  1. Hey Sam, nice truck with lots of potential. Looks standard i.e not lifted. Perhaps the best way is to measure it. Also read the posts in ths forum on suspension lifts etc. The lift usually starts with a kit of some sorts and ends up with an expensive conversion which includes propshaft replacement etc. Do your research properly. I have not lifted my 110, its standard but replaced shocks with OME's. This way it still fits into the garage and gives a decent ride. I have done a trade-off between suspension lift and rust. It sleeps in the garage .... As for the knock ..... you'll have to be more specific. Cheers Wikus
  2. Are any forumers planning to drive to SA to coincide with the FIFA world cup perhaps ? Wikus
  3. Martin, you can also use an ipod to store all your pics taken with a digital ..... creates plenty more space than you have available on your camera. Ideal for that overland trip you have in mind Wikus
  4. Martin, your chosen route through SA is an interesting one ..... by the looks of it you know what you want to see. Seems like a lot of km's travelling accross the country from west to east ..... not the prettiest parts of the country. Also quite a detour to get to Johannesburg on your way to Cape Town. Have you considered shipping out of Durban on your way back to the UK ? Diesel price = R11.44 at our end and increasing. Many options but depends on what you want to see. You may also not want to miss Vic Falls before you enter Botswana en route to Chobe / Okavango. Moremi is the place to stay in Botswana in the Chobe reserve. The Okavango Delta is over populated with animals .... becomes a bit of a mess. Give me a shout when in Cape Town. Same applies to Mike. We always have spare cold ones in the fridge, even accommodation if you need. Cheers Wikus
  5. A vacuum cleaner works well for dust.
  6. LGD, thanks for sharing your experiences about Craddocks. I considered using them in the past for "prepaid" online purchases but they were very slow to reply. This just confirmed my thoughts. TO: .enif tsuj daerht ruoy dootsrednu I ...... or left to right ...... I understood your thread just fine. ........ hat, coat and .... erm ... mod's handbag
  7. Well good luck with the exam groceries. Rather try the technical archive on here if you need info or ask some of the "grown ups" ...... best LR info you will find. Downloads for manuals etc are available also. Haynes will work for the Clio and some bedtime reading
  8. Welcome Tom. As you have noticed this is an excellent forum. I have a 110 CSW and before that a 90, also CSW. I found the rear seats in the 90 to be a complete waste of space, they are uncomfortable even for short distances .... space is limited in a 90 when you do overlanding and regular camping. 90's are like rock spiders when you go off road and not bad for parking either. The 110 CSW has a rear bench seat that folds away if needed, similar to a double cab setup. The seats in the load space are also a waste ...... mine came out after the first week of owning it. They can be re-installed with a bit of effort ..... nothing serious. When the rear seats are removed and the bench seat folded away or removed you will have ample space at the back. If space is not what you need now ..... you probably will later. As for engines ..... if you do not fear electronics, a well looked after TD5 has plenty power. Good luck with your choices and let us know what you end up buying. Wikus
  9. Hi W, Not sure what the locking mechanism on yours looks like. Suggest you have a look at the manual or else open the passenger side up to see how it fits together. In the meantime you can use the back door for access or the drivers side window ...... should be more interesting .... Cheers Wikus
  10. ah ..... thankfully politics, religion and (broader) economics may not be discussed in this forum
  11. Apologies if my posts on this subject came across as politically motivated or too broad on the economics side. It was certainly not the intention ...... personally I hate politics. I also have no objection if any of my posts are deleted if they offended or annoyed anyone. Cheers Wikus
  12. something else of interest in the diesel / kerosene arena ...... refineries do often mix dpk into diesel to increase the diesel pool if the economics justify it at that particular point in time. This also depends on the Jet fuel + diesel demand vs production and supply. If it is already mixed to an acceptable level when you buy the diesel it cannot be good for your engine to distort this mix beyond the standards. Again supply and demand determines the price. Now I don't have to bore you with the details any further
  13. Jet A1 is made from DPK (dual pupose kerosene) as is IK Iilluminating kerosene or paraffin as we know it. The processes to arrive at Jet fuel is very similar to paraffin but are more stringent in quality and specific additives. Jet fuel is therefore a top grade kerosene that can be used at very high altitudes and very low temp without waxing. Paraffin or Jet A1 can be used quite successfully at even a 50/50 mix in diesel engines. The authorities do not like this and in many countries it is illegal. In SA there is a tracer dye mixed into krosene to identify spiked diesel. I would presume the same applies in the UK. Again kerosene is not purpose made to run in diesel engines and will have longer term effects on injectors and seals. The densities and flash points differ between kerosene and diesel where kerosene has a lower density and flash point is lower ...... i.e. ignition qualities are different. Avgas is a high octane (102) fuel with very tight quality standards ....... if price is the problem with diesel ...... neither Avgas or Jet A1 is the solution. Avgas will certainly not be kind to a diesel engine.
  14. Interesting to note that pre tax diesel in the UK is the cheapest in the EU. 12,5% more expensive after tax than across the channel. In the US vehicle hi-jacking is on the increase, especially trucks ..... latest one was found 3 days later with an empty fuel tank. Cars in shopping mall parking lots are also being targeted with owners coming back to an empty fuel tank. Wolrd economies are shifting from the west to the east / mid east as more money moves to crude oil suppliers ...... not refiners or petroleum marketers where the margins are being squeezed. The US is the largest importer of crude oil in the world. With the increasingly high crude prices goverments have to increase taxes to keep their balance of payments floating. I see not much use coming from boycotting governments or petroleum companies. The world is being held to ransom by those that dominate the crude prices. Price = a factor of supply and demand. Demand increases and supply is hampered by issues like gulf wars, economies under pressure (devaluation of the dollar etc). Comes back to the mid east not being happy with the west and the world pays the price. There is no economically viable replacement for crude oil on a large scale yet. Mixing veg oil with diesel is like putting a small plaster on a leaking dam wall. Veg oil mixes or clean veg oil will run your vehicle but will ultimately clog up your engine as it contains no additives to control fuel injector deposits and nozzle fouling. Fuel atomization is also impaired. All this leads to higher repair bills ultimately. In a few decades we will not have people playing silly games with prices ...... we will not have enough fossil fuels. Same applies to coal fired power stations. As long as we take more out of the earth than what can be replaced or recreated we will head for problems. Money in the future goes to those who can find alternative sources of sustainable energy. In the mid east mega money is spent on building of cities with tourist attractions and islands etc. Wonder how much is spent on finding other sources of energy around the globe.
  15. Mark, I presume reference is made to Hard Top gutter. Cheers Wikus
  16. Try this thread Steve http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopi...mp;hl=rear+door Cheers Wikus
  17. I tried the front vents and window theory on our last trip up the coast to the diamond fields. That myth is busted beyond doubt. I don't mind getting a bit of dust inside ...... this time it was lots of dust ....... it looked like a scene from an Indiana Jones movie ...... I only managed to recognise my daugther by the white of her eyeballs ...... On second thoughts ...... perhaps the lock worked itself loose and prevented the door from closing properly. Not a particularly efficient lock on the rear door I may add. Never liked those canopy type deflectors ..... they seem to fall in the same category as blue LED lights under the rocksliders ..... practical though
  18. There seem to be a lot people with overlanding experience that visit this forum. What do you do to keep dust outside your 110 or 90 ? I have already changed the standard spare wheel carrier to the swing arm type to take weight off the back door. Wikus
  19. Paying good moolah for bad experiences ....... same in this part of the world. I have great respect for people with technical skills and thankful to those that share their knowledge so unselfishly. A great forum. Wikus
  20. Whaaaahaha .... yours leak oil ? tsk tsk ....... typical example of theory vs practise. Damn good to laugh though. Cheers Wikus
  21. Looking at this prevcious thread ........ I see Texaco MTF94 is recommended by LR for the R380 gearbox, it is marketed by Chevron in SA also as MTF94. It's a 75W/80. There is an equivalent in Mobilube XH1 also a 75W/80, seems to be a bit scarce though. Engine oils, I found an interesting opinion today ..... I have been using a mineral based oil in my TD5 mainly due to the stealer having started it it on mineral oil since I bought it. I wanted to change to a full synthetic after I have taken over the servicing myself. The recommendation by our technical advisor was against using a synthetic after a mineral oil was already used. He reckons a mineral oil has a tendency to swell the oil seals slightly over time. A synthetic does the opposite, shrinks the seals which could lead to a bit of smoking / leaking. After an overhaul or from new it would be fine to use a full synthetic as an engine oil in the TD5. Thought i'd share this opinion and see if anyone has anything to the wiser. Cheers Wikus
  22. Completely acceptable and much appreciated ..... thanks
  23. Just picking up from this thread .......... 2 questions if you would tolerate please a) To confirm as per the diagram ...... the relay pin 86 connects to earth ? B) Would it be a sin to run a wire from the starter +ve to pin 30 on the relay ? (15 A fused)
  24. Wifey comes from a really great family where you get someone to do repairs. In the beginning I was asked "why do you insist on doing things yourself" ...... answer was "cos I can" ...... got a remark back, "..... whatever blows your skirt up". She enjoys the landy and don't mind the tinkering as long as I spend some time with her too.
  25. I second Jim's diagnosis and cure. Potentiometer....
