Hi John I have some ideas on your winch set up will have a chat to you at the 4x4 show.
hopefully I will have managed to have a chat with someone from danfoss before then.

Hi John.
where did you manage to cadge a lump of billet that size from
I hope you have swept up all the swarf and weighed it in.
Surely enough to at least buy a pint or two.
Any way of producing another incorporating daff variomatic transmission
I see your major advantage with this new design is not needing to worry abot the rope bunching up.
I recon I could have done that for you in an hour or so
all you needed to do was bodge a few spacers betwen the frame and your old winch job done and 69 hours extra drinking time.
look forward to seeing you and the gang soon.
P.S. still got Slindon mud on my truck, must get round to washing it one of these next few weeks.

I have bought a service exchange box lt77 200tdi disco box from them and within 5000 miles the second gear died, I took the vehicle back to them and insisted they correct it.
After nearly a week and several awquard phone calls they fixed the box trying to claim that I had been responsible for the failure.
They tried to get me to pay for the repair costs but backed down when I went to collect my vehicle.
This was approximately 3 years ago,I have since sold that gear box to a friend of mine who uses his disco for occasional play days only and has not had any problems.
I have to say that I have since used and recomended ashcroft transmissions on a couple of occasions since even though legs are relatively local to me.

I used to run Kam 4:75 but broke one and found it verry difficult to get hold of a replacement so ended up converting back to 3:54 and buying an ashcroft underdrive unit.

Just double check all your track rod ends and the tightness of the bolts to the front pan had rod.
I have had similar symptoms when the pan had rod was slightly loose, a mate of mine had similar symptoms when his drop arm track rod end had worn slightly.

The system Dave (lama) talks of has been under arduous test and development for the last 12 months or so.
Various ram bore options have been looked into tried and tested.
The idea of putting it into the position that was previously occupied by the steering damper on a defender allows the ram to be kept high up reducing the risk of being damaged, this also makes pluming simpler neater and less vulnerable.
The original intention of this kit is for it to be a straight bolt on kit mainly for helping out the steering when larger tires have been fitted, for example when people create winch challenge style vehicles.
This kit helps reduce the effort required to turn the steering but also reduces the load on the steering box, I personally know of at least a couple of steering boxes that have failed after serious winch challenge competition use/abuse.

My opinion.
keep the 300 tdi axle and replace the diff with an ARB diff.
As for the load rating issue where is the proof?
There is a 10mm? difference in the spring mounting point centers between 90 and 110 axles this is to compensate for the larger diameter springs that are fitted to 110 vehicles.
The 300 tdi half shafts are the same diamiter as salisbury shafts, the hubs are the same with the same bearings I believe.
The arb is 4 pin so will withstand far more abuse than a standard 90 one.
plus you get to have the chance of locking the rear axle with the addition of a compressor.
If you need to strengthen the dif even more then look into getting the diff "pegged"

There is many a rumour that a certain make of orange spring
becomes naturally softer with age.
If this is the case I am sure there will be loads of people offering to sell you their old ones
.
Seriously though the orange spring supplyer would gladly get springs made to what ever spec you should ask.
People are recommending changing your shocks? It could be that your current shocks are already too firm for your requirements?
Would it be worth considering changing your seats to a better quality after market item?
Just trying to think out of the box.

Loads to do on my truck plus my co driver has insisted I fit a wireless remote for the front winch.
-
and if you fit an eleccy winch in the center you get a self recovery mecanism system for when you roll and cant use the engine
plus it helps with the more odd punches.
-
has everybody sorted fixing points for the marshals to atach punch cards/cyber keys?
Havent done anything to my truck yet but have booked thursday off work to have a lok at it.
-
how many people would be interested in an event with a similar format based in mid wales tuff terrains or tomys during the christmas to newy year holiday period?
-
So where about can you do the lantra training, and is there any age restriction on it ?? and what sort of price ?
I am interested to know some more along this front.
Possibly arrange a forum group course?
Split into different levels according to experiance?
-
Suppose I better have a look at my truck then, are there any prizes for bling lights?
-
would we be allowed to take a chain saw?

Evening All,
I did make it back on Sunday night, but have been of the radar for a couple of days due to work. I just thought I would have a look on the LR4x4 (The DARK SIDE, am I allowed in here
) to see what people were saying about the weekend only to see that someone, not naming anybody (Badger)
has placed a picture of me on my side. I thought I may have got away with that one, with no evidence.
But as the comments alreadly placed about the weekend, well what a good/enjoyable day, slight shame about the weather, but made it more interesting
Some of the water was very deep, thanks to my new diesel engine on worried on damp problems
I can now through the WD can out & into the carry box(Adrian I have some going spare
)
Well I must also say I am very happy with finally being the bride & not the bridesmaid in the Standard class, been knocking on the door in the last couple of round, and it finally happened.
Damage for the weekend:
1. Two injector seating washer (injectors taken out due to roll over)
2. Driver side wing mirror.
3. Fuel return hose (nearly woren through, badly routed)
Therefore nothing two drastic.
The bolts problem was, the steering arm decided to rip/snap at the steering box end, leaving the trackrod end separated from the rest of the arm.
Well looking forward the Walters now. Good luck Saley on the AGRF, but make sure you work that new B!t$h hard as I heard he is a bit of a slacker. (Sorry Rob)
Taff.
Cheers mate I thought I was going for a holiday with complimentary bog mud bath

There you go boasting about the height of your axle's again!
Rob early
it'll never happen!
at least I wasn't early leaving
-
looks like portal axles are starting to show their strengths
-
going to have a look at mine this afternoon wont be up there till late tomorrow evening.
doo we need to be running rope extensions to drop into that pit again?
-
Steve you make a good point about that article.
I belive any publicity is better than no publicity.
The problem with all sports is that if you ask 10 people you are quite likely to bet 10 different answers.
The best way to learn is to take part, the comments in the article are probably quite good to get started, but you might end up starting again if you decide to get more competative.

The point hit report would be very interesting if I could see a map of where all the points were
I spent 20 min changing an albright in the morning and spent 5 min or so helping Alan Kemp move off a rock, allso helped tow kevin P out after his roll otherwise I had a very busy day.
I am a definate convert to auto for use when winching but prefer manual when on the road.
My co driver's only ever experiance of auto was shunting my vehicle around up untill this week end so to come firs in the reverse trial was great.
There was a chap with a tray back 90 who I helped change a half shaft for when I was at kirton in linsey and in the last 10 min of this comp he returned the favour and acted as my ground anchor on a paticularly greasy punch, thanks again as I didnt have much chance on Sunday.
every body comented on my front tyres looking flat this week end but I think running them at 6psi worked well for me at this site
looks like I am going to have to work hard at keeping my standard up for the next 4 events
-
very impressed looks like you could be getting orders for casing repairs in the future.
-
I almost ordered one then decided that I would sit back and wait to hear some reviews from you lot
-
Ask Les he knows how to do a damn good job of welding a cross member on in just the wrong place
.
I know it is too late now as I have seen that you have already cut off your old cross member, but ysually I tack up a jig from the existing (good) chassis to good reference points on the rear cross member before cutting the old one off, if the rear tub was still on the mounting holes accross the back sometimes act as my alignment jig within reason.

I am running a pair of these 33/12.50/15 on the front of my land cruiser and have been for some 6 months or so if they carry on like they have been then they shall go on the back when the muds that are currently there have worn out and a new set will be bought for the front.
