretty sure, it's just hard to tell with the amount of water still on the roof. It's had the hose pipe test and not leaked any more though so fingers crossed haha Cheers
  15. Thanks guys, I know that the temp difference will cause condensation but there is still a lot of residual water from the leaks that is adding to the condensation. What's the best way to get rid of this? Cheers
  16. Hi guys My 90 was leaking but carefull application of a tiny bit of silicon (read copious amounts) has stopped that problem, however there is still water on the inside that condenses and covers the roof in the load area, what's the best way to dry the inside out? Cheers
  17. Thanks, thought it might be but always better to ask and make sure
  18. Hi guys I know all the main types of engine for defenders such as the 12+19j engines through the tdi's onwards etc. but I'm I'm not sure of the correct way to refer to the engine in my defender. It's a 2.5 turbo diesel from 1989. Is that a 19j or is it a xxxtdi? Thanks
  19. Hi guys I'm missing the black bit that attaches to my windscreen washer that produces the 2 separate jets. Could someone tell me the correct name for this part and also where best to get one quickly. Thanks Jamie
  20. Cheers guys, the biggest we had was 36mm which was no where near
  21. Hi guys Just on with setting the tappets on my 1989 2.5 turbo diesel 90. Original plan was to put a socket on the end of the crankshaft and turn the engine that way but we don't have a big enough socket. So my question is what size socket is needed so we can borrow one from somewhere? If your interested we managed to set one tappet just by turning the engine over via the alternator but gave up after the first one as it was taking ages to get the next tappet up to set it. Cheers Jamie
  22. I knew there was something wrong with the wheels but I couldn't put my finger on it, cheers fellas. Shouldn't be a hard job to do over the weekend or something
  23. I do t know if anyone will remember but I bought this car as a project to tidy up for my 17th birthday. Well my dad surprised me by having a full body respray done while I was away for a month and the car looks almost brand new
