  1. Now thats an idea - along with the inner wings right!
  2. Yep, and you can get your whole hand or whatever tool to hold the damper when fitting or removing. Indeed, I like galv stuff. I've also had quite a few bits of mine powder coated - it does look good. Although I'm happy sticking with galv if its been done as that looks good too!
  3. Oh thanks for the picture That looks great - all that room! I know there's no side loadings, I'm being silly really but think they seem weaker for just the vertical motion of the shock. They do look good, I'm going to order some tomorrow.
  4. Yes I'll certainly ask to be sure. By the look of them they should be fine. I've also had great service from him so happy to use him and his are far cheaper than than the d44 ones. It's just that Gwyns look like a weaker design, I'm sure they are strong enough though! I'm not really a fan of having to force stuff to get it to fit! I can't anyways as I'd squash a brake pipe on the RHS. If it was very slight Ii probably would but it really isn't unfortunately. Mine is also an older model, '89 110 - did the inner wings change with the introduction of the tdi so that these turrets fit later models with no problems? I still find it a bit odd that these products are sold without fitting properly - so perhaps they do on later models..?
  5. I had a similar problem and got concerned - It turned out to be the handbrake sticking. I certainly would check this before moving on to more serious possibilities. Failing that its possibly transfer box input gear wear... do you know if you have a cross-drilled input gear or not as older defenders are renowned for this problem.
  6. Yep, reckon I'll give Gwyn a call tomorrow morning and order a pair. So just to confirm, Gwyns don't go anywhere near the damn wing!? Do you reckon I should bolt the wings on and fit the turrets after or hold out and fit the turrets first? It was just the plan for today to get both wings fitted but I just ended up with more bits off! Tis how it goes I s'pose!
  7. I suppose I could do, but they are quite far off and the brake pipe is squeezed between the wing and turret! On factory turrets it had enough space to flap about. here is a photo of the wing fitted as far as it will go with the turret bolted down, it gives a better idea of how off it is (look where the wing meets the bulkhead). The wing really is squeezed in this photo - as far as I dare, after spending last week painting it!
  8. CaptCarrot are you referring to the D44 turrets? I like the look of them as-well and agree in that they make fitting the dampers easier, thats partly why i went aftermarket in the first place. But if I'm going to have to bend my inner wing I don't think it's worth it.
  9. oh dear! It's really messed up my sunday plan of refitting both wings today...! Do you know if the D44 ones fit without fouling the wings? I'm pretty sure, due to the nature of the mounting holes they only fit in two positions 180 degrees apart, but as they are symmetrical this makes no difference. If you swap them around to the other side you have the same problem but a different part of the turret fouls the wing. They can't be mounted any other way. Gwyn Lewis ones may be the way forward if they don't touch anything - I have his 2nd alternator mount and its great along with excellent service from Gwyn! However what put me off the Gwyn Lewis ones originally is that they look as if they could bend as they only have 2 struts... though I doubt it really and certainly cheaper than Devon ones
  10. Hi all, I've got to the point during my rebuild to re-fitting the wings. I have fitted tubular turrets that appear to be quite readily available. However they foul the inner wing. I tried swapping them from side to side to no avail. Given that these seem to be quite a common product I'm surprised they don't fit. Has anybody else had this problem or am I just missing something? I don't fancy cutting anything to make them fit or anything like that and will just get standard ones if these really dont fit. These will be sent back as not fit for purpose if that is the case. The photos are both of the RHS wing with both turrets fitted. As you can see they both foul the wing just in different places. Thanks
  11. True, but I can't drive it at the moment, still part way through a re-build! I've come round to the view it can't be that hard especially after what I've already done - it's just that I don't like uncertainty before starting a job and would rather have all the bits and a plan to get it done! Anyways can't happen all the time. I might do it with universal mounts now and get welded ones done when its running again, which hopefully won't be too long now! Thanks for you help everybody.
  12. thanks guys, Western in http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=25027&hl=%2Bcentre+%2Bsilencer#entry251845 you say that a full tdi system wont fit unless you change the vehicle part of the hanger mounts. This is the issue. But they can't be that far off, well I wouldn't have thought so! Thanks eightpot, universal hangers is a good idea - no idea why I didn't think of that! No I don't have a welder and trying to avoid welding although I did consider getting a cheap one and giving it a shot! I think I should just get a tdi system and make it fit perhaps with the odd universal hanger.
  13. I agree in that the difference will probably be small and I probably won't notice, especially without trying both where it then may become apparent! However LR fitted a larger pipe for a reason so I expect there will be a small difference and I'd like to give this engine the best chance it has (if i notice it or not!). So if its not going to be too much effort to fit the correct pipe I'd rather do that. If it's going to be a big job butchering and re-welding mounts I would simply use the TD system I have. Thanks again, If the chassis hanger mounts are in the same place I'll order up a complete 200tdi system and just bolt it on. I had just found some conflicting information when searching this issue that the 200tdi does not line up and the 300tdi system does but It now sounds as if this isn't true. Does anybody know for sure before I order a complete exhaust system and hangers?! Or does anybody have a bright idea of how to check without having the exhaust?? Thanks again
  14. Thanks for the help guys, and the offer Reb, much appreciated. However I do have a 2 year old TD exhaust fitted at the moment, I'm just deciding if i want to use it or fit the tdi system or even get a stainless system made! I also used the TD pipe with a disco 200tdi with no issues for 2 years, but I have rebuilt the defender unit and had the FIP and turbo rebuilt and just concerned about fitting a smaller exhaust after all this work, paranoia perhaps! Am I right in thinking the TD pipe ID is 2 1/2 inches and the tdi ID 2 3/4 inches? If so the difference is more than it sounds due to the squared relationship of a circle/pipe so the 1/4 inch difference in diameter effectively becomes a whole inch difference in x-sectional area. Western you are right, the tdi hangers are bolt on fittings which is good news, I now need to see if their mounting brackets on the chassis are any different or in the same place. Although I wont really be able to tell unless I have the exhaust with me - any ideas? If they are the same it will be pretty simple to sort out in the end. But if not I will probably just use the TD system and be done with it!
  15. Thanks Western, So does the TD downpipe mate up to the 200tdi manifold? or would I use the 200tdi downpipe and mate that to the rest of the TD system? I managed to get the defender downpipe when I got the engine and it has a clamp with 2 bolts where my TD mid section has a clamp with three bolts so could be an issue there. But If the 200tdi follows the same route and has bolt on hangers I'll give that some consideration as the welding was my biggest concern having not done any before...
  16. Hello everybody, I'm new to this forum, well as a member; I have used the wealth on information on here numerous times and thought it probably time to give something back, well if I have any useful info! And be able to ask specific questions. I've owned a Ex MoD 110 for a few years and put a 200tdi disco engine in about 2 years ago. I have now removed the disco engine and replaced it with a 200tdi def engine with all the defender bits and pieces to make it as much of a genuine 200tdi defender as possible. Whilst before was a quick engine swap this time round has turned into a bit of a rebuild with more emphasis on doing it properly, which brings me on to my problem... I fitted a 2.5 TD exhaust to go with the first (disco) 200tdi engine and a steve parker downpipe. However I would like to use the slightly larger correct 200tdi exhaust this time but understand it is quite different from the 2.5td exhaust. Does anybody know what exactly is different, other than having hangers as opposed to clamps? does it follow the same route simply needing the hanger's welded on or is there more to it? I have heard that the 300tdi exhaust (presumably minus downpipe) is a better fit but I'm a bit lost on this one so any help would be appreciated! Many Thanks, Jack
