Pete Attryde
Hello all, Being bored yesterday I took a hacksaw to the CAT that I removed from my 300TDi at the weekend. I was suprised as to how clear the mesh looks as IFAIK it's the original for the vehicle and has done about 130,000 miles. The mesh has a quite tight weave and there seem to be several layers in the can so I can see that it will cause some restriction to exhaust gas flow even if it was completely clean. not the best quality pictures but the camera was struggling to decide what to focus on. not all that interesting I guess. Pete.
Les Henson
The mesh is coated in platinum, which nowadays can be recycled. I replaced a faulty cat and lambda sensor on a Corsa last week, and there is a £30 deposit returned on the old cat. Les.
BogMonster
Interesting, I have never cut one up before Have been meaning to de-cat my V8 for four years but never got around to it....
Lewis
Everytime I have cut one up I have found charcoal - it looks like someone has emptied the remains of a barbeque into the cat - I never noticed the mesh before I have heard stories of upto £100 being paid out by scrap-yards for old cats Lewis
sgnas
I have heard stories of upto £100 being paid out by scrap-yards for old catsLewis That would be the sort of scrapyard you can get a "new" cat for £150 from then!
Cartman
Everytime I have cut one up I have found charcoal - it looks like someone has emptied the remains of a barbeque into the cat - I never noticed the mesh before Some early vehicles say prior to 1990 that had Cats fitted (US cars mainly) used a bead based fill which is probably what you have seen. Cheers, Paul
