daveturnbull
I'm looking for the right part number for a Defender 110 rear axle stub axle inner oil seal. It's 2002 with the Rover type axle. My usual parts sites have a few different ones and seem quite vague.
western
2002 rear hub seal should be FTC4785 same for 2007 onwards too.
Ex Member
RTC3511 is a better designed seal and always preferred to the newer style FTC4785.
daveturnbull
Thank you both.
Retroanaconda
Those numbers are hub seals, you’re asking about the stub axle internal seal though? Think you want FTC5268, item 3 below.
daveturnbull
I think you might be right there James. It is the little one that goes inside the stub axle to stop the EP90 creeping into the wheel bearings that I need. Linky It certainly seems to be about the right size, where as FTC4785 looks a lot bigger.
western
OOPS, Should have read it slower, its what James says, other is for the hub bearings, there's no problem leaving the stub seal out, better for hub bearings to have a oil bath, mine have been fine
Ex Member
Keep in mind, the picture above is not quite correct. There is a needle bearing behind the seal (FTC861). It needs to be removed to get the seal changed and is not simple to remove without damage. If you really feel the need to change that seal, get a set of the bearings at the same time. Best to read the workshop manual and get yourself a copy of the parts catalog. As Western states, oil in the bearings is a good idea.
