i think the limiting factor is going to be the engine design. the 300 tdi has it's roots back to the old n/a engines, and as such is quite an old design - overhead valve.
the vw boys have been producing ohc diesels, which as a basic rule are much more likely to be able to handle higher rpm's than our LR units.

well, it's not the filler cap. he has taken it off and driven it up the road, and experienced the same symptoms.

no, it was a 2.5 n/a before, and there is 3/4 of a tank of diesel in there.

all we could see last night as it was sat on the drive, was some white ish smoke from the exhaust, which i assumed was from the fact that it was cold.
not noticed anything from the exhaust when the power is lost though, it was too cold and dark, will have to have a look in the daylight tomorrow.

This is a perplexing one. Mate's Defender 90 fitted with a Disco 200tdi lump has lost power, we have replaced the fuel filter and the lift pump, but this has not solved the problem.
The symptoms are that it will start and run, it will drive up the road about 200 yards, and then it loses all power, similar to a lift pump fail, nothing but tickover available, not even foot flat to the floor.
The fuel lines are clear, the tank looks clean (the pick up pipe was removed and cleaned yesterday) and the filter is new.
When the lift pump was replaced last, the new one came with a spacer block, this was intially fitted, but then removed as the cam wasn't operating the rod, without the spacer, the pump operates fine.
We also have a clear inline filter fitted, and you can see the fuel pumping into this, however, when you drivbe it up the road, it goes fine, then loses all power.
Any ideas guys n gals????

no, they don't come in a blue box, lol, they come in a green one. i'm not suspecting the quality of the pumps, as we have tried two different manufacturers to try and eliminate that problem. my suspocion is that it's picking up rubbish from inside the tank, and killing the pumps.

there was a write up on here (i think) or it may have been another forum about a guy in france who did this, and it was a fantastic job he made of it. will try to find the link.

had similar problem with mine, turned out to be one of the mounting bolts had dropped out of the slave cylinder, and it was moving around. new bolt with some loctite on it cured the problem.
it could of course be one of the cylinders leaking internally. has it lost any fluid?

Let's put this one out to the general forum guru's and see what we get shall we.
Would it be possible to replace the cam driven lift pump with a more reliable electric pump?
I can't see any problem to this, apart from getting one with a reasonable flow rate for diesel (which is of course slightly harder to pump tham petrol)
My main reason for asking is that my mate's Defender appears to eat lift pumps every six months or so and we can't work out why.......

you can order a front pipe with flexi (but no cat) from a timax supplier (unipart/express factors etc), part number LR196J, this is essentially the same as the cat pipe, but obviously without the cat
I got a "performance exhaust" from paddocks for about £40. it came as a straight pipe instead of a centre box, and a rear section, with all clamps etc....which was pretty good value.
with the egr removed, intercooler, manifold and pipes cleaned, head decoked, and the cat evicted, mine is definately better low down, and in this cold weather it shifts along at a fair rate as well, when road conditions allow anyway.

Already had it in the W.Mids, about 4cm so far, but more to come tonight. One of our customers in Bromyard has just told me it's started snowing again over there.

yes, you will notice a difference in the consumption. my old v8 used to use quite a lot more fuel when it was cold. the 300tdi on the other hand has got quicker, mostly due to the cold air on the intercooler.

Went for a bit of sledging action on Hay Bluff yesterday (3/1) with the family (all 7 seats occupied in the Disco).
Was darn cold, but the Disco kept on going through the snow. Needed low range and diff lock for the last little bank, at one point was sliding backwards, whilst in 2nd gear trying to go forwards

mine did the same, patched it up with some silicone tape, been fine for couple of k now....

i noticed that they weren't too fussy as to where it was sprayed either. in one pick it shows the chassis done with nice clean looking shocks, but in another, they have sprayed everything, including the shocks, springs, steering damper etc.....not sure i would want waxoil/dinitrol on my shocks/springs, especially when it came to having to take them off to change them......

smaller capacity maybe? but surely the most power/torque on a diesel is developed below 3k usually, so what would be the point of having a diesel that revs to 7k?
