  1. Still thinking I’ve just been reading the overhaul manual for the borg warner transfer box. I believe the manual transfer box ECU takes 4 Inputs before it powers up the motor and moves selector fork. Ratio control motor position Range selector switch Vehicle road speed Gear lever neutral I don’t see a problem with the first two inputs as they already exist in the transfer box. The vehicle road speed sensor is mounted in the transfer box. Does the input go directly to the transfer box ECU or does it first go through the BECM and then onto the ECU? In fact I may be making things more complex than they need to be. The ECU prevents low being selected if the vehicle is going faster than 15mph (I believe) If the sensor works with a reluctor ring surely it receive no input if the vehicle is stationary. Does this mean I can leave this input and just make sure I only press the high/low switch when the vehicle has stopped If I am going to use the ECU from a manual box how can I give an input to the ECU that the gear lever is in neutral? I guess there can only be two possible inputs to the transfer box with the gear lever, Neutral/In gear. What type of signal is the ECU expecting? Would it be possible to give a similar input just by a two way switch? Cheers Tom
  2. Cheers for your help The transfer box is the only component I have from a P38 range rover. I have neither the ECU for the transfer box or the DECM or any other ECU on my vehicle I have the two way p38 sliding gear selector which is what is normal used to switch from high to low although I cant see if being much use if I dont use it alongside the ECU/DECM. In fact I am thinking of changing it back to a normal ZF4HP22 single one when I know what I am doing. Obviously this is far more complex than I first thought Tom
  3. Hi guys Just wondered if anyone knows anything about the Borge Warner transfer box used in the P38? I’ve got one in my challenge truck and need to work out the best way to wire the high/low switch in. All I know is that with a P38 the Becm controls when the transfer box is ‘allowed’ to change. The actual physical change is carried out by a motor. Therefore I see it as just an electric motor. Am I being stupid Does the motor just require a two way switch and the correct power to turn and move the selector? Tom
  4. Hi I have a square ‘type’ smith’s heater which is plumed to a 200tdi engine. I am planning on moving the heater to a different place in my vehicle. This will involve separating the hoses at the back and re connecting them. Is there an issue with ‘air locks’ in the system after I connect them (being that ill probably have lost some fluid from the matrix and hoses?? One other random questions, now that’s I’ve started ... Is there a valve in the heater or does fluid permanently circulate through the system?
  5. Cheers for your help. I did think using a bicycle speedometer but the IVA don’t allow them to be used. It seems the only way to do it is to buy an electronic speedometer and run it of the props haft or something. Sadly there not cheap. The best I’ve found is one for £70, I then need to buy the sensor and magnet on top of that.
  6. Hi I’ve got a P38 transfer box in my challenge truck. I am planning on getting my vehicle through an IVA and therefore need some sort of speedo Could anyone tell me whether the speedometer on a P38 runs electronically or mechanically from the transfer box? I may be completely wrong .... Does the speedo even run of the transfer box ? Cheers Tom
  7. Finish and get it passed its IVA. Before I get my driving licence, In March ..... eek Happy New Year everyone!
  8. My mistake … The Dash in the above pictures isn’t a genuine tomcat one. It’s a custom dash fitted within a tomcat. I’ve talked to tomcat today … Sadly their dashes are made from fibreglass meaning there very hard to modify and fit into a non tomcat vehicle. As my vehicles body has also been narrowed 8” I don’t feel it’s worth the extra effort over a custom dash
  9. A bit of a browsing on Google and I’ve found a picture Thanks again
  10. Thanks for your advice… I have a lightweight series heater in the centre and can’t really relocate it to another place to make space for the dashboard…. IVA regulations also prevent a centre dash from being used. The instrument panels has to be located within a 127mm of the external diameter of the steering wheel I’ll contact Tomcat motor sport tomorrow and see if they can sort me out? Cheers Tom
  11. Hi everyone. I’ve got a bit of dashboard dilemma My vehicle has a standard defender dash and wiring loom in it. The wiring is half complete with some indicator movements lighting up the dash. I plan to get the vehicle through an IVA in a few months. After reading the regulations about forward vision I’ve found that due to the lowered roof the defender dash obstructs vision through the windscreen. As a result I am planning on getting a custom dash made. I am aware ‘gauge panels’ are on sale although I haven’t found anything suitable for my application. I’ve been doing a little research in into custom panels but so far haven’t had much success. Basically… I just wondered if anyone knows of any fabrication companies which specialise in making Dashboards???
  12. I am around and able to help out … I’ve sent you a pm
  13. The complete diff has been rotated 180 degree, to change the direction of the drive. Looking at it now …. I don’t think there’ll be any problems, but what do I know
  14. Has anyone had any experience of fitting a locker on a ‘turned’ land rover diff? I am guessing an ARB unit is more likely to fit than something like the KAM one, being that its all enclosed Cheers Tom
  15. Sounds …… Sweet!! Definitely looking forward to having a ‘crack’ at this series next year Should be able to get to the first one, May have passed my driving test by March
  16. Oh … That Haynes manual which I don’t have Thanks for your help, Time to fit my Sumo bars
  17. Hi Could anyone tell me the default length of the track rod and drag link for a discovery 1? The length from one joint to the other Cheers Tom
  18. Hi Very quick question Are there any differences between Defender and Discovery 1 Steering shocks? I am aware the shocks have different mounts (at one of the ends, were they mount to the steering bar) but I just wondered if there were any over difference apart from this Cheers Tom
  19. Ok … Thanks for you help I only just worked out that the bracket is made out of a square section cut at an angle (Proving I have no imagination) As I don’t have a steering damper I might look at QT’s 'Defender' Drag link Bracket and buy a defender Steering damper (Manly because it pivots instead having a rubber bush) http://www.qtservices.co.uk/product.asp?id=2916 Cheers for your help and for originally posting this information Tom
  20. Hi … I am aware this post was made many years ago but I am planning on doing this conversion on my vehicle and have a question I dont have the original mount on my chassis …. The one which would hold the Chassis damper bracket to the chassis (I believe it was ground away by the previous owner). This one: As a result I am looking at welding a mount onto the chassis to hold the shock. Basically I am planning on doing exactly whats shown/be done above. Did you make the complete mount by yourself or by any chance is it a land rover part … If so could you tell me the part number? Cheers Tom
  21. I'll have ago Richard Egger ..... I don't think the'll have many under 20's asking for insurance Although I don't see this being a problem . My vehicle is very suited to what they regularly insure so in that respect I can't see there being too much of a problem. I am also a member of the AWDC .... So I don't need to join a club unnecessarily... I'll give them a try tomorrow Cheers Tom
  22. Ok Cheers for your help. After making my last post I did think: 'What's the Insurance companies idea of a competition' I don't expect or need insurance companies to cover me .... When I am out playing at a site. I can see how you would describe a 'pay & play/Drive around' event as pleasure. Although I am struggling to see how I can get away with a winch challenge/safari event not being a competition. Of course I could just say I am only using the vehicle for pleasure but I can see a problem arising. If I was to be in an accident after the event I'd most likely have to tell them that I'd been competing prior to the accident . I then suspect I'd not be covered for the accident as the information I first told them would be false If anyone can tell me the right words to say It would be useful I have been selective about describing my vehicle.... I haven't actually phoned up a insurance company and said 'I have a cut and shut discovery' Currently this isn't the problem ..... I haven't yet got to the 'describing point' I've always stumbled at the' competition use', part Thanks for your help anyway I am determined to get my vehicle on the road ... I've just got a minefield of stages to pass Any further advise would be extremely grateful Tom
  23. Thanks for your help Both NFU and Adrian Flux won't insurance a vehicle which its used for competition use (In any circumstance with any age/experienced driver). Most Insurance companies also won't let under 20's be 'named drivers'
  24. Ok The fun begins As some of you may know ... I've recently brought a new vehicle. It was made by Whitbread Off road and the DVLA would describe it as a 'cut and shut' It's basically a rear engined defender which is made from two front half discovery chassis. I am aware that it needs a IVA before it can be driven on the road...... Although before I start printing of pages of regulations I first want to make sure I can insure it in my name. To add to complications I will have only just passed my driving test by the time the vehicle is on the road.... I just wondered if anyone could recommended any insurance companies which will understand what I am trying to insure. Cheers Tom
