  1. Evening,

Just wondering if someone could shed some light on this for me.

I've got an LT77 out of a v8 disco / rangey, but it's too long for my current build :( Is it possible to get an r380 bellhousing and swap for a shorter input shaft (i'll use a conversion plate on my v8 engine) ?

The easier option would be to get an R380, but battling to do so that is close enough / not silly money !

    Thanks

    Gordon

Edit : on searching the internet, i'm a little confused. Do the r380 and lt77 use the same bellhousing ? and so meaning, i need a stubby one.

  2. Diesel Jim - your way is 100% bang on :) One slight adjustment that i've done to that system, is have a switch so that i can turn that charging system (either alt) off if the need ever arose.

I've not done it on a landrover, but done it on many other vehicles for a different application.

Here is a pair of variably regulated 200A HO alts. I still have all the parts for this setup, alloying me to choose my charge voltage from 13v up to about using a pot (i was running a 16v setup of 24bat's). These 2 alts charged 1 battery system, and then i had another small alternator just to charge a single 12v battery which ran the vehicles electrics.

I have a supplier in the states who supplies these alts and variable regulators, as well as a mate in Derbyshire who customises regulators to similar variable units :) Unfortunately this gear isn't cheap :( the charging system was probably ~ £1k.

  3. Right got back off me holiday today, I dont know why I bother as you feel knackered when you come back and theres loads to catch up on, The gaffa wanted to go camping <_< Still land rover magazines kept me occupied while the regulars polished there caravans and read readers digest. ;)

Anyways back to the defender, First question is the wires out the dash have been cut so many times in the past that Im going to have to run new wires to fit a stereo, Is it just a case of a lead from the battery to the stereo and a lead from somewhere on the ignition and an earth lead??

Secondly im changing the flange on the transfer box end tomorrow to adapt a disco 2 dc prop (temporary measure as the prop was peanuts) to my tdi, Is there a gasket that will need replacing when I remove the flange like on the diff where the front seal can leak etc

    Cheers fellas

    Tris

As stated above run 3 new wires, use the following colours to keep it 'standard' to make life easier in the future :)

Permanent live (remeber to put a fuse) - yellow

    Ignition live - red

    Earth - black

Get a male iso block from a car accessory shop, and solder it onto the end, after that it's plug and play with whatever stereo you want :)

I can't remember the speaker wire colours (i.e. which wires relate to which speaker), but again you'll be able to find it on the internet / haynes and join these to another iso block.

This is an iso plug :

(The bottom part of the plug in the picture is the power cable section, the top part is for the speakers)

  4. Hello,

I've spent hours searching through this forum and other sites for people who've done this, and think i know roughly what's needed.

This one in particular being a great help - http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopi...hl=hydro+assist

But what i haven't read about is how it actually works.

Maybe because i don't know exactly how a power steering box works ? My little brain understands it as follows :

Your steering column is effectively connected to your drag link arm via a torsion bar.

As you turn your steering, the torque twists the torsion bar, and in doing so opens valves to allow fluid to pass / flow / push thus making your steering easier.

Now maybe i'm totally wrong with this explanation, so feel free to laugh at me :P:o

What i was wondering about was, how do you make sure on a hydro assist system the correct amount of fluid fills the ram to match the steering box. Say for instance you were turning right, if your steering box arm was all the way to the right how is it ensured that the ram has enough fluid in it to extend the correct distance.

i.e. too much extension, and something will break.

I hope the above makes sense ?

this is the sort of application i'm referring to (pic from other thread)

  5. Hi !

Just wondering if anyone has hired a landrover in botswana before ?

I wish to take my english girlfriend out there for new year, but i can't borrow any vehicles so thought possibly hiring one. I can't source one in RSA, because i'd need to faff around getting a visa.

I have a zimbabwean & uk driving license.

    Thanks

    Gordon

  6. The gearbox (LT77 / R380) and transfer boxes are on banjo bolts, but just out of interest what thread are they as well ?

And finally what is the normal size to drill and tap the Warn 8274's to install a breather on them ?

    Thanks

    Gordon

as far as i know the axels are 1/8bsp , as are the gearbox transfer are the same , and ive done my 8274 the same , all using 6mm nylon pipe , that way you allways have spare on the truck you can rob for other parts (my ARB,s are the same)

    thanks.

so axels, gearbox & tfr box are all 1/8 bsp

    what about the engine ?

i'm running a v8 and can only find 1 breather on that just above the fly wheel, but need to get some goodies for a diesel truck as well :)

  7. Hello,

Ok... i've been reading the forum for ages, but never posted !

I'm about to get some fittings to make up some breathers, but am not 100% sure on what threads they are ?

    Can someone confirm :

    Defender Axel (1/4 bsp ?)

200 tdi Crank & Bell housing

The gearbox (LT77 / R380) and transfer boxes are on banjo bolts, but just out of interest what thread are they as well ?

And finally what is the normal size to drill and tap the Warn 8274's to install a breather on them ?

    Thanks

    Gordon

  8. Can you splice ? If so, this is possible (although a pain) if you are using thin steel cable. There is another way that we kindof undo the cable a bit, and resplice a loop - sorry difficult to explain.

Stick a pair of bulldog clips on just to be sure :)

This is a bulldog, when fitting, "never saddle a dead horse" :

If you're using it for a purpose that will have some strain on it, then get it done properly. I know at work, we just order in various size slings (from 3mm right up to 75mm in diameter)
